My farm is 40 acres and it begins on the bottom of a mountain and then heads up hill to the top. It was clear cut decades ago for ranching. As many on here know I have sheep. In the summer they graze at the top of the mountain. Up till now I have just used my tractor to drive up there. But it is slow. I have a friend who wants to sell me his John Deere Gator for $6,000 (15 years old, decent shape). Is this a good price? I have been thinking maybe just a good atv like a Polaris would be sufficient. But I am ignorant of the atv world. Thoughts?

I don’t know much about the ATV world other than UTVs/gators are more expensive. And for good reason.

I have a 2009 Polaris 450 Sportsman that came with a winch and a snow blade. Bought it for $3,800 two years ago. Runs well. Does what I need it to do (push snow). But a UTA would be way easier for other projects. It’s a bear to haul anything with the ATV, unless you have a trailer.

I think I would use a UTA a lot more during my chores than I do my ATV. But they’re damn near twice the price.

Exactly. The damn things are expensive. But they have hauling capacity. And sometimes I need to haul 250 gallon tanks of water up there. The UTA’s can do that. But the atv’s are so much cheaper.

Is his gator a 4x4? What is it’s top speed. I have one I absolutely love it

I believe mine is like 5 years old the box can hold a 4x4 pallet, it 825i. It does like to eat fuel, but it does idle a lot. It has a winch. Top speed 42 which is fast enough. I can put a gas powered air compressor on the back plus carry oil it’s great to service pivots. As a person gets older it’s a lot safer that a atv, just like driving a small pickup

Yes it is a 4x4. It has a nice bed and a winch. Runs really smooth
Several things to check, make sure the boots are tight on the shafts that go to each wheel, if there loose or cracked they should be replaced. There is also a universal joint on the drive shaft that should be greased, at 15 years it might need replacing. does the box have a lift assist cylinder? $6000 is a little high but if he’s taken good care of it then it’s probably worth the money

I would think they're common enough to get a good idea of whether the price is fair. I have no idea but that seems like a lot of dough for something 15 years old. Maybe not!

Thanks. Good info. He just had the universal joint on the drive shaft replaced two years ago. I will check on the other points.

With lights and turn signals UTVs are legal to drive here in Washington.. Have a friend who lives in Arizona and has a motorhome with a toy hauler compartment that he uses for his UTV. When we are back in Nebraska (usually Memorial Day Weekend) he drives his UTV around town on the side streets. It is licensed in Arizona.. The cops don't say anything to him, but I don't think it is legal in Nebraska. That price seems a little high to me.for that old of a UTV. I've been checking into buying one to use on the forest service roads in the nearby Cascades. Plus I think it would be fun to drive around on neighborhood streets in the summer time.

A lot of towns in Nebraska passed ordinance that you can drive golf carts atvs and utvs on the streets as long as carry liability insurance

If you are concerned with the price, go to a dealer or Craigslist in your area and see what is for sale. I would find out the model number or specifications on it so your somewhat comparing apples to apples. This should give you an idea of what is available in the market.

After reading the thread I would agree that what you don't want is an ATV for what you are attempting to accomplish.

But if you ever do look at an ATV, I highly recommend that you stay with either a Honda (shaft drive) since you seem to pull things and the hills. I have Yamahas myself. The belt does tend to get smoked once in a while under severe heavy work situations.

I like the accessories options on an Arctic cat but it and Polaris would be my last choice.

Do they make Gators that are single rear axle or are they all rear tandem axle?

Good advice. Thanks. Not certain about the Gator axles

Maybe the really early gators had single rear axles. That I’m not sure.

As far as I know most of them are single rear axle UTV’s.
