Good, I’m not from that area of the state to know the characters but have followed for several years, if you can’t a conviction to stick after 6 tries then obviously you don’t have the evidence to convey “without a reasonable doubt” and that’s not how things work in this country. I feel for the family of the deceased but that’s why it’s so critical that competent prosecutors be selected.

Pure incompetence by an overconfident narcissistic prosecutor and a town too willing to accept his decision to prosecute.

His documented violations by numerous courts to include the Supreme Court should cause him to have to give up his freedom for a period of time.

There was nothing reasonable about this travesty of justice.

I love how everybody bases their opinion on "Into the Dark" which was created to be controversial....Now everybody is lawyer. 98% of the liberal posters on this board can be swayed into anything based on one side of the story.
Evans side of the story was heard by...what was it 6? different juries and a guilty sentence was handed down each time.
I was on a Grand Jury one time. It was so eye opening. Seeing how other juror's would question every single thing the cops would say when giving the facts about why they searched a car....I wish I could talk in detail about it but bottom line is some people HATE the law and think corruption is ok.
Hammer away....I'll read

So you are discounting the racism that led to the need for 6 trials, or you think that the DA is only racist in his jury selection but theN pursues it on the up and up. Forget about the way that the information was presented in the podcast, the information itself suggest the worst of small town MS justice and a need to lock someone up quickly for murder crimes and then make it stick no matter what. Curtis has been abused by the system from the start. I’m doubtful he did it but his justice system experience is a travesty regardless.

I have served on several grand juries. You do know that is your job to question everything because you are only hearing one side of the story and there is no defense presented? And while I don't have a vitriolic hatred of police and prosecutors, I do have a very low opinion of them as I see them as lazy..they take shortcuts and bring their personal biases into their decisions just as we all do, however, their jobs involve taking away freedoms of citizens ....call me crazy but I'd much rather 100 guilty people go free than to have ONE innocent person be convicted.

Prosecutors and police manipulate evidence to fit their narrative which is exactly what happened in the Duke Lacrosse team...unfortunately, my experience has been that situations like that are the rule rather the exception.

Typical liberal news media spinning things to make Flowers a victim. Sad that people believe it and then become experts. If you lived here, were there when it went down, and had a brain, you’d know the true story. Trials were overturned due to the inability to get a fair, racially proper jury, nothing more. It’s hard to find enough black jurors in a small town/county that weren’t related, didn’t have prejudice opinions, or had no knowledge of the crime. A black man was one of the four murdered in this senseless crime. His family has suffered just as much as the three white families. The only discrimination in this trial was by actual juniors lying about being a relative, stating he was innocent because he was black, or lying about prejudice in order to serve. This lead to prosecutors having to take the best jury available. The evidence was there yet very little allowed to be presented due to “legal” problems. Sad day for the victims families that have lived with this horrific murder for over twenty years. I hope he enjoys time with his family and dodging a life or death sentence. I pray that none of the victims family members, who have seen the evidence and know the truth, do anything to cause further pain to their families. God will be the ultimate judge of this mans soul.

I haven't seen the podcast, but I will say this. No one, deserves to be on trial for the same crime 6 damn times. You either have the evidence and correct procedure to get a conviction or you have to let this dude go, regardless of how much the public and victims family want it to be true.

Seems like with 4 convictions and 2 mistrials this guy probably done it. but having a 7th trial seems a bit un-American, but I understand that another trial would be prudent because 4 were overturned and the other 2 were mistrials.

If they were to have another trial, I would probably do a double blind jury selection process (if legal), chosen completely by computers to mix race, social status, kids/no kids, etc of a randomly generated jury pool. That is how they should chose juries anyway. Lawyers shouldn't have any say in the jury selection process. Computers should decide from a cross section of potential jurors.

I love how you are stereotyping All Police and Prosecutors. So you seriously don't trust the people that paid to protect us. Who you calling if something is stolen from your house? No doubt, there have been and will be a rogue cop here and there but I trust 95% of the one I know both black and white.

You may sincerely not have been exposed to the amount of racism that still exists in many places, and permeates some police departments, and that if OK because it forms your perspective. However, once you've seen and been forced to understand that some people are still capable of doing the unbelievable, then it absolutely leaves you with a distrust of police and prosecutors by default unless you know them personally.

