I'll be staying the night in Hattiesburg in a couple of weeks and was wondering if Chesterfield's was still worth the price of admission. I haven't eaten there in probably 30 years, but remember it when I was a boy living in Poplarville. Everytime we had to go to Hattiesburg for any reason we ate there.

I always enjoy it. They have the best salads on the planet. I usually get that with some crab claws, & the open face prime rib sandwich.

Yeah, it's still good. I don't go there as often as I should because Hattiesburg might just be the best restaurant town in Mississippi and therefore has a lot to offer.

We had a couple of back to back bad experiences at chesterfields (ran out of certain foods). Aside from that, the food was never that good. This was three or four years ago and haven’t been back.

There are several better choices these days.

Go to Cotton Blues.

Be sure and call ahead to be sure they’re open. It may be about time for it to burn to the ground aGAIN.

That's a high compliment and times have changed

because Hattiesburg might just be the best restaurant town in Mississippi and therefore has a lot to offer.

What else is on the scene there? I dont remember there being many particular places to write home about in Hattiesburg. For as many challenges as it has, Jackson has some of the best restaurants for a city its size and demographics.

Bear in mind, I’m more of a fan of comfort food but here’s a list of what I like and some places I want to try out.

There’s the Robert St. John Empire of restaurants. I still haven’t been to his Midtowner.
Leatha’s is good barbecue— though I think it was better when it was in Marion County.
Murky Waters is another barbecue place that’s liked by friends in the Hub City.
Blu Jazz and The Porter are both promising— only been to both places once.
Jutama’s is good Thai food
Keg and Barrel & Keg and Barrel West— very good comfort food and great beer selection.
T-Bone’s Records makes good sandwiches.
Chesterfield’s is - as I mentioned - good.
I like Mack’s West for fish and seafood— I used to go to the old Mack’s Fish Camp off of 49 when I was a child.
Gold Post is a good sandwich place that I’ve not been to in quite a while.
Cotton Blues is good as is Half Shell Oyster House.
I want to try out Fika— it’s a new Swedish place.

Sure I will get told yet again what a ******** Jackson is by people that either don’t live here or want to make us seem like a third world country. So go ahead make your jokes about Jackson. That being said, if your being honest Hattiesburg is not even in the same ballpark as Jackson when it comes to quality restaurants. Jackson for all of its issues and problems has some of the best restaurants, for sure, in Mississippi and I would argue they can compete with many other southern cities. Now bring on the hate.

It’s not in the same universe as New Orleans, so get out here with that crap. Hattiesburg is decent, but it’s not the best in MS. Jackson and the coast area are both better. Chesterfields is solid option and the people running it have at kid at State. Lots of high end burger places and pub food places, but no place that just blows you away.

Not sure the last time you've eaten at Leatha's, but it is not very good anymore. I've heard Murky Waters is a pretender, but haven't eaten there, & Sully's is great.

Hattiesburg has good food for its size. Hattiesburg is about the size of Biloxi and would be comparable if it weren't for some of the casinos having high end restaurants Hattiesburg just can't compete with.

Jackson has some good restaurants, but I'm not sure what other southern cities it would compare favorably with. It's probably a little behind the coast, and the Coast's MSA is about half the size of Jackson's.

Once you get to a certain size, you really have to have some special restaurants to distinguish yourself. I don't think there's any particular food I would crave that you couldn't find a good example of (maybe it's missing some of the fusion type options?) but I don't know what restaurants it has that would distinguish itself from other southern cities.

Crescent City is under Robert St. John. I love the place.

My wife and I met Robert at the French bakery across the street from CCG. Found out he’s a state guy. I told him he should do something in Starkville, said he wants to keep it local. Last time we played USM in Hattiesburg he wrote an article about his favorite restaurants in town that included a steak joint called Donnanelles, I think on 49 south of town. Never been there but want to try it.

I never miss a chance to get a poboy or hot plate at triangle seafood when in town.

Slightly less chance of getting shot in Hattiesburg... but not by much.

I would suggest you visit an actual 3rd world country and then decide how bad Jackson is. Some of you people are so dramatic when it comes to Jackson. Unless you live in south or west Jackson, it’s not a bad place to live.

Back to Hattiesburg, the gumbo ya ya at purple parrot and crescent city is amazing. Seriously, some of the best I’ve ever had.

Hattiesburg has whatever you want to eat. It’s just a matter of choosing. Keg and Barrel, The Porter, and The Hog are quality watering holes (I prefer the original Keg).

Please list these restaurants? Parlor Market, it's OK, Manship, yes it's good, Bobaloo, Bravo, Keifers, Iron Horse, Hal & Mals, Food Court at Cultivation Hall? They are all fine, but none are in the running to be called some of the "best" restaurants. I'll give you Char.

Koestler Prime, Lou’s, Ely’s, Walker’s are the best and didn’t make your list.

Char, Tico’s, Strawberry Cafe, Frateesi’s, Amerigo, MM Shapleys, PignPint, 1908 Provisions, The Gathering, Table 100, Caet, 463, Saltine and Surin (with a Jutamas coming).

Jackson blows Mobile, Montgomery and Baton Rouge our of the water on restaurants.

I know this is a waste of time, but here are 147 +- Good places to eat in Jackson, Madison, Ridgeland, Flowood, Clinton, Flora, Pocahontas, Terry, Crystal Springs Area. There are no Michelin Stars here, but there are pitifully few Michelin stars anywhere.

I can leave my house in Clinton and be to the most distant restaurant or bar on this list in 30 minutes or less. I would recommend every Restaurant or Bar on this list (unless a WARNING STATEMENT is included). I am sorry if I left off your favorite.

Slightly less chance of getting shot in Hattiesburg... but not by much.

Well that’s just untrue. Hattiesburg has nowhere near the crime that Jackson has.

I will say that Jackson, for all the cheap shots we take at that city, does have an excellent food scene. Hattiesburg does as well, and for the relatively smaller size, has a surprisingly good food/music/social scene.

You're right about Hattiesburg not being in the same ballpark as Jackson as far as restaurants go. I lived in Hattiesburg for 5 years and now have lived in Jackson (Madison) for the past 5 years. It really is not close. The Jackson area restaurant scene is really good. I am not sure about cities outside of our state, but in MS there is no one else even remotely close.

You do realize most of those restaurants aren't in Jackson? No one in Flowood, Madison or Ridgeland looks to Jackson as the anchor of the community or as a leader in culinary delights or anything else. The central MS metro is not a happy continuous area with no borders, no one living around Jackson wants anything to do with it.

You're trying to make the point that Strawberry Cafe, Frateesi’s, Pig n Pint and 1908 Provisions are great restaurants? Average to good at best. Lou's gets some buzz, but it must have been an off night when I went.

Purple Parrot, instead, fwiw. one of the better steaks in Mississippi, if not THE best. They're high dollar cuts of beef, though

Really? I know of Sully's but I've not heard any friends mention them when it comes to food.
The guy who runs Sully's worked ages ago at the old Conastoga. Sullys has the best steak in town.
They also have a killer burger. Take trimmings from their ribeyes and put them in the grind piie.
