RU Wrestling fan, and a craft beer aficionado as well? How have I not met you in person yet?

Prairie and Perennial are incredible...I'm hoping to score Pirate Bomb during Philly Beer Week in June. We also got a large shipment of Wicked Weed recently if you are interested in sour Ales...their IPAs and Stouts are excellent as well.

Singlecut is in NJ now as well...look for Heavy Boots of Lead.
Good question.

I haven't tried Pirate Bomb yet, as it's been the hardest of the Bomb's to find/get, but hope to this year. What places are good to visit during Philly beer week? Do you know what breweries will be at the opening tap 2017?
I thought Ballast Point was expensive, then I bought a six pack of Cigar City Jai Alai cans...
Prairie Bomb retails for $10-$12 per 12 oz bottle.

Last year's PBW was a bit subdued because of the International Craft Brewers Conference that took place in Philly in May of last year which was out of this world. We had breweries like Surly from Minnesota in town, J. Wakefield from Miami, up for it, just too many to name. Because of that I bet many one off breweries didn't come out for PBW a month later. Right now CBC 2017 is going on in Washington DC.

As for places to go during PBW, Monk's is a given...Iron Abbey in the suburbs also I highly recommend as well as Capone's, who had a 7 year KBS Vertical Brunch from 2010-16.

Opening Tap tix are on sale now...Google Philly Loves Beer as it is the new Organization running Philly Beer Week as of this year.

The coolest event is the morning of Day 1 of Philly Beer Week, when the Hammer of Glory makes its Olympic-esque trek throughout Philly all day, starting at Preston and Steve's Morning Show on 93.3 WMMR and going throughout the city, eventually stopping at the Fillmore where the Opening Tap takes place, signaling the official start of Philly Beer Week...on June 1st this year.

Kind of came with the territory, living in Philly for 4 years. That said I am plugged into the distribution network, as I have explained before Cigar City is now available in NJ as well as Singlecut as of April 1st.
Love Singlecut brews. We sellout of it as fast as it comes in.

I like some of the Singlecut beers. I'd like a make a trip to their brewery, but its closer to Rikers than the subway.
Well worth the visit in a very nice section of Queens. Beautiful place. Besides their great IPAs try the 1933 Pilsner. We will be up there May 6th again this year as we do a beer tour of NYC by bike as a warmup to the Five Boro Bike Tour the next day.

Need to keep an eye out for Firestone Walker Parabola. It should be out anytime now and is extremely difficult to obtain. Itll sell out in minutes.

A bucket list beer for sure.

A couple of years ago I learned that the conventional wisdom that obtaining Westy 12 was quite difficult is not true. I ordered a dozen bottles online and received them in about 10 days. All were the most recent release date and were received in perfect condition. As I recall the total cost per bottle incldg shipping was less than $ 20 each. Sure beats taking a trip to Belgium and lining up at the brewery for an appointment.

Here is a current link to order from Belgium in a Box. I had a very good experience with them and know others that have as well. The current unit cost on their website ( w/o shipping) is 9 Euros, or about $ 9.60 each. For those that want Westy 12 it's an option for you.

As far as an Easter beer I would recommend a german beer that is finally available in PA.
Grevensteiner is a Keller beir, naturally cloudy and absolutely delicious. The wholesaler in Eastern PA is Shangy's in Emmaus.

Definitely a bock/kolsch qualifies for a Spring seasonal. I need to pay attention to the calendar as I go to Sly Fox's Goat Race in Pottstown every year and then Brauhaus Schmitz for Maifest, which falls on the same day as the Kentucky Derby.

Not to hijack, but we are overdue for a good whisky/whiskey/bourbon thread.
Nice attention to detail with the whisky/whiskey differentiation. Add Scotch and rum to the discussion as well. Hoping in a few years my knowledge in those liquors is as profound as my knowledge for beer is.

Always on the lookout for a good kolsch. Any ideas?

Gaffel Kolsch is the classic German style kolsch. As for American Kolschs, seek out Stoudt's Karnival Kolsch, Champion's Killer Kolsch as well. Ballast Point just made a kolsch as well...need to try it first to pass judgement.

Two brews by Neshaminy Creek Brewing only available at the brewery are must haves if you visit. Passive Thought Kolsch and Tammend Helles are great! A great after dinner beer available there in bottles is Raid the Eisbock. Aged over 2 years. High alcohol but incredibly smooth. Think of a DFH 120 aged and more flavorful

I believe NCBC has their 5th year anniversary party on June 10th. I think they are announcing the band and food truck lineup for it either today or tomorrow. Vault just started distro as well, signed with Gretz.

you Jersey guys live so close to great breweries in Brooklyn, Grimm and Other Half, both make fantastic IPAs....

Would love to get my hands on that for some Ohio beers.

Don't knock Ohio beers too much...Great Lakes is a mainstay and Fat Head's makes some killer IPAs. Wouldn't mind seeing us get Columbus Brewery out here, or Hoof Hearted, or Rhineguist from Cincy.

