The Goose and the Gander. When Aerosmith broke up, the Joe Perry Project played there. No wonder they reformed.

The Arrow Lounge. My first bar, underage, didn't pay the cover, and sneaked in cans of beer because I had almost no money.

And Twisted Sister apparently played every NJ bar in 1981.

Man some of these are blasts from the past. Places my buddies and I used to go to under age. Growing up in the area we had a decent amount of friends that worked at these clubs. Wurlitzers was a weird dynamic as many have mentioned. You had the late 20's 30 something office crowd. The construction/landscaping crowd. College kids and a good amount of underage. My buddies and I had a good early summer run in Wurlitzers when we were 19-20. We were hooking up with a group of girls (late 20's early 30's) that were teachers/office workers in the area. They invited us down to Belmar to their shore house. We get there and one of my buddies 30 something year old brother is there. Apparently we were running through many of this guys workmates and friends girlfriends.

I went to Wurlitzer's a few years before my college days for a Sweet 16 or something (hard to remember exactly) but it wasn't called "Wurlitzer's" then. Then, for Senior Week (right before graduation) - as someone pointed out earlier in this thread, there were drink specials or something and I wound up "falling in love" with a girl who I had PoliSci classes with during the preceding 2 years.

It was a magical 15 minutes.

From what I've heard over the years, you had a ridiculous success rate everywhere.

I worked at The Birch Hill. Loved watching all the metal bands and making money.
We always went to Wurlitzer's with one of my bar staffs.
Mario from Wurlitzer's was a part owner. He owned Murphy Style Grill in Red Bank until a few years ago. He was a regular of mine in Red Bank.

I was peer-pressured into going to Wurlitzers exactly one time. I hated it. Hated the atmosphere, the music selections, the meat-market dynamic, the goofy dancing on the bar BS. I hated the extreme shallowness of it. It was exactly the kind of place that I would least want to go to meet a girl.

OTOH, I think a bookstore or quiet coffee shop is much more the kind of place I'd most want to meet a girl. Which has been true of me all the way back to high school. Even in my drunken "must get laid" college days.

Agreed. Went there exactly one time after turning 21. Used the place for easy access to alcohol. And being 19-20 wasn't bad hooking up with girls that weren't as broke as we were.

I don't see the Melody as having been anything like Wurlitzers. I really liked the Melody, liked a lot of the music played there, and liked the general vibe. For me, the Melody was never a meat-market, or least not purely a meat-market (insofar as a college drinking place can be "not a meat-market" at least).

Whereas I totally hated all those things at Wurlitzers and everyone that walked through the door seemed hell-bent on getting laid and nothing more.

The Melody was nothing like Wurlitzers. The best thing about the Melody was that the Roxy was across the street, and the best thing about the Roxy was that the Melody was across the street. Together, they were great. Wurlitzers was great, though, because you'd have to try real hard not to hook up there.
