I never wanted a cat for I'm a dog man. I ended up with two after a breakup. They minded like dogs, & could even fetch. Lost one last night after 7-8 yrs. Never thought it would affect me as much as it has. I've never personally had to do the honors of returning a pet to the earth. Here's hoping the beer fortifies me for what must be done.

Poor some Blue Moon* out for Isis O'Reiley & all our lost pets this evening for me.

Not sure at all why I felt the need to post this. Misery loves company?

Sorry for your loss. Not a cat person either and I didn't want a dog either but kids and wife had to have one so we got one. I do love dogs. Just didn't want responsibility. Now she is part of family and I know it will be hard when she goes.

Our family's dog died about 7 years ago. I had him cremated and we keep his ashes in our den.
I knew we would move one day and I wanted him to always be with us.
Silly? I guess so.

I was on a business trip to Seattle when my dog passed. My sister who kept him wasn't equipped to deal with it. So I had to do it when I got home in the pouring rain. Talk about somber. It sucks. Sorry for ya.

Sorry for your loss man. I dread the day when my dog passes on. I bought her shortly after I moved here in 2005 and she's been with me through a lot of stuff since. 2 moves, a marriage, birth of a child, and all manner of things in between, she's been with me through it all.

I had to have one of mine put to sleep couple years ago. It was sudden, we noticed we hadn't seen her in a couple days, she was hid up under the bed.

Turned out she had some kind of neurological issue, couldn't stand or walk, was nothing vets could do.

They let you hold em, if possible, while they inject em with whatever it is that puts em to sleep then the 2nd one that stops their heart. I have never cried like that in public since I'm sure when I was a toddler or something.

The whole way home I was just sobbing, telling my wife how she didn't deserve that.

Death, no matter the circumstances is all too sudden imo, and I love my pets as much as any person walking the earth. I feel your pain bro, no pet will replace him/her but I would definitely recommend getting another one from a shelter or something when you feel up to it.

Hell, makes me tear up just thinking about that night. Riley was a damn good cat. Super loving. Every cat I've ever owned was 100% worth it. I love my dog too, he's an idiot but I love him. Life's tough, that's for sure.

Think I'm gonna go get a kitten tomorrow now.

Had a lab for 12 years. He was my constant companion, rode in my truck, went to my office, slept at the foot of my bed and retrieved more ducks than I can count. He got in poor health.

The only thing that saved me when he died was my daughter being born the same day. It was like he knew.

Almost same story 7 yrs ago. Had to put to sleep the dog that raised my boys. Cried and cried. Afterwards confirmed he had throat cancer. Still keep his picture. He was my first son. Haven't been able to have a pet since.

Sorry for your loss.100% understand as I always get very attached to my pets. Had a twelve year old min pin backed over in my driveway years ago then two years later had one hit by a car. Then in '13 had a four year old min pin that had high blood pressure and didn't know it. He lost his eyesight and then died from kidney failure. Most vets don't have a way to check for blood pressure. Sux big time

We lost two Dogs within a year of each other had both 12+ years, one Scottie and an Akita. Still tear up if I think about it. We were lucky to have those 12 years with them. Like was posted above, when you are up to it check out the pound, best way to remember a loved pet is to provide a home for a pet that hasn't found a good home.

It`s very deep hurt that I`ve had to experience a number of times with dogs and cats (all strays). Very ironic I was thinking in the last day or two how I`m going feel the next time I have to do this (we have three cats). I absolutely dread it. Sorry for your loss man...I know just how you feel.

I'm with you Bro. Nothing more painful for me than to hold a pet as it takes it last breath. Feel very guilty for doing that. Pet cemetery in my back yard. 5 dogs and 1 rabbit. Got 1 left and don't think at my age I want to go thru it anymore.

Lost a cat about two months that we'd had about 14 years, so I know how you feel. Great cat. We had her cremated.

Ten years ago (February 8, 2007), my cat Toonces died. She first wandered into my trailer in Woolmarket, MS in November, 1990. She wouldn't go away, so I started feeding her. After asking around (to make sure it wasn't anybody else's cat), I went down and got her spayed. She would attack my feet at 2 AM if they were moving around under the sheets. We'd have vicious "fights to the death" with her scratching up my hands and arms. She would come when you called like a dog.

