I kinda feel like a recruit lol but I need some help for those that may know of these two companies. I was offered by both and both offers are pretty much apples to apples. Both offer flexible work schedules in the event of now, etc. Both are management positions. One is 40 miles away and the other is 60 which hurts. One is a healthcare company and the other retail. They are Qualcare and Toys R Us. I know that Qualcare is/was acquired by Cigna and that is also a concern. Any advise is appreciated. The one perk of toys is that they agreed that I can start at 7:30 and leave by 4 to avoid most of the worst traffic. Thanks all!

Well this question seems obvious, but what do you have interest in? They are pretty different industries. Which one do you see a future in that you will enjoy the most?
Interview process is an odd one. Everyone puts on their best face. Qualcare seemed more chaotic but also more of an opportunity to put my stamp on the department. Toys seemed more 'Big' and bureaucratic but the guy I would report to seemed cool and easy going. Frustrating.

Have you looked at their financial position? And how they compare against Wal-Mart, Target and Amazon? They had a $1B loss in FY 2013. The bulk of their debt is considered distressed. Their debt levels are 3x industry norms.

I was just going to post the same. toysrus has high turnover for this reason, which is why they are always looking for people. Avoid them like the plague.

Better than even money odds that Toys R Us is bankrupt inside 18 months and you're worried about a few points of 401k match?
Toys r us is in severe financial distress. Just look where there CDS trades. As a result toys might have. A harder time paying bonuses, higher wage increases ect... down the line. Is there a way to get your bonus guaranteed?
Either way you should becareful if your looking for a long time stay at one place.
Decision is ultimately yours. Who knows maybe toys turns it around.

Any position that is bonus eligible at Toys, if there even are any outside of the C suite even left, isn't agreeing to let someone leave at 4 pm.
Yes that is understood. But as along as the OP is aware of the financial condition of Toy and the likelihood it could default and the ramifications (job loss ect...) should things not improve there is still potential for opportunity for him there. Managers above him will be leaving and if you stick it out you never know where you end up.

Aside from the financials of Toys - my friend was in upper management there several years ago and said he was treated very well.

We were early investors in Q-care and are cashing out with the Cigna transaction closing.
You didn't say what your skill/role would be at each company, but maybe take the
position that came with the longer contract? If you don't have at least a 2 year guarantee in this
economy, stay where you are, and keep looking for a better position until April when the
job market will fall apart again. You could also tell both that you accept, but can't start until
May 1 because of a project you want to see completed at your current position
If you've been out of work, and need to take one of these 2, go Q-care, because your networking
opportunities are much greater.

Honest advice. Before accepting a job at toy def speak to the manager about your concerns with the distressed financial state of the company and how your worried about your future there should things not improve. Be honest and polite but seek answers. Trust me, any hiring manager at that company is expecting those questions. Maybe he can share more light on how your position or group could be affected down the line. If his answers aren't up to par or satisfying to you then your decision is made for you.
Thanks everyone. I appreciate the help and feedback. I am 45 with a wife and 3 small kids. I know nothing is guaranteed. Toys can have a massive layoff in a year but with Qualcare Cigna can step in at any point and start changing things as well. I guess again it comes down to just under 40 miles vs just over 60. Unless I was a cop or a teacher with tenure there is no such thing as job security.
I was with Toys"R"Us for 12 years but it has been a while since I was there (left 8 years ago). At the time they had just gone private and were losing market share to Wal-Mart, etc. as others have said. I can only imagine it has gotten worse since then. I was in the marketing area and I can say they were a bit behind the times back then. They were very traditional in their approach (key focuses were year over year sales, same store sales, etc.). CRM was a new area back then and was a tough sell internally. Although in fairness I had heard from some friends a few years back that they had brought some new people in and were becoming a bit more analytical. Bonuses were hard to come by back then (again that
could have changed). I only remember one year towards the end of my tenure where I got a meaningful bonus.
While what people have said about TRU losing market share are likely true, I would be curious what area of the company you would be working for. Babies"R"Us was strong back then and likely may still be. Those folks were a bit more progressive, but not by a lot. They still had a bit of a seasonal retail mentality in a business that was obviously not seasonal. I remember that we would put out these big, beautiful (but expensive) catalogs in the Spring and Fall like a traditional retailer. Bur people don't tend to have babies just in the Spring or Fall.
So as others have said, ask more questions. No one worth their salt should give you a hard time for doing so (it will show that you are taking the decision seriously). Good luck to you.

Bro, whatever you do, don't post the company names on message boards. Every big company does background checks with outside security firms these days including full internet searches. Do your own research and don't be naive about company distress or your own social media. You'd be shocked by some of the things my HR dept finds on candidates.

You are right. No such thing as job security. Companies appear to be letting people go earlier and earlier in their career. Before they allowed them to stay till 60 and then 50's and now moving down to mid -40's.

HR departments can do social media - there's even software that will apply facial recognition to social media which will identify people that are not even tagged. I'm not sure if security firms can trace to email addresses or the extent, but it is shocking some of the stuff we've gotten back from security firms, including high school discipline, traffic stops, etc.
Any sense on how the Cigna business fares when the company gets acquired by Anthem? I'd certainly ask that question.

The last corporate background check I went through pulled up my membership to a different MB where I used my name but not this one..,they also went through Facebook and LinkedIn thoroughly
He'll be pulling the trigger any month now...lol
Background checks are very industry dependent. Toys R Us is basically sending someone into the post office to see if your picture is on a Wanted poster...if not, you're set. If so, I wouldn't give up, they still may call.
