I cannot find Midwinter anywhere. I'm assuming it's a seasonal release, but I figured there would be some stragglers left on the shelf.

Also, Woodford Brandy cask is excellent. Another one I like is Breakers Port Barrel Finish.
Midwinter comes out around Thanksgiving for around $90 to $110.

I was at Total Wine in Cherry Hill and was looking at a Canadian Whisky called Caribou Crossing. Like Blanton's has the horse on the cap, Caribou Crossing has a Caribou on theirs. Anyone ever try it? May end up going back and grabbing it to find out for myself.

We have found a nice smooth taste in the Scottish single malt Bruichladdich. Goes for about $55 where you can find it. We have the 2009 version.

You have to be talking about the High West Midwinter not the one from Glenmorangie right? I picked up the Glenmorangie version from a overseas auction. I read they cant sell it here in the states because of the name. Too bad becuase the stuff is very good.

DO NOT BUY PRODUCTS FROM HIGH WEST!!

They distill practically nothing and their "distillery" is basically just for show. All of their products are blends and most of the distillate is produced by the MGP (Midwest Grain Products) ethanol factory in Indiana.

Henry McKenna Single Barrel. 10 year BiB single barrel from Heaven Hill under $30. One of the best values in bourbon, and I love the flavor profile of the standard HH offerings as well.
Missed this post the first go around. Winning two categories (bourbon and single barrel) in San Fran meant finding this for $30 has gotten tougher and tougher. I generally see it for $40+ but still not a bad buy considering as you state 10 years and BIB. Definitely has some oak to it.

Yes, it's been released in NJ for a while now. Wasn't at the time I posted.

My current favorite bourbon is Angel's Envy.
I really want to try the AE Rum BA Rye. I'm a bigger rye fan than bourbon fan. For bourbon, track down the Old Ezra 7. For $40, nice Barrel Strength bourbon at 117 proof.

Yeah I was referring to High West Midwinters Dram. Carry on.

I'll look out for that, thanks. Wanted to try the Angel's Envy Cask Strength, but at $200 a bottle if you could even find it, that's a pass. Maybe Catherine Lombardi will open one for the Spirits Project.

Just started working on a bottle of Calumet Farm bourbon. I’ve had it before, and when I found it in sale, I scooped it up.

Nice...

Just finished off a bottle of Elijah Craig. Best budget bourbon out there...can be had for under $30 in NJ.

I recently purchased a bottle of Rowan’s Creek, which is part of the Willett family, and EH Taylor rye. The Rowan’s is 100.1 proof and cost $40. I’d say it’s a good buy at that price. As a gift I received Glenlivet Founders Reserve. Haven’t tried it yet.

MGP actually produces a high quality rye whiskey. High West does a good job blending it.

Any "whiskey" distillate taken off a high temp plate of a column still is not "high quality", it's "high quantity". All the flavor has been stripped. The essence of the grain is lost. What you're tasting is wood.

Any whiskey that tastes good to the drinker is a high quality whiskey. High West and other whiskey sourced from MGP has done quite well in various whiskey tastings.

If people object to the marketing of MGP sourced non distilling producers whiskey as small batch old recipe whiskey then obviously that disingenuous and illegal. But High West is a pefectly tasty whiskey and quite reasonable in price.

It's passably tasty and far too expensive for a product that is sourced at $600 / bbl.

Wow is that right? So 4 bucks or so a bottle.

I'm in the wrong line of work.

The Fed gets $13.50 / proof gallon excise tax. The states get whatever they get. Bottling costs, distribution, fixed cap costs... You're actually making less money buying from MGP - the reason why you do it in the first place is because you don't have the capacity in place to produce aged product. Remember, you can't legally call it "bourbon" without a derogatory aging statement on the bottle unless it's at least 3 years old.

If you're doing it in house, with your own grain and your own mash / still line, the materials cost of production is less than 1.00 / bottle, but you're either sitting on it for a few years making no money or you're selling it as "baby bourbon".

I can think of lots of whiskeys $5-10 more not sourced from MGP that I would pass over on my way to a bottle of the Double Rye. Angels Envy is sourced from MGP and it is quite expensive and in high demand (not that I think it’s worth the price)

"Sucks worse" is not a suitable defense against "sucks".

I like a whiskey if I like the taste. I think High West blends a decent product that’s worth my money. They’ve been able to differentiate themselves from a lot of the other MGP sourced whiskeys so they’re obviously doing something right.

Yikes - I generally like your posts Ru4Real but this one... I currently have about ~55 bottles of American Whiskey sitting on my shelf, and my absolute favorite that i can keep buying is High West Rendezvous Rye. I'm not sure what your problem is with them sourcing from MGP. They only thing they hide is the ratio of their mixes. Here is their website for Rendezvous: https://www.highwest.com/products/rendezvous-rye.php. They specifically tell the purchaser the following:

Age(s), Distilled by & Mashbill(s)
A blend of older Straight Rye whiskeys ranging in age from 4 to 7 years.
Straight Rye whiskeys:
95% rye, 5% barley malt from MGP
80% rye, 20% malted rye from High West Distillery

So not only do I not take away points from them using MGP, i give them points for telling me they do it, and which rye they source, and about how old it is. Most "producers" pretend they didnt get it from a different distiller, other than it not saying where it was distilled on the bottle.

I can think of lots of whiskeys $5-10 more not sourced from MGP that I would pass over on my way to a bottle of the Double Rye. Angels Envy is sourced from MGP and it is quite expensive and in high demand (not that I think it’s worth the price)

Could not agree more - Double Rye and Rendezvous for me crush most near their price point (i wrote the above before i even read what you wrote). Angel's Envy? Overpriced and average.

The go-to spot for the high rollers is the Oak Bar in the Hermitage Hotel. Other than that, there are some fair number of decent whiskey bars. I've heard that Dirks Bentley's place sucks, but that's second-hand.

Got these over the holdiays. The GlenDronach 18 Alladrice is great Christmas time scotch. I have not tried the Macallan 12 double cask yet. Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask is what Im having right now. Definitely can taste the rum influence in it. Balvenie is one of my favorite distilleries

If you like Lagavulin then you like peat. Lagavulin is a Islay scotch, one of the characteristics of Islay is smoke. Some other Islay scotchs are Ardbeg and Laphroaig (the love it or hate it scotch they say). Both are very good IMO. Some people try an Islay scotch and hate it. They cant stand the smokiness. The first time I tried Lagavulin 16 I loved it. Smelled like a camp fire. My wife thought I was hanging near the fire pit. You can smell it from across the room. You cant go wrong with Ardbeg 10 or Laphroaig 10. If your just starting out one I recommend is Balvenie 12 double wood. It will tast nothing like the Lagavulin but it has a sherry and oak influence. It's an excellent scotch.
Just curious what Lagavulin did you get?
