He’s got a good 5 years, especially w his length. His repaired back going bad again is the only thing that will prevent him from winning. He was thisclose from winning this weekend.

He's had several back operations. If you knew anything about disk surgery and the torque pressure on the lumbar region, you would know how silly guaranteeing him five years at that level. (And his right knee too). He's playing great right now; you're a fan; enjoy the ride. He's playing competitive golf again. There were several other much younger guys that were "this close" too. BTW, He's ranked 26th in the world right now.

Other than Koepka all those younger guys finished behind Tiger. For the last 2 majors how many of those younger guys finished in the top 6 twice?
Sure he’s ranked 26 now, only because he slowly rounded into form.
Now that he is in form, he’s better than most everybody. Right now Tiger is top 5.

But he’s not... he’s 26th. That’s the way it works. He came in tied for 31st two weeks ago at the WCG behind all those young guys (and a bunch of old guys). That doesn’t count? He missed the Cut at the US Open. That doesn’t count?

It’s respect for his game, and for being one of the greatest who’s ever played the game, who’s comeback from physical barriers and breakdowns physical and mental , is showing the sporting world one of the most compelling and dramatic comebacks in decades. This story is why viewership is Way up and golfers and pundits are gushing over what is unfolding right before their eyes in real time.

As someone who has followed sports very closely for almost 55 years, the dramatic , compelling stories that come around once every 25 years ago, draw me in. Maybe it’s because I’ve written and reported for various media outlets over the years, but I have an appreciation for the story of the aging superstar trying to grasp his fading stardom before its too late.

I thought the Michael Phelps story at last summer Olympics was similar. Muhammad Ali and Roberto Duran at the end of their careers as well.
Woods, IMO, still has about 5 years left to win majors. The career descent of the professional golfer is much slower than of a boxer.

Tiger's 5-1 odds by London bookmakers to win a major next year. Here's a list of players who have better odds:

DJ, Spieth, Koepka, McIlroy.Top five golfer, indeed.
I think he's going to win one of the WGC events. He busted through his ceiling on Sunday. He believes now and that's all that really matters in golf.

The low odds could very well be they know there will be a ton of money on Tiger just because he's Tiger. Kind of like odds on horses with Irish names at MP.

I wonder which poster has the most posts in this thread.
Its a unreadable tie between Cali and chase. One hates Tiger the other defends him like its 2000. Before chase comments on how boring and impersonal Koepka is he was the most sane of the two. But after his rant about Koepka lacking charisma he went of the rails. His complaints describe Tiger to a tee. The biggest, impersonal person on the tour during his run.
Next year the two of them can start their own thread. The rest of us can post in a thread about reality and facts.

Oh go stuff it, White Bus. Golf feeds off the energy and emotion of its stars. From Vardon to Hagan to Jones, to Nelson, Snead and Hogan, to Arnie and Jack, Trevino, Miller, Watson, Player, the Shark,Faldo Phil, Tiger, McElroy, Spieth...I mean, Faldo was the flattest them all and even he reached out and bear hugged the Shark on the 18th at Augusta after the latters epic collapse in '96.

And Tiger playing without emotion? Come one. Go watch the video above.

I'm not the only one noticing this stuff...from a senior editor at golf digest:

"Brooks likes to say he doesn’t watch golf and isn’t a “golf nerd,” but he’s offended when the golf nerds fail to rally around him. As fans, we want to see emotion — really, any indication that a player cares will do. It’s endearing. Today’s bloodless finish on 18 is a perfect example of that disconnect. Brooks claimed that by putting before Adam Scott (and then tapping in to win!), he was just trying to get out of Scott’s way, but c’mon, man! You’re about to win your third major! Mark your ball so you can have your winning moment! Bask in the glory! Give the people a reason to cheer! It ended up being a supremely mundane and awkward finish to what had been a rip-roaring back nine otherwise.

Imagine if Tiger ever said this to the NY POst like Koepka did after his British Open Presser to start the week?

“If I could not come in here, I wouldn’t,” Koepka said, referring to the media center. “I’m not going to kiss any *** — kiss anybody in the media’s *** like a lot of people do. I’m going to stick to what I do. I’m going to do my thing and go about it the way I do. I’m not in it for attention. I’m not in it for anything other than to win.”

Just because you don't know what's going on doesn't mean it isn't going on.

Dude, you're a Tiger super-fan...we get it. But please don't detract from what Koepka has done and that it's not good for golf. You look silly.

And it was widely known and accepted how big a dick Tiger was with the other pro's. How often do you see him signing autographs?

I swear the Tiger love fest on this board - and everywhere else - is scary. Respect the guys game, no question whatsoever, but, once again, it’s been 10 ****ing years since he’s won a major. TEN!!!

...And now we have to listen to this crap for another eight months? Dear Lord get me a drink ha ha Ha!

I think you're overreacting. Most people on here are simply defending Tiger from some overzealous Tiger-haters. I've never rooted for Tiger, but I know how good he's been and can still be, if he's healthy. He will win another major if he remains healthy. Given all he's been through (some of his own making) and his new-found humility and friendlier persona, this week was the first time I ever rooted for Tiger to win anything.

Perhaps BK is taking the right approach here. What do you want him to do after being upstaged by Tiger, act all over zealous about the win? That would just make him look silly. He's all business and just out to win, not to market or endear himself. I can respect that. If he keeps winning and dominates, he will eventually be revered and marketed, just like Tiger.

