This story is sort of what I was talking about- it's rural and lower class people having to deal with data centers- much more so than many others.

This actually shocks me. I had thought all the massive data centers would be built in the middle of cities, like we do power plants and such. You know, where we have all that wide open space between city blocks.

Yes and people were all against nukes back in the day, libs didn`t want any fracking(can you say energy independence for the most part), now its data centers. The responsible people are trying to compromise due to the pros and cons. However, to place a moratorium on them is very short sighted and foolish in my opinion. Again, we are in a race with China for AI dominance and they will take advantage of anything they can. Yes there are conservative people who have concerns but when it comes mostly from the left you know there is an anti-capitalist and/or anti-country method behind some of it. If you are against AI, may I suggest you give up your computer, cell phone, smart TV`s, smart cars/appliances or whatever else they have enhanced for all of us.

I disagree with your framing of the entire premise.

Many are not compromising. There are efforts being forced on communities right now- with no compromise at all. Trump just said on Wednesday that they should be welcomed - while the National Republican Senatorial Committee was encouraging republicans to take a harsher stance.

It's not coming "mostly from the left." It's bipartisan. I know that's seems very tough for you to admit to based on your ideology. But that's a fact.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee warned on Tuesday that data centers have become a “sleeper issue” for the entire midterm election cycle and encouraged more republican politicians to speak out on the issue because polling shows more Americans are against them at the current time and Democrats are leading on the issue currently.

More than half of Americans say they’re more concerned than excited about the growing use of the technology in daily life, according to a report from the Pew Research Center published Tuesday

In Pennsylvania, the democrat governor has called for a pause and strict requirements on data centers- something his Republican opponent has also now called for. Data centers are very unpopular across rural Pennsylvania, especially with Republican voters and independent voters.

AI data center outrage is showing up everywhere from ads to elections

I am not against AI. I haven't hinted that I am against it. The ability for you to make up things that I haven't said or suggested is an interesting insight.

Recognizing that data centers are a political earthquake that people are concerned about- that both conservatives and liberals and independents have said they are worried about- doesn't mean one is "against AI" no more so than a Gamecock fan complaining about the bathrooms at Williams Brice means they are against the Gamecock program.

You keep saying it's liberals pushing back against data centers when rural areas across the country are fighting back against data centers every single week- areas that aren't liberal - like Oconee County right here in South Carolina.

The most liberal areas of South Carolina- probably Richland County and Charleston County haven't banned data centers. Oconee County has voted to do it.

This issue crosses political boundaries- thank God.

I remember when all we heard about from the radical lefties was "we need bodycam on all police so we can catch all the police brutality!!!"

So they put bodycam on police officers, only to find that nearly every single time the police were in the right.

Now the lefties decided they didn't like bodycam so much.
And us independents favour anything which promotes accountability for everyone, e.g., bodycams.

The first sentence is the big one, imo. There are some people, and even one in this thread, that think these actions are a big "gotcha" against Trump.

Id be willing to wager those people are puppeting their talking points from sources that know this is not new, but also know few will actually bother to check.

I admit, I had to look it up myself, like you. But Im glad I did, and wish others bothered to do the same.
Yes, but Trump has taken it to the extreme, significantly more than any predecessor. I think that attacks that one side or another is "socialist" really needs to stop. Social Security and Medicare are "socialist" programs. Do we want to get rid of them? I don't think either side wants to (though there are some nut cases who will answer in the affirmative). We have had socialism in this country longer than I have been alive. But I guarantee you there will be ads this Fall making socialist accusations. Then the other side will counter making socialist accusations. Lets be honest, Trump started with the socialist accusations. He needs to stop. If he doesn't, there will be counter accusations. What should be focused on is what will make the lives of people better. I learned a long time ago that the number one priority of people when going to the voting booth is their pocketbooks/wallets.