She was my cat for 16 years- through being single, meeting and marrying Swandawg 69, my four kids, and moving on up in the world. We buried her on the land we owned at the time in the country outside Byram.

It's like Mr. Bojangles- After 10 years I still grieve.

Single parent home and being the oldest made me the digger of dog graves growing up. After remarrying and having dogs and cats I have had to be with during their final minutes. That last shot will put tears on you quicker than anything.

The only thing worse is the dog that disappears. The one that never left the yard unless you were with them their entire life and you either let them out the door for a bathroom break, or say goodnight as they lay in their outside box when you go in the house for the day... only to never see them again.

Those hurt worse because you never know what happened.

Don't be ashamed abt it.

My mom dropped off a yorkie puppy on a visit to see me. She got ran over about 4 years later.

I never would have imagined how attached I could get to a dog much less a lap dog.

My first dog was a collie. He was stupid, but I loved him. I got him right before I started 5th grade. He died my sophomore year at State. I came home one weekend and my mom and sister came home with a puppy. We had gotten a German Shepherd a couple of years earlier and this one was too. I met my mom and sister in the driveway and started playing with the dog. I asked my mom if my dad knew and she confirmed he did. I said we couldn't have 3 dogs because we didn't have room. It all of the sudden hit me and I said he had died. I fell over laying in the driveway for about 30 minutes completely inconsolable.

My two German Shepherds were shot with a bow and arrow by my parents old neighbors.

I got my Bully a semester before I graduated State. They surprised me and wanted me to name him right away. They said that when you have kids they want to know their name. I said the only one I could think of right offhand was Bully. I lived with him in my apartment during grad school. We got married and moved off. My wife had expressed concern that she wouldn't be able to deal with him due to his size (he was around 90 pounds). Shortly after living there, he became her dog. He loved her. We moved a couple of times and when we moved back to Columbus in a 1 bedroom apartment he stayed with my parents. We moved to Tupelo and my wife was pregnant so they kept him. About a month before my kids were born my mom called my wife and she just said "Let me let you talk to him." My mom told me and I just dropped the phone and balled. My wife could not console me. Best dog ever.

I loved all of them. I got my kids a smaller dog. His name is Dak. I fear the day my kids learn what it's like to lose a pet. I love him too.

Losing a pet sucks. I'm sorry for your loss.

I too, recently buried at beloved pet, a Maltipoo named Gus, or Gusman we called him. My daughter got him as a puppy her junior year at State. At the time she had three roommates and Gus had an irritating habit of marking his territory throughout the apartment namely in their shoes. So at Christmas break he came to live with us. That was twelve years ago. I still remember his puppy breath. He took up with me and hardly ever left myside in twelve years. He watched me view State sporting events on TV, and put up with my cussing and hollering. He passed away in November and I miss him a lot, still cutting onions when I think about him.

My older brother use to work in Starkville during the summers and we had a house in green oaks neighborhood. He'd get lonely during the summers so I'd come up to spend the summer with him (I was about 12) and I'd bring "rocky" my French bulldog that had more personality than most people I've met. He wore a choke chain and we'd hook him on a run line. Well one after I put him on the run and about 30 minutes later I came to get him and he had wrapped himself around a patio chair and hung himself. I spent hours trying to bring him back but never wanted to give up. I buried him that afternoon with my brother. We loved that dog like a brother. I also had a Boston terrier with me that visit and he got out and I found him 2 weeks later. He got parvo and ended up surviving it. He's still with me today and one hell of a partna.

Sorry for your loss. A good dog is truly man's best friend.

I thought I might be losing my lab this week. I let him run loose when walking the golf course early in the morning. Unfortunately he likes to nibble on all sorts of crap(literally). Whatever he ate came out both ends last weekend. So he had a 5 day stay at the local vet on IV's, antibiotics and other meds. Several hundred dollars later he is laying next to me on the sofa. Brought him home today. I should have learned my lesson a few years ago as he swallowed a fish hook at another location. Had to take him to MSU's Vet school to get it scoped out. A costly service needless to say.

