I've had a hankering for some good BBQ lately and thought I might quiz the board for your favorite BBQ joints. I'm like Johnny Cash cause I've been everywhere man, but the I have been very blessed to spend significant time in Texas, Memphis, and Kansas City in my life and have explored some of the best BBQ joints in the world and I know there are still hundreds out there I have not been too.

I will list a few of my favorites and then take notes from some of you fellow carnivores.

Top 3 famous joints in no order.

Louie Mueller BBQ in Taylor, TX
Joe's BBQ in Kansas City, MO
The Bar-B-Q Shop in Memphis, TN

My favorite place you probably never heard of...
Dylan's BBQ Saloon in Dallas, TX

Best bite
Tie between Joe's Z-Man sandwich or the Texas Twinkie at Hutchin's BBQ in McKinney, TX.

Memphis:
Ribs is the original Central BBQ on Central Ave. Elwood's Shack is a close 2d.

Pulled pork is Payne's but they haven't reopened after closing for COVID-19.

Hole in the wall joint near Clanton, AL, place called Smoking Guns BBQ. They have a sandwich called the BigGun. 9 bucks. He weighs each sandwich to make sure you get what he promises. It consists of pulled pork, brisket, and smoked Conecuh sausage with a sauce and slaw. I can eat 2 or 3 meals off it.

His baked beans contain the same medley of meat and are a meal to themselves. Rib tips are also excellent.

I don’t know about a ton of places outside of Memphis and Mississippi, but Central BBQ and Germantown Commissary have always been my favorites from the Memphis area. Central more so for their actual pork, ribs, and chicken whereas Commissary is one of those places where every damn thing on the menu is good. Their desserts and sides are delicious

I'm a sucker for a good BBQ sammy. I know the purists prefer the meat itself, but man my favorite thing to make in the world when I smoke a butt or brisket is a BBQ grilled cheese on Texas toast. Unbeatable.

This is the correct answer. Everything on the GC menu is a 9/10. Nothing is bad. You can certainly find better ribs, pulled pork, sausage, sides in other places. But when it comes to their menu as a whole, GC is the best and most consistent.

Some well-known favorites of mine:

Sugarfire Smokehouse - several in St. Louis, MO and I think they expanded to Dallas? I've eaten at the Olivette location as well as a setup they had at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in Maryland Heights.
Leatha's - now in Petal, MS, where I've not eaten. I ate at the old Foxworth location as well as the one on Highway 98 West in Hattiesburg. I liked the food better at the original location.
Montgomery Inn - Cincinnati. I've only eaten at the one that was on the Ohio River. I don't think it's there anymore.
Dreamland - Tuscaloosa original location. I've only eaten there once and loved it but it was ages ago. I've heard it's not as good as it once was...

My favorite place you've not heard of unless you're from there or read the New York Times:
The Pit - Durham, NC (another location in Raleigh). Good Carolina style barbecue located next to Fullsteam Brewery. It's probably not the best barbecue but with family and friends living in the area, it's a place I like to visit.

Best bite:
Tom and Bingo's Hickory Pit Bar-b-que, Lubbock, TX. Excellent Brisket Sandwiches (sliced and chopped). It made Texas Monthly's Top 50 BBQ List in 2008.

Bonus rounds...

Had to try because it was there:
Pitt Bros BBQ, Dublin, Ireland. The meat is good. Their sauces weren't for the most part. I recommend their hot sauce as it's by far the best of the bunch and they offered free ice cream to customers.

Will try out if I ever find a barbecue place there:
The Spanish know how to prepare meals-- and especially pork. If I ever find a BBQ place the next time I go to Spain, I will eat there.

Memphis BBQ Company - my favorite ribs. Their spare ribs are top notch

Germantown Commissary - Pulled pork

Central BBQ - pretty much everything on the menu is great. Their smoked chicken wings are very good. I like their pulled pork and brisket as well.

17th Street BBQ in Marion, Illinois. - Not the place you would think of as a location for good BBQ but we tried it on a road trip and were very surprised. We make it a point if we are traveling that way to make a stop there either on the way up or on the way home.

Sugar Fire BBQ - St Louis. I recommend the ribs or brisket.

Early Grumpy's was indeed very good. Late Grumpys was awful. Last time I ate there my baked beans were cold, my order of onion rings was 3 rings, and my bbq sandwich was served on loaf bread.

Early Grumpys really was a very good stop. It lasted about a year. Those early season football weekends sitting on that back patio and watching that big *** tv with a picture of beer was alright.

They only served ribs on Saturday if I remember right. And early on in their tenure, they were very good. Those grumpchos and catfish were solid too.

And the longer it stayed open, the worse it got.

How about some good BBQ places up and down hwy49 and I-55 in Mississippi? I need some spots to try. Doesn't even have to be great; just solid. Ok with a few options in and around Hattiesburg, but otherwise I don't know of anywhere that can distinguish itself from Dickie's.

