Looking to do something with the wife and kids but $8 grand for a house in Ocean Grove for the week seemed steep, maybe because people are staying local and not flying. I told my wife to check out Oceans as we have been there before and it is nice. They said the pool is open but sometimes a two hour wait due to law limiting it to 25% capacity. We asked about the beach and they said it had eroded and there wasn't much left. Restaurants were closed. So we are trying Ocean City Maryland, never been there but someone recently said everything is open.

...and that crooked, incompetent and no doubt “woke” leadership keeps getting re-elected...like DetRiot, Baltimore, Chicago, and other assorted s***holes. New additions to this list: Seattle, Portland and Minny! But they are woke af!

A/C: moribund for years...
You've really honed the mean-spirited old coot image quite well. Your leader would be proud.

My wife and I were at Seaview about 4 years ago. Went over to hit AC and it was a disaster. Never got out of the car and went back to the resort. Can't imagine what it's like now.

Developers really need to take over and turn it into a family resort like Ocean City, MD or Myrtle Beach.
How was the Seaview? Thanks. $$$$

I go every year for the past 30 years. Stay at the casino hotels at least one week a year have never observed what I am seeing here. When neighboring states started gambling, there was
A down hill slide but things have been getting
Much better for the last 5 or 6 years. I am going
In two weeks at he Golden Nugget and Ocean resort. For years Borgata always gave me
Free rooms this year they wanted a hundred a nite
So I am going to try the golden Nugget, haven't
Been their since it was the Marina.
I used to go down every Friday in the summer to play cards. Imho GN has greatly improved since the takeover. New owner has put some money into it. Still not Vegas or even the Borgota but pretty good for around here. Have not been down since February due to Covid so cannot say what is open or how it looks today.

It was nice. It's showing it's age but we actually like that. Golf courses were nice. Bay much nicer than the Pines but that was still a fun course to play. I read Stockton sold the resort to a FL company in 2018 so hopefully they made some improvements. I would go back. We played Galloway as well.

Pre-COVID I was in AC about 100 days per year for business and pleasure.

The politicians deserve some blame but the handful of casino operators who didn’t know what they were doing and ran their properties into the ground deserve more. Specific to what you saw, CET made a mess out of Bally’s and it’s other properties. Let’s see what new ownership can do.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/presso...aee6cf70-1e26-506b-b9b5-1f632fb8c155.amp.html

Plummeting property tax revenues from the casinos have led to a very noticeable decline in police presence and public safety on the boardwalk over the last few years.

CT, PA, and DE casinos killed AC, since AC was mostly only a day trip destination, unlike Vegas. I used to go the Taj, the best poker room in AC - there's a good reason why Rounders chose the Taj for the scene where Matt Damon takes down Johnny Chan (featuring a real Taj dealer, who was pretty hot, but also a great dealer) - once or twice a month, since poker opened in AC (around 93) and I'd play from early afternoon until 3-5 am and drive home and go to work on 2 hours sleep, unless it was a weekend, when I might get a room, especially if friends went (mostly went by myself though).

But when PARX opened, that killed AC for me, since I really only went for poker and PARX is a 1.5-hour round trip, instead of a 3-hour round trip for AC. Half the people I played poker with at the Taj are now at PARX. These days I only go to AC when we do our usual trip to OC for a week or if the wife wants to visit friends/family in the area (she went to Stockton) and haven't been since COVID. Big fan of White House Subs for their cheesesteaks (subs are good, too, but I'm more partial to cheesesteaks). We also usually go to Dock's or the Knife and Fork at least once when we're in OC.

AC could have become "The Garden Spot of the Western World" had it not been for that prissy Princetonian and his Protect Adelson at all costs bill passed in 1992.

I believe it’s a Polish water ice? I know someone on the board has one in AC
Polish water ice? Is that some sort of Polish joke?

[roll]
I am of Polish descent, and I love Polish jokes. But really, "water ice?" Only in Poland.

Wasn't sure if your first question was serious or not, but yes, there's a Polish Water Ice place on the boardwalk in OCNJ. My favorite is peirogi-flavored...

Polish Water Ice is good!

there are 2 I am aware of in Ocean City Nj and one in Atlantic City.

I actively dislike ice cream but a root beer and vanilla is solid. Must get.

