From the “I am fat” thread. Looking for info on HIIT; experience, successes, types of workouts, what not to do, etc. I watched the video that was linked and found it fascinating. I have run on and off for 40 years. Have done a marathon, several half marathons, but last couple of years have not been doing much. Close to my all time high in weight (6 ft., 220), and ready to make some changes.

I do. Assuming I am eating right, at age 50 I need to HIIT it about 4 times a week. I have been at it for about 5 years now and the before/after still surprises people. The wife and her friends do Orange Theory 3 times a week (it is pretty intense for an hour) and they have seen amazing results for 2 years now.

All that being said, eating right is what will cause the body fat to drop. Less beer, (more red wine) less bad carbs etc. At least that is what worked for me...

Agreed. I'd say diet 60%, workout 25%, sleep 15%. The sleep aspect is greatly overlooked when it's a huge factor.

Two things I'd hugely recommend to anyone just getting started in trying to lose weight is to get a dedicated fitness tracker with heart rate monitoring. One that lasts a couple of days on a charge and wear it all day/night every day except when it has to be recharged. It'll establish your base line 24 hour calorie burn. In my experience, this was great on a fitbitHR and virtually useless on an apple watch. Then go with myfitnesspal on your meals and monitor everything. It's a pretty simple math equation toward losing weight when you have those two factors. And it will provide you with a lot of good information you otherwise wouldn't necessarily know about your diet. ex: Even when as clean as i could be, I wasn't getting enough fiber in my diet, and my sodium intake was totally through the roof. I corrected the fiber easily, but sodium is another conversation altogether I never did get down to recommended levels.

I've tried out a bunch of bad habits in my life -- and will avoid them cold turkey every so often just to prove to myself that I can -- and food is by far the hardest one I've had to break. People probably don't even realize the addiction factor there until they try to go totally clean for a little while.

I was told early on by a doctor that no one should run after the age of 35 if they want to be able to walk and not have knee and joint problems. He said after 35 go to a bike. It made sense to me, so I abided by it.

Well into my 5th decade and running constantly. Double digit marathons, 2 50Ks, countless halfs. Zero issues. Some drs are full of ****.

While some have better joints than others, cycling is incredible at providing a low impact exercise with high results.
Road cycling, single track MTB, cyclocross, adventure gravel riding- there are so many varieties too that keep riding from becoming redundant. Plot out a new course and try it. Adventure + exercise = never ending benefits

if you are healthy running isn't going to be that bad for you. Weighing 300lbs and being fat it probably is bad on your knees. I have gained some weight recently and i tried to start back running. it was hurting my knees. Instead of fighting through it like i usually do when i gain weight i decided to buy a rowing machine. after I lose 5-10 pounds when i start running again my knees will not hurt. its basic physics. There is also the option to run on grass. That limits the impact as do stabilizers. Your doctor is FOS. there isn't a one size fits all. it isn't the best on your joints but sitting on your *** isn't any better. also buy a decent pair of running shoes from a store that specializes in running shoes. they have good advice.

I've done insanity and T25 off and on. Insanity works better but T25 is half the time. Trying to get back in shape now...I do T25 once or twice a week now mixed in with weights twice and tennis/running/cardio a couple times.

My problem is the diet part.

Just be sure to pin identifying information and "in case my *** is run the hell over" information card to your would-be carcass to assist first responders.

Speaking of Cycling

Anyone ponied up and bought a Peloton yet? Had mine about 3 months now, that thing is a dream.

front end expensive, yeah...but after that its fine. Its fun to get on and take a class. If you have friends that own one too your competitive side comes out.

With any interval training, one should obtain a solid foundation/base prior. Risk of injury is high when the body is not prepared.

Periodization is the safest/most effective way to train. There are no short cuts.

Good luck.

You guys are inspiring me. After surgery this past year, I had to quit running for a stretch. I failed to stop my sweettooth and jeez... have added about 20lbs on top of the 10 the prior year.

Looking to drop some serious weight and need some changes. At 53, the pounds don't fall whenever I make an effort like the old days.

so HIIT is the recommendation of choice?

Road ID is for that purpose. My wife and I always celebrate post-bike rides that we didn't die.
A friend of mine almost did die on Nissan Parkway about 3 years ago. I've ridden my bike once since her accident. It's just too dangerous with all this texting and driving going on.

Strong advice here. Follow it closely. I'm bad to go harder earlier than I'm ready for. In the past, after a strong leg day in the early weeks of getting back going, I literally paralyzed my quads for 36ish hours. Like couldn't lift my leg out in front of me sitting on the couch, full single muscle group paralysis. The people out front of Mcalister's that saw me step off the curb and go down then damn near be unable to get back up after that workout probably still tell the story...

Bengreenfield fitness - the dude changed my life via keto, HIIT, supplements, sleep, nutrition, and great podcasts

*convinced me to switch to the tushy instead of TP. Would never go back and hate it when I'm away from home

Been hiiting it for 2 decades now! Use to be about 5 times a week but it's down to about 2 now.
Sometimes she'll let me hiit it more frequently but not to often.

As far as excercise goes, crossfit for me and the wife.

Who thought it was a good idea to take paper and smear Hugh freeze all over your ***? The Japanese know what they're doing and now so do I but only cost me 69$!
What didn’t you spring for the spa bro? Only $20 more. What do you dry with?

and seriously, did you buy one of the dudes programs? Personal coach? I ask cause I’m interested.

I have lost 110 lbs in a little under 2 yrs. At 39 I had high blood pressure and was basically a pile of crap. Crossfit and eating right. I worked with a trainer for about 2 months on my food. Eating is by far the toughest part.

No, i just listen to and follow greenfield's podcast. I've probably spent more on the bulletproof MCT oil and protein bars. These guys have hacked the secret to healthy living:
-intermittent fasting / 18 hrs per day
-coffee for breakfast
-cold showers
-supplements
-sleep
-HIIT
-strength training
-low carbs/sugars
-protein / fat / keto diet
-saunas
-grass feed foods
-and my favorite - the low price / easy retrofit bidet

Just Googled it. I think I'll stick with the baby wipes. I like to be clean down there, but I don't think I want to take a shower down there every time I poop.
