Growing up over there, I remember seeing this every time I rode down I-20. There was also a Pink Floyd THE WALL album cover on 61 North by the Culkin Road overpass. Was etched in '79 or '80 by George Wilkerson, his older sister and two brothers named Bob and Bart Bell - the latter 3 being St. Al students. It lasted about 15 yrs.

Yep. Saw that every trip to Vicksburg. Not too far away was a big billboard "Get US Out of the UN". Seems like there was other hill art as well but I can't recall details.

I never saw the Allman tribute but remember The Wall. I saw it while hauling watermelons from south Mississippi up to Greenville one summer around '80 or '81.

Vicksburg is the one place in Mississippi that I’ve never been to that I wish to visit(I guess I would hafta add the Stennis Space Center.) I want to visit the military park. My GGG grandfather was captured at Fort Donaldson by Grant, released in a prisoner exchange, and then captured again at Vicksburg, again by Grant. Obviously that branch of the family tree were lovers, not fighters. The next time I’m around Jackson I’m setting aside a day for that.

Their son Chris lived next door to me one semester at Hinds and is just one of the nicest people on the planet.

No, there was only one "Get US Out" sign but it's funny that-that sign sat between the south frontage road and Porter's Chapel Road behind it. Across Porter's Chapel Road from the sign was Bob and Bart Bell's house.

You definitely need to spend some time in the park. It’s is amazing to me how many people in MS and northern Louisiana have never been to it. Yet people travel there from all over the country. Being a small town, it was fun as a kid to go check out the license plates in the parking lot in the summer when we were there to run wild.

Give yourself an extra hour or so to see the Old Courthouse Museum in downtown which was built pre-civil war. The numerous rooms full of Civil War, Native American, and local history pieces are awesome. The courtroom upstairs is insanely cool too. It had to be one hell of a sight to be present as someone was on trial with the huge windows open and looking over the Mississippi River.

The Illinois monument is really impressive. One step for every day of the siege. And the guide told us that no rain ever comes into the open hole at the top because the updraft of air keeps it from raining in. There's also a woman who is on the wall of the dead. She pretended to be a man and enlisted I think at age 14 or 15.

I did some work for the Sheriffs department and that tower in the Warren County Jail (diagonally southwest from the Old courthouse) is the gallows. Last execution there was 1939 but it is still in place I believe. There is no tour or anything but I did get to see it back in the 1990s. It was eery.

I'm suspicious about the "no rain enters" comment. From personal experience, I can confirm leaves and bird **** definitely enter through the opening. Also was there when a quartet of MC students showed up and sang a couple of a cappella numbers. Quite extraordinary the acoustics.

Make sure to stock up on bouncy balls before you visit the Illinois. It’s fun as hell to throw a bunch of them in there.

I used to have a picture of confirmation that it does indeed rain inside the Illinois monument. Unfortunately I can't find it now, but rest assured rain does enter the top of the monument and lands on the floor. The updraft may help prevent a lot of rain from entering, but some still gets in.
