OT: Army worms

Are you guys having trouble with army worms? They're pretty much an epidemic here, destroying lawns almost overnight.

I called my lawn guy to see if I needed a preemptive treatment and he said they don't bother zoysia lawns, which I have, and so far, so good. But both Bermuda and fescue lawns here are being devastated.

I saw some Monday in my yard, and they did a little damage. I went out there and sprayed bifen on them and they were gone. Mowed Thursday and it appears they are history. I have centipede and st Augustine.

If they do get in there, they’ll eat and move on. Grass will come back in the next rain. They really aren’t that big of a deal.

I saw some on the back of my yard. Was going to spray the next day. Late that afternoon about 40 robins wiped them out. Haven’t seen them since.

My neighbor had a beautiful Bermuda lawn. Armyworms got in killed the Bermuda and weeds have grown back.

They got mine about a month ago, I have 3 large areas where the Bermuda is dead and hasn’t come back yet.. I overseeded those areas Friday, so we’ll see what happens

We saw army worms on neighboring properties. Checked here (obviously) for instructions. DCD (resident farmer) recommended Bifenthrin. Went to co-op, found their display, confirmed with co-op dude that the display was thrown up for clueless locals reading the internet, mixed up enough to treat my yard and my immediate neighbor’s yard, and then repeated the spraying 21 days later to account for a hatchling crop. No issues. Thanks, DCD.

I’ve lived on a 1.5 acre lot in Gluckstadt for 12 yrs and I’ve always had Army Worms once per year…until this year…as I just sprayed for the 3rd time in past 3 mths! They have been awful in 2021.

I use 38 Plus from a co-op. I go strong at 4.5 ounces per gal.
It fries their a$$es real well….

I had them about a month ago in NE Ms. hit them with Bifen and wiped them out. I had some bare spots and they've come back weeds. I normally spray my yard once or twice a year with Bifen for no other reason than to keep fire ants out. They won't build a mound for months after spraying.

Hit me HARD several weeks ago (in July). I had some nice Bermuda going and they wiped it out in one day. I sprayed Wisdom Flowable from Tractor Supply and they fell off the grass. Worked very well. But now I have a ton of weeds growing back instead of nice Bermuda spreading. All the work I did this spring and summer seems to be for naught.

I haven’t had the first one in my yard this summer. The rest of my neighborhood got hammered and I have no idea why I got spared. I haven’t sprayed or spread anything on my yard.

^This is the way. I went once a month from April to September and never saw a critter smaller than a squirrel in the yard.... Other than the few occasions my little grub worm was in the yard after I passed out in the scud.

We had them show up last week. Noticed them in a spot about 15'x15'. A flock of crows came in a went to town on them. . I haven't seen another one. I normally spray Bifen on the yard, but the crows took care of them all.