I think Trump's use of purported "national emergency" is also a concern.
It's my concern too. Trump is being urged by far-right conservatives like Steve Bannon to do that. Trump has not shot down the idea. Investigations by many, including the conservative Heritage Foundation, have found that instances of non-citizens voting are rare. But Trump's average job approval rating among multiple polls is 38%, putting him underwater by 20 points. This is why Trump started the "socialist" crap. It's desperation. Our Founding Fathers purposively put states in charge of elections because they feared the executive becoming dictatorial (like King George). If the socialist trick does not work, I can see Trump calling a "national emergency", which will be a dangerous road to go down to. Trump needs to do what every President has done: run on his record and let the chips fall where they may. For crying out loud, the Republican party has a huge financial advantage over the Democrats. The Democrats are broke. The DNC has done a poor job of fundraising. Trump has raised $780 million. Republicans have been begging him to use his money to, for example, help out Paxton down in Texas. But, so far, he has refused. What the fk is he going to do with that money? Can he keep it for personal use? I do not know what the law is on that.

I just cant get excited over the idea of "Trump taking it to the extreme". Hes doing what others have done, just more of it? It wasnt a bad thing before, but it is when he does it?

I wager this sort of action will continue, and it will be a non story, or the end of the world depending on which party is in the white house.

As for the socialism thing? I agree, we've had shades of it forever. But unless the rise of the DSA is being blown way out of proportion, I think we may have a rising issue with it.

I've been watching a lot of Sheriff Lamb videos on YouTube.

Our country is in total disarray due to prosecutors and judges that don't hold violent criminals accountable.

Time after time after time, in these videos, repeat offenders are not prosecuted or sentenced.

You can basically get away with anything these days. Criminals can beat the hell out of cops (on camera) and walk away scot-free.
I watch a lot of Sheriff Lamb’s videos too. He’s a good dude - I love his insight!

I think bodycam videos give us all a proper perspective of interactions between the police and the public. Most of the time they give me further reason to respect/appreciate the men and women in blue.

True it is not the first time. That said, I can only quote the words of AI: "SIGNIFICANT departure from traditional U.S. policy"; "UNPRECEDENTED"; "RADICAL break from previous administrations"; "NEW industrial policy direction":, Is "Trump taking it to the extreme"? I would just quote the words of a real life character, Jim Williams in the book and movie, "Midnight In The Garden Of Good and Evil": "Truth, like art (and like words) are in the eye of the beholder". The issue is not whether it was "bad". The issue is whether the government taking equity stakes in companies is "socialism". It undoubtedly is.

If socialism is a rising issue, BOTH sides will have talking points.

Do I want to see the DSA become dominant in the Democratic party? No. I miss the Republican party of old I grew up with and was accustomed with as an adult. I vaguely remember Eisenhower. Still, I was among those who liked IKE in the 60s after he left the presidency. I liked Reagan (who I voted for twice). I never voted for George W. Bush. But I like him. But the Republican party has been taken over by MAGA extremists. If there is any doubt that extremists have taken over the Republican party, all one has to do is look at Republicans who have disavowed todays Republican party: politicians like former Senators Jeff Flake and Bob Corker, former Governor John Kasich, former Representative Liz Cheney, former RNC Chairman Michael Steele; conservative journalists like David Frum (who also worked in the Bush 2 administration), Jennifer Rubin, Charlie Sykes, George Will, David French. I could go on and on and mention more names. I do not want to see the Democratic party taken over by DSA-types. If the primary elections as a WHOLE are looked at, they have not succeeded in taking over the Democratic party. I do believe that once Trump exits the stage, Trumpism will leave with him. After all, his average 38% job approval rating does not portend well for his ilk.

I`m all for as many bodycams as law enforcement can obtain. And to say Trump started any dialogue about socialisists/socialism is laughable. The man trying to do so much for this country - going strong at 80 yrs. old when he didn`t need the job - being called a "dictator," "Fascist," on and on while they would love to have one-party rule, no checks and balances(just listen to them wanting to make the Supreme Court packed so they would always vote one way), etc. A lot of the left admits to embracing socialism/communism, which has led to death, famine, poverty despite the shiny prizes they lie about will happen. Can you say "Democratic Socialists of America," which are really socialists that are supposedly Democrats. And now Schumer, etc., are embracing El Sayed, who hates America, Jews, etc. What a freaking joke! They call it their "Big Tent," which is a load of crap. They are so power hungry they will sell their souls to the devil if it means retaining power. Enjoy the freedoms you have now because if the Dems ever get control of the House, Senate and Presidency it will be all over for freedom in this country as we know it. Exaggeration? Just look at some of the countries in Europe headed that way(that`s what happens when you let anyone in your country that wants to come - many want to change the country they go to, instead of adopting the host country`s culture) and the past failures of socialism/communism in Cuba, Venezuela, China, Russia, etc. These leftists are so insane some of them recently celebrated Fidel Castro`s 100th birthday and said Marco Rubio was guilty of genocide there. I guess if you can believe America deserved 9/11, that Israel deserved 10/7, that Charlie Kirk deserved to die and that Luigi Mangione is some type of hero then you can believe anything.

