OT: Cool storm, bro

This likely doesn't make the Official @RU848789 Radar because it's categorically a fish storm at the moment, but there's a hell of a thing happening in the North Atlantic right now. A deep low pressure system is spinning, nearly closed off, with a current central pressure of 976 mb, 70+ mph winds and 40' average wave heights.

Storms are the rule, rather than the exception, in the NA this time of year but this one is exceptional.

Can whales be harmed in such storms? I mean, they have to come up for air at some point, and it can't be pleasant when surfacing in 40' seas even for big whales.

Actually been texting about it since yesterday with a friend who is currently in Bermuda, as they've been getting hammered with gale force winds and heavy rain, although I probably wouldn't have heard about it if he hadn't texted me asking what was going on. Wild stuff, but not tropical - as you know the North Atlantic is known for powerful storms like this.

For those not interested in reading a little bit, the bottom line is that for larger ocean life, they tend to move quickly to calmer waters. Not sure how they know to do that, or know where the calmer water is.

Would not be surprised if it acquired some subtropical characteristics at its core as it moves over warmer waters of the gulf stream. NOAA did a fascinating study a decade or two ago on major bombogenoid nor’easters and found they do occasionally develop a quasi warm core given optimal conditions.
