OT: Chicken Pox

Really excited with the start of season less than 7 day away. Awesome news in the recruiting front in both football and basketball. However, I have other things in my mind right now.

Next week, our group of four families have planned a 5 day vacation at the beach, two families per house. One of the families (the other house) has a child that just came down with chicken pox today. This child will not be joining us, but his 2 sibling will be. To my knowledge this family does not vaccinate their kids. One of the sibling also goes to camp with my son. Is there anything I should be concerned about? The other three families are all vaccinated. My wife and I both had the chicken pox as children.

Thoughts?

Perhaps consult a medical professional?

Don't go.

Or that other family shouldn't go. They are exposing everyone else there, and the people they will interact with over the following weeks.

The likelihood of the other sibling getting chicnpox if they've never had it before and are not immunized approaches 95%. Incubation period about 3-7 days. If you've had disease and your children are immunized you're fairly well protected. Children too young to be immunized (<1) or anyone none immunized or immunocomprimised should avoid contact. Rash is contagious til all lesions scanned which is about one week into illness. If immunized you may still get disease but usually much much milder. 6 lesions versus 600 in natural disease.

It goes without saying, I'm putting the call in first thing in the morning. However, one of the moms was able to reach out to her pediatrician before their offices closed today. Long story short, the kids are at risk for a milder version of the chicken pox. More importantly, the adults who had chicken pox as children are at a higher risk to reactive a dormant virus that causes shingles.

To complicate the matter, the doctor of the non-vaccinated family apparently claims that there is no concern. Now, I did not speak with him personally.....

This is all alien talk to me and I expect to hear different opinions from different doctors, but just wondering if there are any first hand experiences within this community.

Thanks for your detailed reply. I only saw it after my previous post. You've made a very important point that I have to consider. The day after we come back from this vacation we will be attending a 1 year old birthday party. I guess I will mention that to our doctor when we speak tomorrow.

I had actually got back into this thread to post this. In your shoes, I wouldn't go if that family is there.

I say, burn the second house down. The family has nowhere to stay and won't sick up your Labor Day vacay.

Or, if you wanna be generous, burn your house down. You have nowhere to stay, they can enjoy their holiday.

Shame on that family for still going. I would be pissed the eff off. Make sure you pickup some yellow caution tape. Wrap it all around the other house and keep your kids away. When you get there, tell them that one of your kids just came down with zikabirdnile flu. That's should do the trick. Oh, burn a couple pieces of furniture in the back yard to show how serious you are about not spreading that zickabirdnile flu. Good luck.

The adults who've already had chickenpox are no higher at risk to develop shingles because of exposure to child with chickenpox it would be a random event unrelated

How does a child get into school without being vaccinated? I thought it was mandatory?

Perhaps they home school or they are not vaccinated for chicken pox?

Seems rather non caring on the part of the non vaccinated family. Friends should be considerate of friends and their kids. My opinion, not a pro, but they should not go.

Its very likely you did and it was a minor case that you didn't note . It's possible but very unlikely for people in our age group to have never been exposed to the chicken pox virus.

I probably only missed about 20 days of school my entire K-12 for being sick, cannot imagine having it and not knowing.

you could have thought it was just a cold. Not everyone breaks out in a body wide rash. Next time you have a physical and get a blood draw, ask your doctor to check your chicken pox titer. Simple cheap test.

it's running rampant in Italy and eastern europe--highly contagious--by the way I believe I've never had any typical childhood diseases like chicken pox but guess what don't believe it if you haven't been tested for anti bodies--get that shingles shot

The family with the kid that is infected is about as selfish as anyone could be. Yes, it sux for them that their kid is sick and that it has ruined their vacation plans. Or, that is how it should play out and most likely would play out with about 90% of responsible adults. The fact that they would even consider putting anyone elses kids and even adults in danger is complete BS. I don't know your level of friendship with them but I would certainly look closely at that.
If they are going, no way in hell would I go.

If any a discussion with the parents and they insist on going to the house, a possible solution is 3 days for the uninfected families and 2 days for the infected family.

very timely thread when it comes to my family..... My daughter is expecting and she has been doing some advance reading up on vaccinations for the baby..... she enrolled in a 7 part computer seminar by Ty Bollinger.....lets just say by the time you finish the seminar you would hesitate to get just about any vaccination....

I personally don't believe a lot of what this guy is touting, I was and am a believer in vaccinations...

I would suggest to the family with the non vaccinated kids to skip the vacation..... not the others.... the problem is their fault, live with the
consequences...

find it hard to believe anyone non vaccinated, born in the 70's or before, did not get chicken pox..... I would guess they had a very
mild, and then unnoticed case....

I had all four of the childhood diseases.....chickenpox, mumps, measles, and german measles..... no vaccines at the time, lucky me

I love how they're leaving the sick kid home and having a vacation without him.

I never went on a vacation with other families. Never appealed to me. One night of "togetherness" with adult family at a beach house is about my limit.

There was a long thread about vaccinations awhile back. I would dig it up.

Anti-Vaxers are beyond selfish relying on herd immunity while putting children too young for vaccinations at risk. How anyone could look at that garbage science and not vaccinate is beyond me.

As stated above, if they are that selfish to care that little about your family's health maybe it is time to reevaluate that friendship.

Because they are obviously very selfish people.

I did a very short search on this guy, didn't need to get past the first page of results.

Your daughter shouldn't believe a single word this quack is preaching.

If I had followed his advice on cancer, my son Tyler would be dead.

thanks for the input, I will relay what you have said here..... I have not read or listened to anything this guy has put out, but have gotten feedback from my wife and daughter, who believes him..... I can see a conflict coming between my daughter and her doctor down the line.... will try to intervene at some point.

My sister was hospitalized in 2015 because of a case of shingles. After seeing that,I got the shot the next day, having had chicken pox in 1961.

This is one area where I stray from the conservative dogma.