Hey Skuddy.

No big deal. My wife laughs at me too. She just ordered me to go to a couple of stores to pick up some things for her. I better do it since today is our 51st wedding anniversary. I don't want to tick her off. After all, I out punted my coverage. Me worry? I figure since my wife has had the best, why should she settle for less?

This is a perfect example of how prosecotors and judges are ruining our country.

Watch the video until the end and see how this insane woman got off with just a fine.

She ran from a cop that had just changed her tire. Then she almost killed several people on the interstate.

Psycock, I respectfully disagree, from my independent point of view, Trump and his family are doing far less for our country and much more for themselves. They are absolutely enriching themselves.

Ike??? Sometimes im reminded that there is an age gap between us. :)

This actually brings up something I was thinking about. There are a lot of young, polotically active people who are legitimately shocked at things Trump does. I just look at a lot of it and note that it, or something si.ilar has been done before. And it will be done again. It will take some people decades to get to that point. (It did for me)

You're also right on the DSA thing. The party is conquered YET. But it appears to be coming. And imo, those are the types of radicals that can do a lot more damage than the typical back and forth between R's and D's.

I argued a bit with some people over the patriot act. I was told, who cares if someone listens to your phone calls if you have nothing to hide.

But my concerns are rarely with the systems, but hiw they can be abused. Right now, cameras filming everything sounds like a good idea to me. The potential misuse hasn't approached the potential good, imo.

I have no problem compromising and accepting the use of such cameras in main areas like main streets in small towns- in rural areas where there is no possibility that they would be able to pick up people standing on their own property or where they could video people's private residence. (many bigger cities already have numerous cameras that are used for facial recognition and other uses)

But the one not to far from my house has- I think- 3 cameras on it and all of them can easily pick up people's homes at that intersection and people in their yards.

It's my concern too. Trump is being urged by far-right conservatives like Steve Bannon to do that. Trump has not shot down the idea.

You have a sizeable (but apparently shrinking) portion of the population that accepts anything Trump says or does. Yes, his poll numbers are in the toilet pretty much these days, but I am not even referring to that.

It reminds me a bit of Obama and how for some he was untouchable- but it's more pronounced with the people that I know with Trump. His fans will defend and rationalize anything he does.

That people who scream "socialism" at everything and then ignore or shrug their shoulders when Trump takes equity stakes in some 30 private companies is simply an example of a disconnect and hypocrisy.

That they will fall back on "well, so and so did it" like a 4th grader running home to mom and saying "yeah mom but my friend John also threw a rock at the window too" is interesting.

They simply ignore the hypocrisy of screaming socialism at everything but ignoring the socialism of Trump embracing the government taking ownership stakes in private companies.

If Joe Biden had taken ownership stakes in 30 private companies, without Congressional approval or even consulting Congress, every right wing radio and tv show would be spending 24 hours a day ripping the hell out of the idea. Right wingers would be going ballistic on message boards and social media.

Trump does it- and it's "ho hum" - and the crazy thing is - it's a Republican administration doing it.

But as I have mentioned before, precedents are being set with Trump's involvement with many different companies at an unprecedented level. The next President will simply push it further.

I better do it since today is our 51st wedding anniversary.
Hey- Congratulations. Impressive. Really. My grandparents were married 63 years. My parents were married 54 - then my mom passed. My wife's parents have been married 53 years and both sets of her grandparents were married over 55 years.

We just celebrated our 29th. So, we are trying to carry on the tradition.

You mean the cameras are on public property? Where they are legally allowed to be?

You do realize that cameras are allowed to take pictures OF private property if they are on public property.

Ever hear of Google maps?

