What are the best bottled in bond bourbons that are reasonable to come across?

"Bottled in bond" doesn't really get you anything if you're proficient in TTB "label-ese" and have a working knowledge of the various distilleries and their products. In essence, all it means is that the spirit in the bottle was distilled at a single distillery in a single year and barreled at 100 proof for four years (or more).

Hell, Old Forrester markets a bottled in bond bourbon. So does Beam.

Several expressions from EH Taylor, which is a Buffalo Trace brand, are pretty accessible in most chain liquor stores. Coincidentally, EH Taylor is the man who championed the Bottled in Bond Act in the late 19th century.

Technically all the Colonel EH Taylor bourbons are BiBs.

WhistlePig is a rye whiskey made in Canada, bottled in Vermont. The 10 is a solid pour if you like rye, which actually is a good winter/Christmas pour with the spicier elements of rye whiskey.

At this point, most of the older Whistle Pig products aren't entirely of their own making. The 10 year-old bourbons and 12 year-old ryes are blends of Canadian spirits that were purchased at startup.

That said, most of the Whistle Pig story is about their experimentation in finishing, which is an entirely worthwhile pursuit. It did, after all, make Johnny Walker products both famous and expensive.

Like all such things, it's worth as much as you feel about it when you drink it. If you like it, then it's good.

I am interested more so to compare. I received a bottle of King’s County Bottled In Bond for Christmas.

I have mainly been a craft beer guy, but on doctor recommendation I’m moving to dry red wine and whiskey.

Thinking maybe I'll mash up some barley for the ol' fermenter. Malted barley is the easiest thing in the world to work with, because it converts on its own - quite unlike corn, which can't convert at all without some sort of assistance from another grain (or amylase).

After many months of searching, I am enjoying my first bottle of Eagle Rare. Also picked up a Redemption Wheat. Confirms that I prefer the wheated bourbons. Also enjoying Old Forester Rye and Noble Oak in my current rotation.

I found a local store that has many of the hard to find Wellers. I'm debating whether to overpay for a Weller 12 or Antique. What's the most I should pay? And don't say whatever I'm willing to pay!

I love that old Forester rye. And their straight bourbon, for the money, is outstanding.

You have trouble finding Eagle Rare? My local Wegman's has it in stock pretty much always. I like it a lot, but stopped buying it when it got more expensive than Elijah Craig.

Breckinridge bourbon, just got home from the hoops game.

Tried this as part of a flight at American Whiskey in NYC before the Michigan game. The others were Makers 46, which I've enjoyed very much previously, Legent and Garrison Brothers. I really liked the Breckinridge. The other two were not as good. The Garrison was overpriced swill.

I debated picking up one of the Old Forester Bourbons, but I needed a decent Rye for my Old-Fashioneds!

Yes, never seen it around here until a few weeks back. There were 2 bottles at ShopRite Liquors in Garwood. I've been to Wegman's in Woodbridge a bunch of times and didn't see it there. Maybe I'll start seeing it now.

You need to try Uncle Nearest 1884. Known as the smoothest whiskey in Tennessee. Had a glass just for the big come back this even. Here's to Nearest Green.

I'm currently drinking an ECBP that's pure rocket fuel at 137 proof. Keep on the lookout for Larceny BP, Old Forester BP and EC Rye as far as new bourbons and whiskeys go.

I hope you're icing (or watering) that down really good.

Any thoughts on the whisky/scotch tasting in Morristown in March? How's the section? worth the price?

Neat is the way to go for me more times than not. But tonight going with a big ice cube.

If you drink a 137 proof spirit neat, you're just wasting money. Get it down to about 86, to ensure that you're unlocking all those complex flavors. They get locked up in the ethanol at ABVs above 43.5%.

Japanese Whiskey has gotten crazy popular and crazy expensive over the last few years. It seems the two most popular brands are Hibiki and Yamazaki. However anything from them with a age statement has gotten very expensive. I managed to get two bottles of Hibiki 12 a few years ago for around $80, now they are going for crazy prices (I saw some on wine-searcher for over $400). I never had the Yamazaki before but they jumped in price too. You can still find the 12 year old for under $150 but it was $80 a few years ago as well. Hibiki does have a NAS called Harmony that is supposed to be good and should be easy to find. I never had that one myself. Nikka is another brand but I dont know much about them. The Hibiki I have is good but I still perfer an Islay over it.

I was at a whiskey tasting in Jersey City two weeks ago and the Barrel Whiskey American Vatted Malt was very good. It's 100% malted barley sourced from 8 different distilleries in the US.

Interestingly, there's no standard or official regulations for an American Single Malt, like there is for single malt scotch. American Single Malt is starting to become a little more popular as you may have seen Stranahan's or Woodford's Straight Malt at the liquor store. Some producers are trying to get together and create a framework for American Single Malt

This is one of those things you could argue about all night I guess - but its highly likely the reason people feel high proof is a waste of flavor is simply that their mouths get numb at such a high proof. But if you ask people used to very high proofs, they're always going to pick the high proof because it just has bigger flavor.

Surprised people liked the Breckinridge. My buddy was gifted a bottle and we had some at the Super Bowl. As bad a straight bourbon as I can remember having. And I enjoy $12 bottles of Heaven Hill and EW Black

Yeah, def hard to find Eagle Rare around here in Union County. Which I'm OK with. I'll always take regular Buffalo Trace over it.
Agree re: OF Rye. Was very pleased with it. Their bourbon products are a hit and miss for me. Like the OF 1920 but not much else that I've had.

The gateway to the Islay world along with Laphroaig. Once you go peaty, it's hard to go back to any other scotch.
Have you had Connemara? It's a peated Irish whiskey. I'm a bit of a beginner when it comes to whiskey but I know I like peat. If you've had that one, what's your opinion on it?
