OT. Construction on 49….

I’m taking my nephew to Hattiesburg tomorrow. Are they still working on 49 down that way and is it a long delay?

Check Google Maps or Waze for delays. Sometimes I have to take an alternate route.

Edit to add: It gets better south of Florence but there's also some work being done just north of Seminary. 49 Southbound traffic looked slow at times.

Usually, I'd say it depends on time of day. However, I've been to Gulfport and back twice this past week and 49 was slammed each time going north and south

Going through Richland/Florence area isn't too bad, but when you combine the construction with the lights, it can get lengthy.
To avoid this (if it isn't too far out of your way) get on hwy 18 in Brandon and 1) Take it to Star rd, then cut over. This puts you out on 49 just south of Braxton and north of Piney Woods School. OR 2) take hwy 18 all the way to puckett then turn right on hwy 13 to get on 49S just north of Magee

Another alternative: Take 55 to Vaiden, 35 to Mount Olive, and then 49 down to Hattiesburg.

That's 277 miles in 4 hours and 55 minutes from Southaven.

55 and 49 is 285 miles in 4 hours and 36 minutes.

But do you want to drive 2-lane Highway 35 for over 120 miles?

I had to drive down to Mobile a few weeks ago and 49 is still a **** show but it’s better. I went on a Saturday morning and left early, so I missed traffic. But I will say that the construction has progressed and is not as much of a pain as in the past. It honestly does not look like it’s too far from being competed, which means it’s probably got another 5 years.

I live in Star and have been using 49 for many,many years and it sux!! I dont even get on 49 in the afternoons on the way home anymore. I take an alternate route and I probably wont use 49 even when they are finished with it because IMHO it really wont be much better because all it does is give slow drivers still another lane to use (see lakeland dr). Also, they installed another redlight months ago and to me it looks like they may still add another in Richland. Doesnt do any good to add another lane if they keep putting more redlights in as this just slows traffic up even more.They are projected to finish it in summer of 2022.

If coming south on 55, you are still better taking 49 from I20 than Star/Brandon Road or another of the other above mentioned routes.

The only time it is really bad going south is after 4:00 during the week. Maybe after 3:00 on Fridays. It takes an extra 5-10 minutes more than it used to and maybe 20 minutes after 4:00. Sometimes you get lucky and just cruise right through.

there working on it south of collins. i would go thought the woods come out at star. then get off and go to prentiss and take 42 to hattiesburg