Damn those pesky “legal” problems getting in the way is putting a man to death. Was it “legal” problems that kept them from ever finding a murder weapon? Or having multiple snitches, a few of them jailhouse, change their story and then later recant those statements?

Then why wasn’t the trial moved to an alternate location elsewhere in the state where a more impartial jury that was also racially balanced could be constructed? Because the DA was blindly incompetent at best, and overtly racist at worst, that’s why. He had his convictions overturned due to depriving the defendant of constitutional rights, and he turned around and did the same **** over and over again. In either case, a fair trial was not ever granted.

Also, saying the case was overturned on a “racially improper jury...nothing more” is a massive red herring. All of the evidence was purely circumstantial, seeing as how they never even recovered the murder weapon or recovered his DNA, fingerprints, etc. at the crime scene. There is no way to know how a “proper jury” would have viewed the case, which is the whole point.

I don't remember all the details, just that it happened. I don't know the facts, whether he is guilty or not.

But, 6 times they've tried to legally prove it in a court of law and 6 times they've failed to satisfy the system. Because they haven't been able to satisfactorily prove it, this guy has spent 23 years of his life in jail for a crime that hasn't been proven in a legal way. Easy for me to say w/ no direct family involvement, but its time to move on and if anyone wants to be pissed, start w/ the DA's office and the voters that keep electing him. How many other crimes has this guy botched in court?

And since you typed out “liberal” as a some sort of diss that didn’t belong in this thread how about this coming from a real conservative libertarian: maybe your racist *** should move to Corinth with the rest of those confederate flag clutchers. The SO in my hometown just lost a federal lawsuit for racially biased tactics and can no longer post road blocks in black areas. During the investigation the sitting sheriff was sending emails from his professional email about white pride and why isn’t there a white history month. There is definitely nuance and I consider that sheriff dept to do a good job overall but they’re having to clean up some things (and that’s good).

Hell, the former police chief in Starkville ran around the station in a clan hood and his wife, the MSU police chief, went down for numerous covered up drunk driving incidents (allegedly). That dude was a Bonafide pos.

Mistakes were made on both sides. The first 2 trials were in Lee county and Harrison county. Both delivered guilty verdicts. Rest of trials were in Montgomery county. Trial 3 delivered a guilty verdict.

Trials 4 and 5 were hung juries. Trial 4 had 7 white jurors and 5 black and verdicts were split down racial lines. Trial 5 had 9 white and 3 black jurors. 11 votes for guilty and one for not. 1 black juror told fellow jurors that he was in alley behind Tardy Furniture before murders and didn’t see anything. He was arrested for lying about personal knowledge of the case. The whole jury was indicted for perjury then dismissed because; it was later determined that no jurors were asked about personal knowledge of the crime. It has also been discovered that Flowers had someone that was one his visitation list at the Carroll County jail that also got on the jury.

Trial 6 also delivered guilty verdicts on all four counts of murder just like trial 3 did.

I havent heard the podcast(its a podcase, i assume since everything like this seems to either be a podcast or netflix doc).
Nobody should have to go thru 7 trials for the same alleged crime. That is simply wrong. If an office cant get their **** right after 6 different trials(where they can correct their prior errors each time), they shouldnt get a 7th try.

Equally, I love how people will assume that anyone who would disagree with them could only be doing so under limited information. That those people could only be using a podcast for information. It's not possible that they are from there. Know police officers, friends of the people murdered, classmates of the accused and know the prosecutor and his personality. No sir. Just a podcast.

Save your indignation for someone else.

That isnt even close to true. People in town are split.

What's more, conservative judges like Alito and Cavenaugh looked at the trials and the Batson precedent and reversed the last conviction because it was obvious that he struck the jurors and questioned the jurors based on race. Just like the Mississippi Supreme court determined.

Guilt or innocence is not the ultimate goal of courts. It is a fair trial and justice being properly served as intended. That is what has been determined MULTIPLE times by judges of all political persuasions did not happen.

The reasonable doubt in this case is overwhelming. It is obvious that if Evans hadnt been able to violate Batson, he would have never gotten any conviction.

Look at it this way: if Schumer were allowed to select the ONLY senators allowed to vote on conviction in the impeachment trial, and he struck all republicans in the senate from being able to vote, would you consider their verdict valid?
