Friend from high school, also my dads neighbor, was shot and killed up there yesterday meeting someone off Facebook marketplace to buy a side by side.

According to his sister, Holmes County Sheriff’s department refused to look for him after a missing person’s report was filed- the family literally had to load up from the coast and go to his last pinged location to find his body, which prompted the cops to actually get off their asses. This has brought out a lot of folks saying they’ve had terrible experiences with that department.

Apparently 5 arrest were made this morning too.

So if any of you live there, be careful and also be on the look out for his gray dodge 2500. Should have a Jackson county tag on it- (unless it’s been recovered already.)

Sounds like a sad deal,

Rule of thumb,

If you are meeting somebody, leave notes about who you are to meet, and where...include phone numbers.

Be sure to meet in a public place. Have somebody else with you, if possible.

He was ambushed. Don’t know what steps could’ve prevented that. Seeing as how that town’s population is only 200 it seems to be the perfect spot for it

Moved back in April. Sold a few things on FB and Neighborhood. Every transaction I sent names, pics of the conversations, and phone numbers to my wife. Never know.

Terrible!!!
Only thing I ever knew about West MS was a really good catfish place there called Carmacks.
You don’t ever really think of violent crimes against strangers in Holmes County.

My family’s land is between Lexington and Durant off of Highway 12 a ways. Where we’ve hunted since I was a little kid and my dad has lived there full time for close to a decade now. We’ve had the property around 30 years.

Holmes County is not only one of the poorest counties in the US, but also one of the most corrupt and crime ridden. Why anyone would choose to live there(my father included) is beyond me. A few years ago, a couple guys broke out of the jail right outside Lexington, robbed the dollar store down the road and then successfully broke BACK INTO JAIL because they had such a lucrative business model selling contraband to other prisoners.

Awful to hear this kind of thing but I can’t say I’m surprised. I don’t recommend entering the county without a gun in arm’s reach.

What on earth could HCSD had going on so important that they couldn’t go to the location to check it out? Four hour drive for the family to find his dead body laying there. I’m no lawyer nor do I know the law very well but that sounds like it could be a huge lawsuit.

In on it ??
Cover up of some sort - knew the perps ?
Corruption/money ??
I have no idea —- just speculating as to why they didn’t find the body in the 4 hours it took the family to drive up there.

If that’s gone then there’s your answer and motive.
Still, once caught, they should get life plus life in Parchman.
The death penalty would be too easy for those 17’s !!

Sorry, but I absolutely think of violence against anyone in Holmes county. It’s a rough place.

There use to be a few bars there that if you wanted to get you *** whipped, they could make it happen.
And I’m not just meaning had regular fights. I’m talking people getting cut.

Whole place was and continues to be pretty lawless.

Dang. That’s rough.

Fellas, do those kinds of deals in the Walmart parking lot in daylight.

Or the police station parking lot.

Just awful.

Of course the money is gone. Only things recovered were his body and the trailer he toted up there with him.

If he didn’t leave much info on when and where he was going, how do they know he had $20k on him?

His sister knew where he was up until 9:30 in the morning. She knew everything about the deal but started to worry when she couldn’t get a hold of him for a while after that. Then checked his location and saw it had stayed the same for way too long so she decided to contact the authorities who wouldn’t do anything.

Sorry for your loss. Anyone who lives there knows how dangerous it is and that you will get little help from LE, that goes for many counties in the delta.

I’d be willing to bet the sxs was stolen in the first place, and the thugs needed drug money.

No reason to use cash anymore for stuff like this with PayPal and Venmo around. If the seller expects cash only in a location of their choice in the middle of nowhere you should think twice...

I saw this story yesterday. Awful. It said that he knew the sellers, that's probably how he was lured to the location.

That's not the first time something like that has happened. I know in some places local law enforcement agencies encourage people meeting for these type things to do so in the law enforcement agency's parking lot.

That's all good and well, but that stuff is already recorded in messenger. So if somebody is planning on doing this, then either they just don't give a ****, or they used a fake account and think that's going to be enough to avoid detection.

Not much you can do other than meet in a public place and bring backup. Another thing to do is investigate their profile. Personally, if I can't come up with some mutual friend on facebook, I'm not dealing with them. If I was dealing with something like a side by side from out of area, I'd at least investigate their profile and make sure it's actually been active and has friends.

Flowood Police Dept has (or at least in the past did) a spot in their parking lot that you could use just for this purpose. Others should follow suit

Holmes County is the most corrupt county in the State and it isn't close. 2 months ago we had a family friend killed while riding a motorcycle. A 17 year old came around a curve on the wrong side of the road and hit him head on. The DA refused to prosecute for any crime because in her words, the kid had no intent to kill him. Would not even consider vehicular manslaughter which doesn't require intent. There were eye witnesses, but she didn't care. Just another place to avoid.

??? Maybe because you don't think about people that don't live there going to Holmes County. Otherwise, for how sparsely populated it is, it's plenty violent.

I remember a month or so ago another guy from the coast (I think) went to Jefferson parish to buy a similar bike and was shot and killed too. Don’t know if the killer was ever caught.

Certainly the smart thing to do. Can also use a fire station if parking is available.

Three people were arrested in Houston MS this week for killing a guy that responded to a car for sale on social media.

HOUSTON – Three Houston men are in custody for the Oct. 26, 2020 murder of 40-year-old Robert Cox of Cascilla, which is in Tallahatchie County.

Houston Police Chief Billy Voyles said Cox and his stepdaughter were in town to buy a 2012 Nissan Maxima from someone that they had been communicating with via social media, the step-daughter told authorities.

When Cox got out of his vehicle to look at the car, a man approached him with a gun tucked in the front of his pants. Two other men then approached from behind the house and a fight erupted. Cox pushed the gun away, but was still shot.

Always...always...meet in a very public place or police/sheriff parking lot. If the other party “can’t” or “doesn’t want to” then take that as a sign and cancel the deal. Nothing is worth your life. I PROMISE no sheriff or police department will mind you meeting up there to do that.

No Offense... But, what the hell was your friend thinking?!?!? I have no idea what a side by side goes for but there isn't a price that would make me drive 4 hours to a place that I don't know to meet people i don't know with $20,000 in cash. This is the most terrible, yet predictable outcome I have ever heard. Again, I hate to speak ill of the dead but this is one of the dumbest exchanges I have ever seen. A simple google search of Holmes County/Durant would have told ANYONE that you do not go there for ANY reason if it is not life or death important....
