A question for Zap or any other Essex County baseball fan.
Back in the early 70s Our Lady of the Valley had two stud pitchers who I think eventually made it to the major leagues.
I think one was Vinnie Byron. Can anyone tell me the other guys name? I've been racking my brain, the little there is to rack, but I can't think of it. Also what year they graduated.
They had a great team in 1973
Byron
Rota
Martinez
Are the only guys I remember.
I played against those guys in America Legion.
Montclair never played the Valley

I played at St. Pats. We played Valley in 74 and beat them pretty good. It was one of the few great baseball teams ever at St. Pats. We beat Union in the County finals and ended up the year ranked #2 in the state.
We had a shortstop named Joe Alvarez who went in the third round to the Yankees. Played at Johnson City, TN where his DP partner was Damaso Garcia. Joe never made it as a player but has been a minor league coach and manager for almost 40 years

In 73 we won 18 games and were hoping to be invited to the GNT. However that was the first year that the GNT became the de facto Essex County championship tournament.
The only other team we played from that area was Essex Catholic.

What city was the first Wrigley Field located?

Hint - it ain't Chicago.
Los Angeles. Unless there's another one. EDIT: That's a bit of a trick question. The Chicago ballpark predated the LA park, but the LA park was the first to be officially named "Wrigley Field".

Correct, Wrigley Field was built in 1914 but went by the name of Weeghnam Park, it was build for the Chicago Whales of the new rival Federal League, here is a photo of the inaugural game there:

But Federal League folded after just two years and the Cubs moved in, it changed the name but to Cubs Park, they wouldn't change the name to Wrigley Field until 1926, but by then William Wrigley Jr. had built a ballpark in LA in 1925 for his Cub's farm team, the PCL LA Angels and named it Wrigley Field:

Debunks the popular (and wrong) question of the only Yankee manager not to manage in Yankee Stadium

The trivia question you are referring to is who was the only manager to not win a game in Yankee Stadium (Bill Virdon, when the Yankees played at Shea). I guess the question really should be phrased differently to include "since Yankee Stadium was built in 1923..."

But can we keep these trivia questions going? I love them.

Speaking of the 1962 Mets, name the pitcher that won both ends of a double header that year, then proceeded to lose his next 19 decisions. Hint, he was also the losing pitcher in the last game ever played at the Polo Grounds.

Charley Caldwell coached Princeton football from 1945-56. He oversaw a 9-2-0 record vs. Rutgers - most ever wins by a PU coach over RU.

But Caldwell is also a part of Baseball Lore when he was briefly a pitcher on the 1925 New York Yankees. Can you guess what story he was part of?

Speaking of Mets pitchers - the men who gave up historic home runs #59, 60&61 to Roger Maris all later pitched for the Mets, who were they?

I know #61 was Tracy Stallard. I think #60 was Jack Fisher. No clue about #59.

This switch hitter was the first to achieve 100 hits from each side of the plate?
Hint: I watched him do it?

The only other guy to do it I played against in high school

The most amazing HS football player I ever saw.

I may have told you this Zap a long time friend of mine used to say in 3 years as a varsity HS pitcher he only gave up 4 HR's, 2 to a guy named Maddox, one to a guy named Zisk, and 1 to a guy named Berra (Larry). He said he could live with that

Haddix (The Kitten)
Lost his perfect after Don Hoak booted a grounder to lead off the bottom of the 13th.
After a sac bunt and an Aaron intentional walk...Joe Adcock ended the no hitter with a home run, except Aaron touched second and decided to run straight to the dugout, Adcock passed him and was ruled out, but he did touch 2nd before being called out for passing Aaron and was only awarded a double on a ball that left the ballpark...lol
Final score 1-0
Adcock really hit 337 dingers, but is only credited with 336!

Only four players hit a HR to the Polo Grounds CF bleachers, two did it on consecutive days. One did it while playing in Negro Leagues.

Out of the four, three were well known for their power while the fourth was more known for his stolen bases.

What year was the All-Star game held in a stadium that was not home to a MLB team that season? It was home to a team before and after, but that year it wasn't.

The first game in 1962.

Now for tonight's question.

Two Texas Rangers players hit back to back inside the park HR's in a 1977 Yankee Stadium game. One player had a father who did not have a Topps card made for him in the year in which he was the MVP.The second player will have you going backwards and forwards.

So the Red Sox had the Curse of the Bambino and the Cubs had the Curse of the Billy Goat.

In Nippon Professional Baseball, what is the curse of the Hanshin Tigers?

Would have to be Bump Wills and Toby Harrah

Team won championship, so fans who looked like a player were chosen to jump in the river. No one looked like American Randy Bass so they went down the street and found a Colonel Sanders statue and threw that in

Very good. The Hanshin Tigers won the 1985 Championship and Colonel Sanders put a curse on them that they would not win another championship. To date, they haven't despite recovering the statue in 2009.

It had to be 1935.I knew that the Indians played mostly in League Park, but I had thought they played at least a few in the larger stadium.
