It shows how random the process can be
Son of an ex NFL player

Lights up a future NBA star in a State championship basketball game

Stars in football for 4 years and no program identifies him as a player

Just on genetics and athletic ability you figure some programs would bring him in

Is Yakima Washington a heavily recruited area?
Does not seem to be a hotbed of talent for the NFL. Someone else noted he was the son of an NFL player. Also a grandson of an NFL player.
Other famous athletes from Yakima are Mel Stottlemyre (and his kids) and several retired NFL players.

LOL'ed at someone already patching Apple's wikipedia saying he's the son of Annie Apple and Cooper Kupp.
Apple deserves all the stuff he’s getting. He talks **** about so many players and fans. His own teammates don’t even like him I read. His mom is a head case too. She blocked Art Stapleton a Giants reporter lol

Interesting article on Deadspin about this (link below)

Quote from article

He’s from Yakima, Wash., a town way more fun to pronounce than to actually drive to. It’s more than two hours southeast of Seattle. You don’t accidentally end up in Yakima. And Kupp wasn’t undeniable enough on film to get the chartered planes from bigger schools to touch down in his part of the world.

Not compared to the western part of the state in the Seattle metro area. It’s a decent sized town but in a relatively rural area with a lot of farmland.

Hopefully he's opening up more opportunities for other White players who have been shunned from certain positions. He's clearly the best WR in the league. #Equity

Yes Cupp has an amazing story and background. However, that tweet shows Cupp is the exception that proves the rule.
Do we really want HC Schiano to start recruiting zero star/zero offer WRs and stop worrying about those pesky "stars"?
How many other zero star/zero offer WRs were postseason heros?

Alternatively, I'll play the odds and still value "stars".

We all like stars, but...

This guy would’ve been cursed out by some in this group because he had no stars… An Ash- Culo… Doesn’t deserve the time of day here.

That’s why if he has the B1G talent, you don’t turn away Jersey Talent.

This was one pair who I was glad the Giants got rid of.

Of course this was the year the Giants could’ve gotten Laremi Tunsil, AShon Robinson, Derrick Henry, Keanu Neal, Shaq Lawson, among others instead of Apple. So the Giants deserved whatever they got lol.

If people think Schiano go after players based on the star system you surely don't know anything about Schiano.

You may be right. But there are instances that he went after the Big North 4/5 star player hard who didn’t want to go to Rutgers while ignoring a 2/3 star player from a program that’s not in the Big North who wound up in the SEC.

Credit should be given to Mike Mayock for calling him “special” even after his slow 40 time, because he did excel at all the WR skills drills at the combine.

I think Washington and Washington State should be the 2 programs really taking a hard look at why they missed him.

If he was a Jersey kid that had the same background and went to Monmouth I would want Rutgers to analyze why they missed

Jerry Rice supposedly ran a 4.6 40 too, but did anyone ever see him get caught from behind?

It happens all the time. Victor Cruz went to Monmouth.
So did Chris Hogan. He spent three years on PSU campus and they still missed him.

Miles Austin too.

Now he’s the Jets WR coach.

I agree but that does not mean a program should not analyze why

Kenny Jackson’s brother and I believe Troy Hills cousin Roger was missed until someone saw him in basketball game

every coach who wants to remain a coach is analyzing this stuff every cycle. End of the day, state of Washington is almost 10x's bigger than NJ and a lot of places aren't easy to get to.
