Not to go off a tangent, but every time I think about buttermilk it reminds me of the Lewis Grizzard quote about a girl being "uglier than an empty glass of buttermilk"
Next thing we know someone will be asking if we've ever eaten a mater sandwich.
I've always thought it was interesting that my dad --- who was raised on a cotton farm in north MS in the 50s, is as genuinely southern as you can get, and has eaten everything mentioned in this thread --- swears grits are not a southern food because he'd never tried them until he was an adult. So I've always wondered if other Mississippi people his age actually ate grits growing up, and how did he miss out. Or were they more common in another area of the south?
but let's get this thing going and find out where our country boys are on this board. Fried chitlins (when cooked correctly) may be what I'd ask for if I had one last meal. Who's with me? Upvote for yay and downvote for the city slickers .
I love my southern traditions, but much like potted meat, I’m pretty sure Vienna sausages are made of lips, peckers, and ********, with an emphasis on peckers and ********.
Alright I'm 38 and my grandparents were poor sharecroppers growing up born in 1928. So I'm with you all on growing up with cornbread and milk. Takes me back to Friday nights at their house in my childhood years every time I eat it....but let's get this thing going and find out where our country boys are on this board. Fried chitlins (when cooked correctly) may be what I'd ask for if I had one last meal. Who's with me? Upvote for yay and downvote for the city slickers .

Chitlins (chitterlings) are fine, as long as you boil the **** out of them first.
hope not. hope you've removed all the **** before it hits the water.
Hard to beat some good cheese grits.
This is the answer. Buttermilk cornbread. Take one piece and crumble it up with some fresh black eyed peas. Take another piece and crumble it into a glass and pour some sweet milk over it. Add some fresh sliced tomato to the cornbread and peas, and you've got a meal.
And if you don't call it "sweet milk," you're probably a carpetbagger.
Yep, my grandfather ate it that way.
Had anyone heard the old wives' tale that you can't drink milk while eating fish? That's what the old timers used to say.
Can't do the chitlins. We used to help my grandparents kill a hog every fall and after cleaning them and smelling them boil I just can't put one in my mouth.
