When I was a kid and was bass fishing, I always thought that you had to let a bass take the worm and run with it for a long time before he would finally take the hook. I went fishing with someone one day and I asked him how long you had to let a bass run. He told me "Son, when you feel that bass hit that worm, he isn't carrying it in his hands". I learned quickly, as soon as you feel the hit on a worm, set the hook.

Amen! My father and me have had this argument bunches of times over the years. I swear my hook and catch rate is better if I set the hook on the first thing I feel.

I have used that bit of advice ever since I was a teenager over 35 years ago and that was very wise advise. If you have ever seen a video of a bass taking a worm, they use a gulping motion that inhales the entire worm in their mouth. They don't just pick it up by the tail and swim around with it. If they do, it is just because they aren't big enough to get the entire thing in their mouth and you would be throwing him back anyway.
