The cat will be fine. They are God's undefeated population control invention. They truly slate wipe everything in their area.

My cat is currently dragging a squirrel that she killed around the backyard. It really is amazing how much a cat kills.

I still don't get who some of you think you are to tell another grown man what kind of snake they saw.

Jump on some of the snake related Facebook pages and you will quickly come to realize that nonvenomous snakes get confused for venomous snakes every single day. The most mistaken identity is rat snake/corn snake vs copperhead. The vast majority of Mississippians can not identify snakes and most of that has to do with fear more than a lack of intelligence. Fear blinds people. Keep on believing that everybody you know has a snake encyclopedia inside their heads.

What I call a chicken snake, some call a rat snake, will make you do a double-take.

After you check the markings and head closer, and know what to look for then it's fairly simple.

They are probably basing this one the fact that most people become somewhat hysterical when suddenly confronted by a snake and have been taught to watch out for poisonous snakes, so they are looking for the bad boys right off the bat.

They just don't know that you are not the typical, hysterical person, and although you might have issues, your eyesight is just fine.

Even easier way to distinguish snakes:

Is it rattling? Yes, you have a rattlesnake. No, you have a cobra.

That’s crazy to me, I would figure it would be a dark banded water snake and moccasin all day. I took herpetology at State, and I’ve found myself questioning which of those snakes I was dealing with until I got a good look at the eyes. Funny story, one night walking back from catching Redfish, I almost stepped on this guy, when you almost step on them, you don’t have time to do the rhyme in your head. View attachment 13400

Banded watersnake vs cottonmouth is tricky. Probably the trickiest is juvenile cottonmouth vs copperhead. But, the most misidentified snake I see on Facebook is a rat snake/chicken snake, or a corn snake being labeled a copperhead. Probably because rat snakes and black racers seem to be the most common snake encountered down here. I’m not saying it’s hard to tell the difference, but most people are scared of anything slithering around without legs and are too busy trying to get away from it or kill to stop and actually try to identify it.

That reminds me of my grandparents. To my grandfather, every snake was a chicken snake. According to my grandmother, every snake might as well have been an anaconda.

To grow up in a region of the country that is home to several venomous species, southerners sure are ignorant about identifying which snakes are the dangerous ones. The only snakes that can be confusing at a distance are the various water snakes and cottonmouth. The heads and eyes are very different in appearance. I learned this stuff in elementary school.

That's a pretty good sized copperhead. They tend to be short and fat, but are not as aggressive as a rattler.

Most get bit because they just happened upon the snake and startled it. There's not a lot of time for you to decide if it's poisonous or not. I believe the only venomous snakes in our part of the country are rattlesnakes, copperheads, and water moccasins. Supposedly there are some coral snakes in parts of Arkansas. That's what was taught in elementary school when I went.

We’ve got coral snakes in Mississippi.

“ It’s before my time, but I’ve been told,
You could smell the whiskey burning down Copperhead Road.”

A little bedtime lullaby. Your welcome.

We do indeed, but they are not overly common and primarily nocturnal so that makes them even rarer to see. I've only seen one in my life and it was a road kill. Just doni't confuse a coral snake for the scarlet king snake like is pictured a few posts above.
