OT: City 7/20 population estimates released today

Starkville has lost a couple hundred, Oxford gained a couple hundred since 2019. I thought MSU might be listed separately since it's not actually in Starkville, but it's not. Students of the universities are supposedly counted in the city of the school, but maybe those don't show up in the estimates. The "real" census numbers will be released this fall.

I don't think I've ever seen him post that MS is bad. Huntsville is a great place to live and work and MS doesn't have anything that compares, but that doesn't make MS "bad".

Mississippi is not bad place, but there has to be years of work and a lot of things changed for Mississippi to develop a city comparable to Huntsville.

If it claims that Starkville's population is 25,540, then no, students living on campus are absolutely not counted.

Also "couple hundred" is an odd way to describe 88.

MSU campus is not in the city, so you cannot count the students on campus. I also would venture to say that many of those living in apartments in the city limits are not counted and instead counted in their hometowns.

Basically the only places showing rapid growth are small places where the denominator is small.

Oxford is a relatively decent sized place doing ok, with estimated 28% growth since 2010.

Hernando, Olive Branch, and Southhaven are all 15% plus (which isn't stellar over a 10 year period, but at least is solid growth). not encouraging.

Is OM inside the Oxford city limits? I've never been there except for a couple of football games, but at the time Starkville seemed larger to me. Maybe their numbers do include a lot of students.

Correct. Starkville is most definitely 40,000+ for 9 months out of the year when you include MSU.

I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't it almost entirely the Federal government that "developed" Huntsville? As in the Redstone arsenal and NASA. What exactly did the state of Alabama do, except to latch on to federal money? Not that I blame them.

A factor could be the new developments in the county. I know at least 10 people (3 families) that used to live in the city and now live in the county. They aren't counted as Starkville I'm sure
