OT: Athlete Endorsements

I've noticed that in many commercials, particularly those involving pro athletes, they make very explicit reference as to who they are. Example: "You're Super Bowl champion Victor Cruz." Or, "What, Nascar driver Kevin Harvick?" Why do they do this? Do athletes have it written into the endorsement deal for branding? Legal reasons? Perhaps those in the advertising industry could chime in.

I imagine its for the 90% watching who are are really stupid and need to be told they are looking at a celebrity so they will immediately go out and buy whatever they're being shilled like good consoomers.