Also to the poster speaking of Parx.
I have gone on and off to Philadelphia Park for 20 years. You can put lipstick on a pig but Parx is a colossal ********

I have played poker from Bellagio to Borgata and many in between but on the East Coast Borgata is where it’s at. Your mileage will vary though obviously

The Borgata is nice, but the Taj was the best in AC, IMO. PARX is hideous, but it has a great poker room and it's close, which is all that matters, since I go, I play poker non-stop for as long I have clearance for, and I drive home (and their snack bar makes awesome cheesesteaks). They also have my favorite game, which isn't played too many places - the $6-$12 high/low Omaha/Stud combo (they alternate every half hour and there's a half kill to $10-$20). I get tired of no-limit Hold-em which has killed limit poker games, mostly.

You are right. I just got frustrated on everyone dumping on A/C. We have had so many good years there and my wife and I have tried to take time to volunteer down there at various times. It’s beyond frustrating and angering and sadly depressing to not see better results.

I was out of line on Parx. Maybe I lost too much there. Haha. We all love our places for what we like. And especially if they offer the games you like that is all that matters. And if you win? How can you beat it. It’s like casino home.
I love a few places in Vegas that aren’t exactly in Fodors top 5 travel guide. But I win there, eat and drink cheap and have so much fun. That’s how it should be!

I agree that the dumping on AC is way overdone, but not surprising given the tone of this board. However, it was predictable that gambling couldn't be the only thing driving tourism to AC and that when other closer locations started offering gambling, AC would decline.

I still think NJ should try to recoup that income by opening a mega casino in Edison or Woodbridge, right near either the TPK/Pkwy or TPK/287 interchanges, so it would be the closest casino for 75% of people in NNJ/CNJ. I like that better than the Meadowlands or JC options I've heard, plus, I could almost walk there, lol. AC might be hurt a bit more, but at least most of the NJ/NYC $$ would stay in NJ.

Yes I don’t get quite why people enjoy dumping on A/C and wishing for it’s demise. Do they not realize how many people rely on these jobs ? I don’t get it. Why would someone root against that almost.

On your other note, wow if you could just plop a modestly sized casino in the area you described you might be a genius! Walkable from Metropark perhaps ?

I wonder if the short term future of the casino could be local small basic place. If you can be licensed

If NJ opens a casino in the northern part of the state NY will protect itself and respond by permitting table games in its existing casinos and maybe allowing one in Manhattan or SI. NJ would end up hurting AC even more and without a net gain to show for it.

It took a few years but the smart/successful AC casino operators learned how to respond to the competition in the surrounding states by investing in the non-gambling entertainment options. The weak operators went out of business or sold their properties cheap. In AC you can stay at one property and walk or take a very short ride to another one to gamble and go to a third or fourth to eat and catch a show or maybe go to a non-casino restaurant or night spot. That can’t be done in the other states. There’s a lot more than gambling to do in AC compared to ten years ago.

People typically rent in LBI or Wildwood for the week, and make a visit to Atlantic City. Ocean City, Maryland is great too.

I have always been a huge defender and a fan of AC but after what I saw the other day I was beyond disgusted. Legitimate complaints that have nothing to do with the tone of the board

If you don’t leave the hotel after dark you are mostly safe. Does that sound like a vacation spot?

Yeah me too. We always would comped at Borgata so how could I complain. To be fair I haven’t been in the casinos since we were in Vegas until literally the day before they closed in March.

We used to use Borgata or Water Club as a hotel and drive to Ocean City for the beach day. Ironically we are leaving for a week now in Ocean City to stay. If we get a rainout one day we might go to Borgata if Uber or Lyft is still making that run.

AC was on the upswing with the summer beach concerts and the casinos all raking in $ with full houses on weekends on the floors and rooms booked

Another reason to loathe the CCP

Tried to go a few weeks ago before the casinos were open thinking it would be quiet. Was a disaster, streets littered with homeless people, drug addicts, and thugs. Everything was boarded up as well. My wife wouldn't even get out of the car, we just turned around and went home.

AC or Manhattan?

A casino in no jersey was a no brainer..duh at the Meadowlands racetrack. Christie blew it by protecting that dump in AC

You can't wonder why kids leave NJ when even supposed fans crap all over everything about the state.

Does AC have dicey areas? Yes
Does every city in America (esp ones with casinos) have dicey areas? Yes

If you're afraid to park at a garage and go into the Borgata you have other problems.

EVERY vacation spot the world over and particularly in the US is suffering right now for obvious reasons.

Before COVID AC Casinos had a big revenue increase. They finally got it to the right number of casinos.

AC riggt-sized itself with less casinos, which made them all more profitable

Sports betting has been a boon too, onsite and moreso online

AC was making a comeback before CV

Nothing like Saturday Night at the Borgata, when the FatCats come to play. Nothing on The East Coast comes close.
