Imagine a world in which Pisgah and Swervin' were forced to just sit and eat dinner with each once a week. I wish we all got those opportunities more. It might help get us understand why we're all the way we are. Most disagreements are a matter of perspective. No one wants to feel afraid or cheated or hopeless. It's a start to understand why others feel these emotions.

I believe we are on opposite sides of the political spectrum, but I believe you and I would get along very well. Must be that Duke education, haha.

I believe most of the problem is that Black people MUST know White (American) culture to even exist in America, White people do not have to experience Black culture or Black people if they do not choose so. I know White people better than they know themselves, because my father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather so on and so on all knew how to operate in America because being yourself out of place could get you killed.

This is the reason you have two cultures in one, Black people act and talk differently when around one another, the assimilated ones anyway.

Growing up in an area that was 95% or more black, and me being mostly white, I don't need you to explain anything to me about hate - I've felt it myself, daily, and have the fighting experience and scars to prove it.
Depends...
If you're using your experience as an excuse not to listen to others... or as an anecdote that invalidates the average experience... or as something that gives you a pass on whatever else you might say in these discussions, then it may be that your experience actually blinds you to the experiences of others.

You forgot to mention that good cops are still being murdered by bad people and that without the police we, black and white, would all be in grave danger. The number of murders of innocent people by the police is a fraction of a percent of all murders and while regrettable is not nearly as widespread a phenomenon as the media and Black Lives Matter would like us to believe.
Murder is bad regardless, but it's kind of expected to some degree when we're talking about gangs and drugs and the like. For the very people we entrust with keeping us safe to commit murder is a bit more of a violation of the social contract.
When people are cynical and counter-attack over every allegation of police brutality, I don't think they have an actual bead on how often it occurs or even an interest. They seem more concerned w/ preserving the establishment as is than looking for any truth or justice or reform.

Bull hockey! But go ahead and pat yourself on the back. Your facts are unsourced and usually wrong or are based on revisionist history or are presented out of context because you are not capable of debating honestly. By the way, having a Duke education may make you educated but it does not make you smart.
On the bold I added, while education alone does not make one smart, use enough responses like the one you have below and it doesn't really matter how smart the other guy is; you've disqualified yourself from being considered credible by engaging like that.
Wah, wah, wah.

I was a diehard liberal idealist in college. I had some kids and navigated a Federal job and now private industry. Though I remain a social issue liberal (I am a scientist), I am certainly more central in terms of economy and world politics. I'm not sure if there exists a direct opposite of what I've become. I am damn sure we'd get along swimmingly, dbav. I can appreciate anyone with an open mind whom cares for his fellow man. You fit the bill, my Duke brother.

I think this is a nice place to end it. Plenty kept this discussion going and cordial. Many did not. But it went on further than I expected for the most part.
