It's a bit twisted but our own chickens are fed the shells of the eggs that they laid...

YOU MONSTER!!! lol

I've been thinking about getting chickens for a while. Just not sure how they'd get on with the dog... Dog likes chicken.

If I remember right you have a big German Shepherd? We have a half GS half standard poodle mix and he is definitely interested in the coop. The coop is outside of his fenced piece of the yard so there is separation but if I walk him outside near it he wants to investigate...and likely eat the birds.

That said, definitely get chickens. Definitely get an automatic door for your coop and a heater for your water source.

If you're handy, I have plans for a nice coop that you can build.

Soylent Green.

Hey David - be careful of those foxes, though. When I was in Ireland for many months working and staying at a very nice inn on a large estate with my wife and then 3-year old son, they had a nice chicken coop with maybe a dozen chickens, so we got very fresh eggs and chicken dishes. Our son loved looking at and making noises at the chickens. Then one morning all but a couple of the chickens were gone, due to some smart foxes and our son was very sad.

Then a year later or so, back in Metuchen, he and my wife were walking down Main St. and there's a taxidermist shop there and you can see a bunch of the stuffed animals from outside the shop. My wife had a pretty clever answer for my son's questions on why weren't the animals moving - she said it was the "Stand Still Zoo" and he bought it. We still crack up at that 20 years later.

I have foxes, coyotes, owls, hawks, eagles and a bunch of other predators around. I watched a red tail hawk attack my coop a few months ago - exciting but no harm to the birds. Thus far the foxes and other ground based hunters have steered clear of the coop. My big dog tried to get a fox the other night but the fox had too much of a head start. I'll be sad if something gets them but I've managed to convince myself that the birds are workers, not pets.
