Just bought a new house and the yard is overrun with crabgrass, clover, and spurge. It has some Bermuda in it, but the few "Bermuda only" areas are very sparse. I sprayed Image with some 2-4-D about a month ago and killed a lot of the clover, but didn't do much for the crabgrass. I bought some TRIMEC which has some 2-4D in it.

Have read that crabgrass will die in the fall and the best way is to hit it with pre-emerge in the early spring. Am I wasting my time trying to spray the trimec this late?

Glad you posted about this. We moved into a house in October 2019 and the seller had been out of the house since January 2019. He had someone mowing the lawn and I'm guessing only running the irrigation enough to keep the lawn alive. After several lawn treatments and lots of watering the lawn looked perfect in the spring and into the early summer, but starting in late June patches of crabgrass started coming up and in some case very large patches. I tried all kinds of things from Lowe's/Home Depot but didn't phase it. Two weeks ago I stopped at a commercial landscape supply store and they sold me quinclorac. Keep in mind, this chemical will work for Bermuda but not St. Augustine or Centipede. After spot treating two weeks ago I'm seeing large areas of the crabgrass die off but not all of it. I need to treat again and the only problem I see so far is that I have brown spots in my yard until the Bermuda fills in which may not happen till next year. I have been reading a lot about Bermuda and my understanding is that it likes sun, water and lots of fertilizer and pre-emergents.

Maybe one of these turf Mgmt guys can chime in with some better remedies. The guy that sold me the quinclorac said there is some other things out there that will manage crabgrass better but you can only get it with a commercial license.

I had a problem with crabgrass and other stuff. During the lockdown/quarantine I had so much time on my hands, I pulled them all up by the roots. I'm always doing stuff the hard way. Neighbors thought I was crazy, but my lawn looks better than theirs now.

Trimec is no help with crabgrass. MSMA is no longer labeled for residential or commercial application. Thanks to all the unlicensed applicators spraying and over applying MSMA, as a licensed applicator I can no longer use it to properly Apply to your lawn. Thanks Guys!!

How many ounces per gallon do you recommend on a “golf course”?

Any suggestions for killing Dallisgrass? Only thing I can find is Roundup but it kills everything else. Fescue lawn.

Thanks

I bought MSMA at my co-op about a month ago. Granted it was in a 2.5 Gallon container. I use a turf grass guy for my regular maintenance but I like to spot spray. Here’s the mix I use with solid effectiveness. Spray in the evenings though. Much less likely to burn when applied late in day/eve. 1 gallon = 1 oz msma, 1 oz 24d, 1/4 oz oil/surfactant (dawn can be used here but it foams obviously so squirt at the end of your fill) and 1 oz collated iron (helps reduce burning). This should hit most broad leaf and your crabgrass.