I don`t know about the "enrichment," as Trump and family were already very well off. Can you name another President that didn`t accept their $400,000 salary? He`s the only one I know of - of course the media never reminds the public of that. The ones that bother me are the ones who came to Washington without a lot of money but leave with a boatload of it due to insider stock information, etc. Nancy Pelosi is the poster child(well poster elderly) for that, although I`m sure she already had money. What about Obama, Biden, et al? Bernie, Ro Khanna, many others are the biggest hypocrites out there, railing against billionaires, "the oligarchy"(makes me laugh), etc., while Bernie is rich - from what? Did you buy a lot of Moderna shares before it increased by over 100% earlier this week? I didn`t either but Ro Khanna did. I guess he just had really good timing with that buy - no outside knowledge that the public didn`t have, right? Guess he is a stock genius. His wife already drives a $140,000 Range Rover. But let`s tax the wealthy people who are creating jobs in his California. Oh wait, most of them are leaving - if they haven`t already - for Texas, California, etc. I wonder why. Same for Mandami and Hochul in New York - why would anyone want to start a new business there?

That they will fall back on "well, so and so did it" like a 4th grader running home to mom and saying "yeah mom but my friend John also threw a rock at the window too" is interesting.

They simply ignore the hypocrisy of screaming socialism at everything but ignoring the socialism of Trump embracing the government taking ownership stakes in private companies.

But as I have mentioned before, precedents are being set with Trump's involvement with many different companies at an unprecedented level. The next President will simply push it further.

Or, try using the brain god gave you, and understand people are pointing out YOUR hypocrisy for calling it out when one person does it, but not when someone you like does it.

If multiple administrations have done it for decades, why is your outrage only now showing up? Its obvious to everyone else why that is. I dont expect you to have the self awareness to admit it.

And again with the precedents. Im wondering if youre old enough to realize there were administrations before Trump. Why is it only a precedent for Trump and not for the people who did the same before him?

TDS at its finest.

If you're talking to tree, hes already been shown that Trumps wealth dropped his first term, and is barely growing the second term.

He refuses to acknowledge facts though. Head in the sand, etc.

I agree with you on the politicians getting rich. It is embarrassing how many of them gain millions off of normal salaries. I saw one meme that sums up these young democrats well.

Bernie is coming from one of his 3 houses, flies in on a private plane, where he then takes a limo to a rally decrying capitalism. And he gets cheered for it.

It`s also patriotic things he does that should gather praise but the TDS crowd will never go there. He had a hand in America getting the World Cup. had the UFC match, today the Grand Prix 250 that looks awesome! God knows what they would have had to celebrate America 250 if Harris/Walz were in power. Probably would have had a Drag Queen Go-kart race for kindergarteners and elementary school children.

I would wager the 250th would have been an apology tour for America being so "evil".

Congrats on 51 years. I hope you guys have a good one!

My wife and I hit 30 back in June.

All I remember about IKE is his last month in office when he was celebrated with a ticker tape parade. Truman, Prez before Ike, is my all time favorite President. Both are rated high by presidential historians.

I would be VERY surprised if the Dems nominate a DSA-type for President in 2028. If they do, I'd support Rubio if he was the Rep nominee. I don't trust Vance due to his connection to Peter Thiel. A DSA-type vs Vance, oh my. I don't know what I'd do. I hope Marco runs. But, again, I expect the Dems to nominate a moderate. They normally do.

If they nominate a moderate (a Beshear, Shapiro, Ossoff, Emmanuel) and there are no structural changes in the country, I can see a DSA-type elevated in 2032. The middle class and below have really been struggling since the 1980s. And now the young people coming up are having a tough time. I'm a lucky SOB. I have made some lucky and great investments. So, I'm kind of insulated. If they did away with Social Security, I could sell some of my stocks and put the money in short-term bonds, CDs, money markets and live comfortably on that interest income for the rest of my life. But not everybody has that option.

