fashions come and go! Cargo shorts were in for a decade and now they are on their way out. Maybe in 10 - 15 years cargo shorts will become fashionable again. On a personal note I have not bought a pair of cargos in 4 - 5 years. As unfashionable as I am, I have known for some time that cargos were yesterdays fashion and we are now onto today. The cargos I have are all starting to show their age and pretty soon will be relegated to "work around the house" shorts. I will buy more cargos when they become popular again.

Admit it ... you stopped wearing cargo shorts because your (ex) wife browbeat you into it.

I also don't have a lot of expertise with my stated type of lifestyle. I've never actually been w/a hooker and I mostly avoid recreational drugs.

Well, damn. I've been living vicariously through you. Now I'll have to put you on my ignore list.

Brotherskinnyjeans,

Fortunately, as a 40 something male I only buy new clothes every 10 - 15 years so I'm right on schedule for when they come back in style.

I'm strictly a backpack man when I hike, and fit all that and more in there. Also, the phone is a map these days with the REI app.

I can see the point more with fishing, which I wish I did more often. That may remain a cargo-worthy endeavor.

Nothing wrong with the pack for an all-day hike or backpacking (hence the name!!), but imo, it's overkill for short hikes. Maybe a hydration pack, but for the most part I prefer the freedom and lack of giant sweat spot in not wearing a pack.

That said traditional cargo shorts aren't particularly comfortable for hiking - big, bulky and just begging to get snagged on a rock/branch/thorn bush. Something with low-profile zip and cargo pockets is much better - like those Arc'teryxs, but less overpriced.

Those kind of shorts are nice, but f Arc'teryx and their overpriced crap. $129 for shorts I'm going to hike through mud and dirt in? No.

You get what you pay for. The arcteryx pants are basically indestructible. The only time I've managed to damage a pair was snagging a leg during a crampon kick-in while ice climbing. But rock climbing, hiking, bush-whacking, backpacking, and lots of everyday wear . .. no issues. You can handwash them in a sink or a river and they air dry in a few hours. They weigh next to nothing. I've got pairs that almost a decade old at this point. And they stand behind their products with great warranties (you ship back products for free and they repair them and return them). OTOH, they are expensive at full retail. I haunt the clearance outlets at places like Sierra Trading Post and Evo for deals. With coupon stacking you can get some crazy deals. I got my Arcteryx Beta AR rain jacket, the last rain jacket I will hopefully ever buy, for over $300 off list.

I have Arc'teryx ski pants, and they have a big rip in them. I'm of the mind that anything like that is bound to get ripped, torn, shredded, or stained into oblivion, so I'm not going to spend too heavily on it. I have a pile of torn outerwear to prove it. The Arc'teryxs were half off and the laminate is still intact behind the ripped shell fabric, so no big deal. I think Arc'teryx has a lifetime warranty, so I guess I could probably get them replaced/repaired. Mostly I've found Arc'teryx reps to be kind of obnoxious - that, plus the name = f Arc'teryx.

Agree about shopping around - Sierra Trading Post is one of my favorites, Evo has grown pretty awesome in ski/snowboarding, Backcountry is tops in my book, and there are some great membership sites for big deals out there. I also have a local gear shop that has some ridiculous clearance prices- got a $100 softshell there for 17 bucks, no-name brand and not technical at all, but a nice all-around winter jacket. To tie back into the conversation, it's a super-versatile cargo jacket for travel - black exterior that goes with anything and oversized interior pockets that swallow up an iPad mini, beanie, paperback book, etc. I try never to buy outdoor gear/clothes for less than 30 percent off.

Columbia, Helly Hansen, Carhartt and North Face all still make & sell their own lines of cargo shorts.

They're not "going away", regardless of what the Brooklyn hipster crowd thinks.

Cargo shorts are useful, if not amazing-looking.

I think the more streamlined ones are tolerable, whereas the ones with bulky pockets look pretty bad.

On the left: OK. On the right: Ugly.

Check out Moosejaw for outdoor clothing and gear.

As for shorts, manmade material is key for hiking wear. No cotton. Ever. Opt for quick drying/wicking synthetics. Convertible pants are a good, versatile choice.