Agree that Other Half makes great brews but would not recommend visiting there. Kind of a dump and not in a nostalgic way.

Kind of surprised he didn't mention Tired Hands with me being from Philly...who to me is the most overrated brewery in Philly. Only so many variations of the Milkshake IPA they can make. Give me Forest and Main, 2SP and Neshaminy over Tired Hands.

forgot about Tired Hands, lol...I am not knocking Ohio beers at all, so many great breweries out here. Its a hot bed right now..... I go to Hoof Hearted all the time. Their IPA's are ridiculously good. Some other good ones are Platform and Brew Kettle. Not a fan of Rhinegeist. Columbus makes some good ones, Bodhi and Creeper are two of my faves. And of course Jackie O's.

Hoof Hearted you can't get it in Ohio. you have to buy a ticket on Wednesday, which sells out in 2 minutes. 400 tix. Go pick up beer on Sunday (3 4-packs). Every 2 or 3 weeks. Thats the only way you can get it. Very very limited stores get it and its very rare.

I would just really like to score some of the great stuff from Other Half and Grimm.

It's perfectly acceptable to just say "whiskey" (as the TTB does) in referring to whiskey, whisky, bourbon & Scotch.

Exactly...just need to know that Irish and Canadian whisky drops the 'e'. Japanese whiskey has been on point as well. I like Yamazaki 12...had it at Bainbridge Barrel House down by South Street.

A couple blocks from Other Half is Folksbier, which just opened a smaller tasting room & bar where they brew. A little further away is Threes Brewing (nice set up, used to do rotating restaurants, has their beer and other craft beers on tap) and Strong Rope (haven't been yet), both near the Gowanus / Park Slope border.

On your bike tour do you go to the Finback Brewery in Glendale?

Bells Two Hearted Ale is my favorite for any holiday, or any day really. Not sold in NJ though but I live in Yardley, PA and can get it on this side of the river.

This year the only brewery we will hit is Singlecut. However, if we are ahead of schedule the Folksbier stop can easily be fit in. Our schedule this year after packet pick up at Baketball City is the outdoor festival Smorgasbord near Brooklyn Brewery than Singlecut go back down to Double Windsor Prospect Park. Short ride to Bar Great Harry, one of my favorites. Back into Manhattan for Brother Jimmys Union Square and finish at Bavaria Beirhaus.

I had some Cigar City IPA for the first time the day before yesterday, on tap at Sol Restaurant on 22 near border of Hunterdon and Somerset Counties so I am not sure if it is in Branchburg or Readington Tp. Even though Sol is a Mexican restaurant, they have an excellent beer selection which rotates.

Speaking of IPA's, has anybody been to Conclave Brewery in Flemington. Excellent stuff. It is being made in a dumpy little garage but if you are anywhere near Flemington on a Friday from about 5-7 or Saturday afternoon (their only hours) you should definitely fill up a growler or 2, or a half growler because he limits the rare stuff to 1 half per customer. All IPA fans should check it out. His Mexican morning stout is not for me, but some people love that too

like I said, Conclave's IPA's are the specialty. They seem to have at least 2 variations on tap, usually 3
Definitely need to get out there for sure...but their hours completely suck. Maybe they get a bigger facility and can at least go Thursday through Sunday at some point.

Owner is talking about finding a bigger facility-He is a HS teacher IIRC and is doing this as parttime hobby. But he sells out most of what he makes so he needs to get bigger and either hire help or reconsider full time occupation

That's usually how most craft brewers end up. They do it on the side in addition to their day job, and if they kill it, they quit said day job, go full time, hire more workers, etc.

makes sense. Well Conclave seems to be on the way. You know more about beer than I do but I think you will be impressed if you go, despite the small shabby garage and limited hours

those are the breweries to hit...not the ones that have uber cool decorating with tons of money thrown at making the place look cool. Usually those have mediocre beer. And I always wonder "have these guys tried their own beer?"

Agreed. Like most businesses built to last long term, they have to be built organically. The breweries that start from humble beginnings (brewing in their parents basement or garage, a storage facility, etc), tend to produce more quality stuff.

Oh wow thanks!! I'm glad I posted that. Going out to my mom's house in Hunterdon tomorrow so will check the Wegmans there and a couple stores by her house.

Like the Florida Cracker Ale too. Thanks!

Cigar City is in NJ..I had it on tap at the Cloverleaf last week..and it is at Poor Henrys as well. Cigar City was taken over by Oskar Blues and distribution has expanded.

Probably a Kane and Lone Eagle weekend for me. Yes I know Ocean and Flemington are far apart.
See, I think of Lone Eagle as one of those "pretty" looking places that cost a lot to build but serving mediocre beer. They definitely make too many different kinds, practically every imaginable style. I only been there twice but with changing beers between those 2 visits there was over 20 different brews. I do not believe that a new start up can be good at that many beers. Try getting 2 or 3 or 4 down pat before experimenting