No more running off leash for my good buddy!

Sorry to hear that bud, but I 17ing hate you now too. I unexpectedly lost my 8 year old bulldog right before Christmas and I can't stand to even think about him still. It kills me. That's after my lab died 6 months ago and I haven't even gotten over grieving for him. Burrying the lab was the hardest thing I've ever done. I've never cried so much in my life. My bulldog was my best friend though, we had been together through a lot of stuff. There was no way I could burry him so I had him cremated. 2 17ing dogs in 6 months. Thanks for reminding me and ruining my night you *******. Just kidding. Maybe.

My wife rescued a stray pug. He ended up being my dog when we got married. He lived thru a couple moves out of state, hard *** Midwest winters, and kids being born. Damn dog was tough as nails and a blast to be around. He was 14 years old. Holding his head up when they put in that last shot was horrible. It was hard but the vet said something that helped. "He was a damn good friend to you for over a decade. It's time to return the favor and not let him suffer."

My wife swore we would never have an inside pet. My twin boys & I begged her but she wasn't having it. About 2 years ago I took a chance. I brought a 6 week old teacup/apple head Chihuahua (Penny) home. She was upset but it was cold out & didn't want to put her out in the cold (she does have a heart). She told me to take her back as soon as I could, but I was in the middle of a big job & it would be awhile.

The next week we got a call from her stepmom that her Dad's cancer had come back & come back with a vengence & moved to his brain. He only had a few days. We had to immediately, that night, go to South Carolina. We had no choice but to take Penny with us.

After the funeral we get back home and my wife couldn't sleep much for several weeks. She would be up at all hours of the night. Just my wife and Penny. Long story short, they bonded. My wife fed Penny, provided her with water, bath her and talked & cried to her. I wish I could take the credit for helping my wife get through such an awful time, but I'd be lying.

If it wasn't for that dog, my wife would have had a whole hell of lot harder time getting through it. And she will tell you that today. I asked her about a week after we returned if she still wanted me to take Penny back. She said heck no! Now she buys outfits for her & when she goes shopping she gets Penny something.

She had a disagreement with a family member the other day regarding dogs and said, "Penny is part of our family & we love her like we do our children". Where ever my wife goes Penny goes and if someone doesn't like it, too bad. All this from someone who never wanted an inside pet. Point is dogs are special & IMO a gift from God. they help and change people for the good, It's our job to love them, take care of them and cherish them. They are part of the family & it hurts like hell when they pass.

Cochise I don't drink, but if I did I'd drink one for Isis, so a swallow of sweet tea will have to do. My condolences. The advise on getting another is good advice if you can do that.

My parents had to put their 12 year old bulldog down in November. It was rough. And my time is coming soon too. Mine will be 12 in June. If it wasn't for the damn arthritis he'd be in exceptional health for his age.

I'd rather find him dead in the morning than have to put him down in a year. I get choked up thinking about it.

Sorry to hear that CC. Recently had to do the same with a 13-year old Beagle. By the time she passed she only had one eye and three good legs. That dog was tons of trouble but we still miss her and laugh about all the mishaps she caused.

Im in the same boat as a lotta u. Had black lab for 11yrs. She was my world thru some really difficult years of my life. Then became my 1st daughter after marriage in 2012. The most difficult part about having to put abby down was that what she had (lypoma) wasnt killing her. It was non cancerous but it wouldnt stop growing. We had surgery to remove 6 times and every vet said there just wasnt enough skin left. Really sucked worse than i can put into words having to hold her as she passed knowing the reason wasnt because of some crazy illness but a fatty tumor causing little harm.
Had her cremated too and i will pray every night that i get to see her again!

Grew up on a farm and buried many pets. It was tougher as a child. As the ...

years went by, my emotional investment in animals lessened. It wasn't that I didn't like my/our pets, I just realized that I wanted to invest more into the people in my life.

I know I have a different outlook than many.