All are different; if everyone wore their heart on their sleeve, it would be boring. Kevin Na won a few weeks back. He has personality, but no one really cared much, because he's not a dominant player. So you can see what BK is striving for. He has as good of a chance to be the next No. 1 as anyone and i don't think it would be bad for golf if he dominated for a while. Let the Speith fans root for Jordan to upset the stoic brute BK. Unless Woods is in the mix, then that is the only story.

I think this is an interesting, thoughtful, counter take on Koepka...as opposed to the toddler level/ cry baby responses that followed my initial criticism of this "Stoic Brute." I do like that description. Captures all of it in two words.

Barring injury, Koepka will be number one for a long time. He's the best to come along since Tiger.

In the end, there's just too much money in trying just a little bit. Someone, an agent of some kind, his parents...will get a hold of the young man and speak some sense to him. Warring with the media, telling people you'd rather play baseball than "boring" golf, whining that you're overlooked and using it as a chip on the shoulder for drive...are the musings of a guy about to pass up on $100 million or more without a complete reversal of direction.

I suspect we'll see Brooksie start kissing some ***, real soon. He may be a born di*k but I don't think he's stupid.

Expect a full change of direction by Ryder Cup time. His first move will be mending fences with Shipnuk, the golf writer he attempted to have thrown out of his US Open presser, like it was some kind of nightclub he owned. Dear me.

Off the Winged Foot shortly for some lunch and golf. Had a 76 yesterday. Took down out a young, met open qualifier and his professional instructor...hitting it well, again.

Enjoy.

It’s obvious what you’re trying to do...we get it. It’s just not correct. The thing that impresses me about Koepka is that he plays his best golf on Saturday and Sunday and has used the media snubs as motivation. Since you claim to be such a great golfer, you should understand this.

At 28, he will continue to grow and mature but the fact is his peers respect him already which was the complete opposite of Woods when he was his age.

Tiger needed to be humbled both personally and professionally before realizing he needed to change and grow up. To be honest, I think a lot of his bad behavior was because of the way his father brought him up.

I don’t know about him being number one for a long time. Johnson looks unbeatable at times. Same for Rory and Spieth and JT. It’s the consistency that none of them have which is what made/makesTiger so great.

I’m not sure you are making your point here. Tiger more or less has said nothing his whole career by giving bland responses and attitude to the press. He only spoke to certain members of the press (and was considered a dick). However he was all about winning and backed up his game. The press loves him because they want to know him (and he was a great player). Cant see why you have a problem with Koepka. He just wants to win. Some people just don’t like the attention. I prefer those kind of people

By coincidence, Sandy Koufax and Fat Jack Fisher are both members of our club. Even today, Sandy is a very private person that avoids every single bit of attention, however it is uber competitive even at 81. Jack, is affable, very open about telling old baseball stories and also very competitive. They are friends and Jack will be the first to tell you how Sandy internalizes everything in his life to drive him.

Agree with this. I really don't think anyone is going to dominate like Tiger did, for many years to come, as I think the current crop aren't quite as good as Tiger was in his prime, meaning they're very competitive with each other and I could see a bunch of the guys in their 20s and early 30s, now, winning 3-6 majors and maybe even 7-8 for a few, but nobody threatening 10. Of course, I could be wrong.

And with regard to personalities, I can't say I'm a huge fan of any of the current crop (DJ, JT, Spieth, Keopka, Rory, Rose, Day, etc.) - I don't dislike any of them, but none of them looks to be a replacement for Phil, for me, as a fan.

I agree with your assessment. The young guys are a very talented collection of golfers but no one from that group has separated themselves from the others for an extended period of time. Koepka is on the verge of that, but I thought Spieth was there two years ago.

Of the group, I’m an admitted Spieth fan given his family connections to the area. Both parents were great athletes and he has a great respect for the game.

Then why aren't you a Tiger fan?

I have no problem with Koepka, I just think he's the equivalent of, in tennis say, if a giant serbian player, with a 145 mph serve, took over the game. Is that good for the game? A silent, emotionless brute playing without flair? Or is it better for the game if it's dominate player is a Federer or a Spieth? Guys with style, charm and flair?

Tiger made up for his crappy attitude with a charismatic style that drew people into the game. Koepka will never do that and he has the potential to turn people from the game if he starts dominating, which I think he will.

That's a prediction. We'll see how it plays out. Maybe I'm wrong...maybe there is more flair there than I'm giving him credit for. Maybe, he comes around and starts to get that being the face of the game comes with responsibilities and starts trying to live up to it. Maybe he doesn't dominate from here. We'll see.

You're so disingenuous in your posting...you have "no problem with Koepka" after eviscerating him in previous posts and linking a whining reporters column.

At least you finally admit Tiger has a crappy attitude. His popularity was a result of his dominant play and flair for the dramatic shot during his heyday in addition to his skin color (he has never been a charismatic speaker). It was a great story to have a talented minority player putting up great numbers in a historically white, country club landscape. I also think a lot of people were banking on Tiger bringing a wave of new golfers into the fold which never happen (see the over-building of courses 20 years ago and how many have closed since - combination of Tiger over-estimation, financial crisis and a sport that doesn't resonate as much with Millennial's). HIs benefit to golf clearly has been TV ratings and advertising and that's still true.

I'm a golf purist and I appreciate guys that have a complete game, get better under pressure and show the respect for the game.

I'm planning on taking my kids this week if you have a few extras.