I rarely go there because there are other places in New Orleans that I'd prefer to eat, but Blue Oak BBQ on Carrolton is good.

Memphis BBQ Company, Central BBQ are very good. I've had Germantown Commissary catered which was pretty good.

Years ago, had a great pulled pork with slaw sammy at Wild Horse Mountain BBQ in Sallisaw, OK.

My fav of all time is still the original Leatha's in Foxworth.......

On this end of 49 and 55 youve got Abe's in Clarksdale and Memphis BBQ in Southaven. As DCD mentioned their ribs are as good as any Ive ever had.

I've not been to the new location in Flora (where the Blue Rooster used to be), but I really want to try out Dave's Triple B.

It's not on 55 or 49, but Sylvester's Mississippi Style BBQ is outstanding.

It’s been so long since I’ve eaten somewhere besides Memphis Barbecue since it opened.

Favorite all around Memphis Barbecue Co. Memphis peacemaker is my favorite.

My favorite ribs used to be Blues City Cafe. They haven’t been the same since their chef passed.

Best bbq joint burger Topps.

Best bbq joint catfish Corkys. Not going to lie. I like their pulled pork and half smoked chicken also. Let the hate begin.

Since I’m going to get hate for the last comment I’m doubling down. When Rendezvous ribs are on point they’re hard to beat. Problem is they’re not consistent every visit.

90's Corkys was as good as it gets. But they went too commercialized and trying

their best to become a fast food joint. I'd put Commissary near the top along with the others mentioned. And I'll throw in One and Only. It's a step behind some of the others but still pretty good. I'm in the same boat with Rendezvous. When their ribs are good, they are top notch. Problem is that only happens half the time.

Is Ranchero’s in Clarksdale still open? Back in the late 80s they had some awesome ribs. I know the place would burn down every 6 months. Are they still in business? I haven’t been to Clarksdale in 20 years.

Surprised that I'm not seeing any love for One & Only. A fairly new player in the Memphis BBQ scene with a few locations. This has been a go to place to get our Q fix without the hassle of Germantown Commissary.

On a side note GTC has opened a larger location in Collierville. The food is good but not the same as going to the original location kind of like going to MBC.

Off the beaten path old school place is Bozo's BBQ in Mason, TN. Walking into that place is like stepping back into time and has not changed since the 60's. Random fact about Bozo's, they filmed a few scenes for the movie Walk the Line there because of the decor.

Totally agree. Some of the best ribs I've had came from there but so did some of the worst.

I probably haven't traveled and tasted as much bbq as the rest of y'all but the wife and I were traveling through Arkansas at dinner time. We stopped at Hoot's BBQ in McGehee Ark which is in the middle of no where and they were crowded at 8:00 pm on a random week night. It was so good that we made sure to stopped again on our way back home. In addition to Hoot's I had really good bbq at the Pecan Lodge in Dallas.

Central BBQ, Germantown Commissary, and One & Only BBQ are where it's at in Memphis. I've tried the BBQ Shop but was underwhelmed.

If in Charleston, SC...You don't think of Charleston as a BBQ destination but I'd put Lewis BBQ and Rodney Scott's BBQ up against anything in the country. John Lewis opened Franklin's BBQ in Austin (partnered with Rich Franklin) before deciding to do his own thing here. It's world class Texas BBQ- brisket and whole short ribs are the ticket. Rodney Scott just won a James Beard for his whole hog BBQ. If ever in this area, check 'em both out.

Strange as it sounds, there's a really good place in upstate New York. It's Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, NY. I like their wings and brisket, and the collards with turkey necks are fan-freaking-tastic.

John Lewis is legit. Not only was he at Franklin's in the beginning (Aaron not Rich... No biggie), but he also helped put La Barbecue on the map as pittmaster (La Barbecue is owned by the granddaughter of my favorite place Louie Mueller and is pretty damn good.) Glad John has taken Texas BBQ to Charleston.

Anybody ever done Salt Lick over there near Austin? I saw it on TV and it sounds awesome.

It's a well known tourist trap. Lots of better BBQ to be had in Austin. Starting of course with Franklin BBQ. Go early, like 5AM and the "line" is closer to a tailgate than the DMV. Just ever so slightly below that is Black's and La Barbecue.

If your uber/taxi/lyft driver tries to get you to go to Salt Lick, it's because they get a free mail when they drop you off.

Best for everything else is a toss up with them and Memphis BBQ company. Germantown Commissary is good but the new one in Collierville was terrible when we went. Never understood the love for Central. The one on summer wasn't good either. The majority of the time if I just want a quick BBQ, I'll just hit Captain John's in Collierville. I'd prefer doing it myself but never have time anymore.

I tried One and Only in Southaven. Didn’t like it. The brisket was shaved not sliced. Didn’t taste like brisket. Tasted like lighter fluid. The smoked chicken was way over cooked. The bbq sandwich was average.
