If you've never been to Istanbul, check out the Haggia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Used to be able to gamble there. Can't now.

If you can get to the SW coast, go. Miletus for the history.

I enjoyed Olundeniz more than Fethiye for beaching.

i got a week in turkey and the 2 weeks in eastern europe
The Istanbul airport is massive. Probably biggest in the world. It is brand new after the bombing a few years ago. Istanbul is great. Lots to see and do. I went to Iznik (Nicea). Its a small farming village where the Nicene Council took place and the blue tile comes from. I also went to Ephesus in Southwest coast. Beautiful country. Plan to go back and visit more of the country.

I was in Romania (Bucharest & Braşov) last fall. Toured a few Transylvanian towns outside of Braşov and hiked the Carpathians.

Very cool country, much like NOLA to be honest. It’s got a hard side to it but a ton of culture and incredibly cheap. I’d recommend giving it a visit while in Eastern Europe!

I've never been to Europe but I have heard from numerous people (and from my research) that Eastern Europe is an extremely underrated travel destination. Some Countries like Croatia, Czech Republic, Poland, and Greece I would actually consider "Central Europe", but I'd rather spend time exploring some of those countries than get caught up in the tourist traps in Western Europe.

Like I said, I've never been but this is what I have heard. I would also like to spend some time in Romania parts of Russia. St. Petersburg seems like a cool place to visit.

Did not rent a car as we were with a group. I wouldn’t have minded doing so but I believe you have to have an international DL for some of those countries, right? Romania wouldn’t have been that difficult to drive in imo.

We’ve been to Greece 2x (mainly the islands). Crete was our favorite and I’d love to go back there.

There’s a lot left on my bucket list to see in Europe but we’ve been over there a good bit, just mainly in the western part.

You locked in to Turkey? Have you considered other destinations? I've heard good things about Equatorial Guinea ....

My Eastern/Central European countries experiences:

Budapest was nice. I was there when Al Cowlings was driving O.J. Simpson around LA in the white Ford Bronco.

I also like Latvia. I stayed in Riga and its Art Nouveau architecture is outstanding. I paid $6 to see Swan Lake (the ballet, not the messageboard) at the National Opera House.

Sigulda has Gauja National Park which is cool. I also liked Jurmala which is on the Baltic Sea.

You're right on both accounts.

Edit to add: TMBG is on my mind mostly because they're touring to promote the 30th anniversary of Flood this year. I'm kind of thinking of seeing them perform.

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam. Why they changed it I can’t say, people just liked it better that way.

A million years ago we went to the huge market place in Istanbul. Can't remember the real name of it. Bought a Turkish rug there. Couldn't find a "Made in China" tag so it may be legit.
