OT: Anyone have any experience with soda makers

[NTDawg]

my wife loves sparkling water, LaCroix, so I was thinking about getting her a soda machine for Christmas but I don't know anything about them.

Thanks in advance for any help.

We got one as a door prize or something a couple years back. I did the math and it is pretty much a wash with buying cheap cans of soda.

Cheap soda? cokes? or these seltzer waters, they aren't too cheap. We both sitting here drinking a Topo Chico. Probably our favorite but it ain't cheap.

I have a SodaStream that is several years old. I used to drink from it a lot, but then I got to figuring out the real costs. Sure they will sell you the hardware cheap but get you on their proprietary syrups. It is also a hassle to use those syrups -- you have to pour the syrup in REAL slow in order to not get it to fizz over and make everything sticky. Plus even with all of that you only get one liter at a time.

As for plain soda water I am not sure how that would work. It would be best to compare the per ounce cost including the gas cartridges and special bottles (they are thicker than normal drink bottles and the necks are larger, so they also have a monopoly on that.

Kroger. Fizz and Co. they make a coke and Dr Pepper. Both are damn good.

My guess is it'll be like the beer making kit I got for Christmas a couple of years ago. Fun and interesting at first, but then realized it's a pain in the ***, the beer isn't really any better than what I can buy, and not all that much cheaper. Used the hell out of that kit the first year, haven't touched it since.

We have a Soda Stream that my kids wanted a couple years back. We don’t use it for soda anymore, but my wife bought some of the 1/2 liter bottles and makes sparkling water for herself everyday...
