OT: Bennigans Monte Cristo

Odd request, but I've been looking for a real, deep-fried Bennigans style Monte Cristo sandwiches. Not any of those diner style french toast stacked sandwiches. Any diners or locales in NJ that make them, along with the raspberry jam? It's one of those guilty pleasures I occasionally have, along with Fat Cats.

Wow, that brings back memories! I remember that sandwich, was damn good way back when. Unfortunately, like so many restaurant chains, they changed hands a number of times and severely went downhill.

The Bennigan's in Saddle Brook closed in the mid-2000's I think and then re-opened with a new owner about 10 years later. We went for the nostalgia and it was a greasy mess. Went under a year or so later and has been vacant at least 4 years now. I think the NJ MLS office is now in the location.

They have new locations opening, but none in our area. New location coming soon in Peoria, AZ, which is our gas stop for Phoenix airport.

Bennigans was awesome. The chicken finger dinner with fries as both of the sides. When you’re 19-20, wolf that down and still feel good (physically and emotionally) is a special thing.

At least 4 years probably closer to 10. Last time I was in that Bennigan's was probably 2013/2014. I grew up right there, remember when the Steak and Ale was in that parking lot too?

Yup. I remember the Steak & Ale well. I always thought it was weird nothing ever moved in after they went under. Must have been one of those long term leases. Even when Bennigan's re-opened, nothing was there. Rumors years ago was an ice cream shop that never happened.

That was my go to meal as a kid! My family went to the Bennigan's at the little Route 1/Route 18 circle all the time. Always a "special" event in those days. LOL!

I always thought bennigans better than Applebees . Yet , Applebees lasted and bennigans didn’t .
My group used to hit the bennigans near the RAC sometimes pre or post game. Now it’s brick place.

remember it very well. It is now the Midland Ale House, it is pretty good I usually pop in there every couple of months. The only issue I have with it is they have practically no lot so you have to valet your vehicle. Remember Gleason's and Ed's tavern? How about DP's or Rosie's in Garfield?
