In the market for a 55 in TV and trying to determine if it's worth the cost to buy Sony. Anyone have any thoughts on Vizio, Samsung, Hisense, LG, and Insignia? Also, do I pay up for 4k or is not worth it at the moment due to lack of programming being shown above 1080? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Samsung owns the TV market.
My stance is buy the best on the market because even though it will be obsolete in 5 months you at least have a solid tv for a few years.
I've always had Samsung TVs. They're the best on the market. It's them, Sony, and Vizio imo.
I was just perusing TV ratings last night OP and have some of the same questions. I'm def going 4K but unsure about UHD vs SUHD. I've always been pleased with Samsung but I've read great things about the LGs.
My whole family uses LG for TVs and we love them. Seem to be a better value than Sony, for sure. Very comparable to Samsung.
I've been researching this as well and have figured out that the two brands to look at are Samsung and Vizio. The Vizio E-series is supposed to be very solid.

Absolutely no reason not to go 4k or UHD at the moment. Bought a 55" Samsung UHD at WalMart 2 weeks ago for $498...you could maybe save $100 if you want, but why would you...
As an installer/integrator Vizio P & M Series are the best bang for the buck. Go as big as you can take, 4K and definetly HDR. HDR will make more difference than anything (when content starts coming). Bothe of these series Vizio have it all and a really nice Android remote.
You don't mention price but if you want the TV with the best picture on the market right now it is the LG OLED. Not the cheapest but the best. These others, Samsung, Sony, etc.., etc..., are all competitors in the " best TV at a cheaper price" category and for most folks will be just fine.
Yea, I'm definitely out on the OLED unfortunately. Amazing picture. Way out of my price range. I want to spend $400-600 so that limits me greatly. I do think I can find a Samsung 55 in 4k under $600 if I am patient. Maybe Memorial Day Weekend sales or something.
I have 3 LG OLED's in my home. The one I have in my bedroom I grabbed at a Best Buy for $1000. It was a floor model as is purchase and I could not resist. I believe you can get a new 55" 2016 LG OLED for $1500 if you search hard enough. Of course the newly released 2017 65" LG OLED tops out at 8K so you choose how much you want to spend.
Having the 65 inch from the E series delivered and setup today. Will provide a review once I see it in action.
As the 2017 models come out look for the 2016's to drop in price and grab one then
Just got the same one at Walmart. $498 for a 4K 55" Samsung was an absolute steal. Had to go to 4 Walmarts to find one who had any in stock. Well worth it.
That sounds right up my alley. What city did you find that deal in?
Edit: After looking online, I don't see anything close to that price at Walmart. Was it refurbished?

one thing i will say... do not early adopt with TVs unless there is a major major major technology change...
UHD was that change (and it really wasn't because the technology was around for a while, but there was no standard that defined the technology... so you had really really bad HDR tvs out there) ... SUHD is not that change.
I early adopt with phones, because i expect my phone to last 2-3 years, when i buy a phone i am buying this year's model.
i always buy last year's model with TVs... a TV is going to last you 10+ years... don't buy a cheap tv... but buy last year's top of the line TV. It will be 25% to 50% less than this year's model. top of the line picture quality isn't changing that rapidly.

if you and the watchers are always in the "sweet spot" it can be good, especially if TV is stationary and you don't plan to rotate it at all. otherwise it doesn't offer a lot of bang for the buck.

I have always had Samsung/Sony...... 6-7 years ago on a black friday best buy online deal I bought two 39" Insignias for my kids rooms and the picture was very good. I think I paid $199 for them
Fast forward to now, and In my outdoor college football viewing paradise I have a 55" Samsung, a 48" Insignia and those same two 6-7 year old 39" Insignia TV's.......... To me there isn't a noticeable difference between all 4 TV's other than the size of the screen. These TV's live outside 365.
I doubt I will ever buy one of the more expensive versions again but to each their own.
No it was new. Got it at one of the Anderson stores. It was listed at $599, but when they rang it up it rang at $499. Not sure which Anderson store, I was using gps. Live in Clemson and don't know the Anderson area very good. Best Buy had it for $799 on their website by the way.
Just saw a Samsung 55 inch 8000/8500 in Sam's for under $1K last week. Best TV I have ever owned - bought it last year at Best Buy on sale @ $1600, regular $2100. They had the 6500 for under $600. I was in the Auburn Sam's!
Yeah my brother bought both when they were relatively new. Probably 8 grand worth of TV's .I don't think he used the 3D part of his former TV more than 30 minutes the entire time he had it. He has a 78" curved and it's awesome........ but you do get the glares people complain about. He also said about both that if he had it to do over again he wouldn't have bought either
I can't convince myself to go below 60". Even though 55" would dwarf my current 42" Plasma and would save me a few hundred.

Need to find that. Does it have at least 120 mh refresh rate? Trying to avoid 60 for sports viewing.
I have 3, a 46" LG, a 46" Sony, and a 55" Samsung. Happy with all three after 4 years. All are 120 mh, 1080, and look great. Bought the Sony and the Samsung at the same time. I actually may like the picture on the LG and Samsung the best. Overall, all three are good sets. Buy the one that has the best looking picture to you