Here is the thing nobody understands : It's not "Right vs Left". People keep thinking it's all about conservatives vs liberals . HELL NO!!!!! It's Top vs Bottom. In 2016, there were 2 POPULISTS running for their respective nominations: Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders. After Sanders lost, 12% of DSAer Bernie Sanders supporters voted for Donald J Trump. That may be hard to believe but, it's true. Remember Trump in 2016 said "I love the less educated". Remember that Trump in 2016 appealed to Black voters saying their lives were no better under Democratic Presidents. He said "Vote for me: what have you got to lose?" A lot of people looked at Trump thinking he was going to make them much, much richer....maybe not as rich as him, but pretty well off. I grant you that other Presidents and their family members have gotten richer while in office. But Donald's $2.2 BILLION just last year, his boys company connections getting Defense contracts, Donald's stock trades with VERY SUSPICIOUS PROFITABLE timing (I used to regulate the selling of stocks, mutual funds, bonds, etc in this state like the SEC does at the Federal level; so I know a little bit about those things). And now Trump wants to sell peaks into his Truth Social to Wall Street investors for $100,000/month. That's insider trading. That's "jail time". They make Obama and Hunter Biden look like paupers in comparison. At the same time , people are struggling due to inflation due to the tariffs and Iran War. People look at the Trumps crazily enriching themselves while everybody else is struggling. Is it any wonder that Trump's approval ratings are in the toilet? People have become disillusioned with him.

I did not major in economics in school. I minored in it. Is inflation all Trump's fault? No. Has he made it worse due to tariffs and his obvious miscalculation on Iran? YES. Inflation tends to go in 30 year cycles. When the Scoop site was around, I said the same thing about Biden. I said covid payments to Americans due to the covid mess he inherited from Trump was unnecessary. I remember getting the check. I asked why am I getting this check? I don't need the money. I'm fine. But hell yes I kept it. I'm sure I was not alone. THAT program contributed to inflation. But yes Biden and Trump were/are victims of a historical inflationary cycles. But they made and have made it worse. Your friend and my friend "Mrs Satterfield" gave me continue grief for saying inflation goes in cycles. She purposively ignored the fact that I said Biden made it worse. Hopefully she is not on this forum. I have not detected anyone so obnoxious and an a$$hole here. So maybe she is not posting here.

I ran my fingers (mouth) here.

It's interesting that you only mention Democrats in this list- an accurate one

But never mention any of the republicans that are in the same boat. It's as if you don't even realize the republicans that have been accused of and involved with the same thing.

if you consume almost exclusively right wing news and/or talk shows, that probably explains it.

Ha.

But I agree on the DSA and 2028. 2032 is another matter entirely.

I read some random article (fwiw) about the youth swing to Trump due to frustration. Then they got behind Mamdami for the same reason.

Same group of voters, just flailing at this point due to frustration. These are the voters that concern me, because they'll see the DSA and say "why not?". Then we can get real unrecoverable damage done.

Our views are so different so it's hard to discuss with someone

I see Trump as a self serving, serial liar. I always have, even before he was in politics. I think a little of that has to do with his inability to be humble about anything and make himself the center of attention at most anything he does. I also see him as a mostly mean-spirited person in many respects- one that seeks to damage other people that don't agree with him if he can.

I think if Trump was just someone you knew like a coworker or neighbor and acted like he does with the arrogance and turning even solemn events into political speeches with insults thrown in, the people that say they like him would hate his guts and avoid him.

That's not to say everything he does is bad. Even some of the worst politicians do the right thing sometimes. I felt that way about Bill Clinton. I couldn't stand him- never voted for him, made fun of him often- but even I admitted he did some things right. The Indy car event is not a bad thing. I'm not interested in it and haven't paid it any attention but it's not a bad thing.

The 250 celebrations would have taken place no matter who was president- and they would have been much less focused on who the President is, compared to these events with Trump involved. After all, Congress created a committee - a bipartisan one that was approved by Congress to lead the 250 events- and Trump largely sidelined it in favor of his own group that was more about him.

No other president, republican or democrat, would have been on stage trying to get his/her picture taken with the winning World Cup team when it was time for the team picture like Trump did. (Span ended up editing Trump out of their official picture because he wouldn't leave the stage). Anyone else would have realized that wasn't proper and it was the team's time to shine with their team, not with a politician horning in. But that's Trump. He always has to make it about himself.

I have no idea why you included the idea of a "drag queen go kart race" into such a discussion.

First, I don't know why such a thing scares you so much. I think that sounds damn fun. Second, I don't know why right wingers immediately go to "drag queens" on everything as if their life is consumed with drag queen issues. But I admit, that would be fun. (FWIW- I am close with 2 trans people- and none of us have ever attended a drag queen anything- but maybe we should- LOL).
