Will a welding helmet or goggles be safe to look at the eclipse? I have never tried my auto darkening welding helmet in the sun, don't know if it will darken in sunlight?

a regular welding helmet or goggles is perfectly fine. Now I don't know about the self darkening ones. I don't know if it will darken right for the sun.

I say a welding helmet or goggles are fine assuming they are at least #12. If you want to sit and watch it completely then maybe it should be #13 or 14.

A #14 welders glass should be safe to view the eclipse. Don't think I'd try auto-darkening though because your eyes may be fried before they fully darken. You can get eclipse glasses on the Internet cheaply. Here's a link with some info.

Seems kind of uneventful to me. Google "solar eclipse images" and get the same thing or better than what you'll see in a welding helmet

What they said.

I am sure the sports message board knows best. It is just your eyesight. Besides there are no other internet resources available to help you safely view the greatest celestial event of your lifetime. Just sayin.

It will be basically a non event unless you are in the path of totality. A solar eclipse in the path of totality is like asking someone how an Insane Clown Possie concert was. They can explain it to you.. but you will never know what it was really like.

Yeah. And no need to go see the Grand Canyon or Machu Picchu either. Just Google the images.

This. The only partial eclipse I've seen was pretty non-dramatic. I would like to see a total eclipse though.

The one in '84 was damn eerie. Everything got dead quiet during it. No birds, nothing.

I'd be looking for a pair of glasses equivalent to the set that the black bear administration has been using to look into the allegations posed by the NCAA, cause those MFers can't see ****.

I can get a good look at a T-bone steak by sticking my head up a bull's ***, but I'd rather take the butcher's word for it.

Here in Columbia, SC we're supposed to be one of the best places in the US to view. THey're are hyping the **** out this thing and are expecting over 600,000 people to descend on Columbia, SC.
It gone be cray cray up in dis mofo!

My daughter has a soccer tourney in Ashville and we'll be driving back to Columbia Sunday evening and they're telling me I may have an issue getting home due to extremely heavy traffic traveling into Columbia. I remember in 1984, 4th grade Brandon Elementary School, we made **** all week to view the eclipse which happened as we got out of school. I remember walking out of school and looking up and thinking, what a 17ing let down.

There's an easy test. Put the helmet or goggles on outside and look directly at the sun. If it's too much and you can't look for more than like a second, they won't work for the eclipse.

Unless you go to the narrow band of 100%, you're going to be underwhelmed. Even at 90% it's going to be just slightly darker than a regular sunny day.

You can get free eclipse viewing glasses at many local libraries. And you can order them from Amazon (10 pairs about $10).

I saw them at Lowes this weekend. Guess the framers and roofers aren't getting eclipse day off.

Viewing the Solar Eclipse outside of the path of Totality is literally the difference between Night and Day!