Skinny jeans at a football game on anyone over 35 is a complete disgrace, I don't care how fit you are.
Cargo shorts with flip flops or sneakers is rad!

I don't think this is "Brooklyn hipster".

They simply went out of style like painters pants and three piece suits. Basically, they are like "Mom jeans". They had a good run, but it's over.

Cargo shorts are pretty embarrassing. America is horrible when it comes to fashion, which is fine, but I'd never step out of the house wearing cargo shorts.

I had to google "cargo shorts" to realize what this thread is about. It turns about ALL of my shorts are cargo shorts, they are great ! love the pockets and fit. Are there really men who care about what is in style and fashionable, and why ?? I wouldn't think that men who are interested in clothes style would also like football.

Do you guys go out to eat in cargo shorts? This is an interesting thread. I don't even think I see these shorts. Maybe it's an east coast thing.

Another thing. Unless you are surfing, board shorts aren't to be worn. Especially sitting around a pool.

Nobody has gotten a hand job in Cargo shorts since nam.

Also the swamp *** can be pretty unbearable. I have about 6 pairs left that I haven't touched in about 5 years.

I'm glad we've limited this to just discussing cargo shorts on men. Cargo short wearing females are entirely a different topic.

I spend half my life on the golf course and their banned from Montclair Golf Club, so I wear them to RU games and hiking.
POCKETS…!
Is there an actual functional reason for them banning cargo shorts?

No. That's why I keep that stuff in my front pockets.
I find it uncomfortable to have stuff in my front pockets when I'm sitting down. I wear cargo shorts all the time and only put receipts in my front pockets.

I wear cargo shorts pretty much everywhere. What's wrong with board shorts at a pool? I don't understand why people care about fashion. I don't give a crap what some fashion dweeb thinks about my cargo shorts. I can comfortably carry around whatever I need to without crushing my nuts.

Love cargo shorts... More comfortable and the extra pockets help... I've been reading that cargo shorts are not fashionable for years. I really don't care what some millennial (I'm 30) that prefers salmon colored shorts thinks and apparently a lot of other guys don't either.

This. All I care about is comfort and function, plus I don't think cargo shorts look "bad" per se, although I'm not noted for my fashion sense.

Hopefully, people have also noticed that cotton tee shirts (as opposed to lycra-type athletic shirts), pleated pants, cuffs and mustaches are also out of style. Styles change. Nothing wrong with changing with the times.
Sacrilege...cotton t-shirts will never be out of style...

Ironically if you go deep into Hipster Brooklyn you got 24 year old girls wearing mom jeans on the regular, talk about hiding your figure.

The anti-cargo short world isn't really a hipster thing, it is more a metrosexual / uppity thing. Basically the sorority girls grow up and want to pretend to be fashionable and then try to dress men. It is all propaganda to emasculate men and sell murses.

I do agree with lawmatt78 posted, cargo shorts that fit right and don't have bulging pockets can be fine in casual social settings (tailgating anything goes). If I am going to dinner or out at night, unless its an outdoor concert, I am wearing pants/jeans.

IMO you need to have pipe cleaner legs to wear the types of shorts the fashionistas are trying to force on us men that have done squats at the gym.

Where it the world do people wear lycra-type athletic shirts anywhere but the gym?

Pro poker player here. I'm in cargo shorts 99% of the time when I play because it beats the hell out of bringing my backpack. Phone, wallet, keys, earbuds, phone charger, and a zipper pocket that I carry my casino chips in.

I go everywhere in my cargo shorts in spring, summer, and fall (and warm winter days), cause they're comfortable, functional, and I have the legs for it. That includes many high end restaurants.

Where do you play mostly and what games/stakes? Used to play a ton on line and won a decent amount and still play about monthly at Parx - mid-level stakes (10-20 limit Omaha hi/lo or 2-5 no-limit) and do well at that level. Retiring in a few years and plan to play a few times a week and hope to augment my income. Have thought a little about what it would be like to play full-time and always figured I'd get bored. Of course, I wear cargo shorts when I play, lol.

I only ever wear basketball shorts or cargo shorts, as do the large majority of my male friends. I don't really see what the big deal is. Most of those other types of shorts are usually tight and short and generally uncomfortable to wear.
