OT: Annual Tiger Woods Comeback Thread

What did we see today?
Lowest Sunday major score of his career: 64
196 (66-66-64) over last 3 rounds; his lowest score across 54 holes of a major in his career by 4 shots.
And...as gutty a performance as you will ever see. The guy had nothing with the driver, didn't hit a fairway on the front and somehow went around in 10 putts! Hit it off a cart path on the ninth, bending it around a corner and then makes the putt for his fourth birdie on the front, to turn at -11.
How that ball hung on the lip of 11 was bad luck. The lip out for par, later was a tad too hard but easily could have fallen. But along the way, an array of jaw dropping iron plays and enormous putt after putt after putt...big baller putts.
His issue today was Koepka. The dude is a solid rock of emotional fortitude under intense Sunday Major heat. Tiger past everyone in front of him but couldn't catch BK. Hats off to BK, it was his to lose and he didn't.
Tiger completed his comeback today. He found a way to once again access that part of himself where the true greatness lives...it was there all along and Boy was it electric to get to see it one more time, again.
Going to be a fun ride from here. He's back. Comeback complete, mission accomplished.

i missed it. Was at the beach with the kids in Lavallette. Glad to see Mr. I Like Beer win another Major. He is so much better than DJ. Love how the haters are still trying to defend their position. I agree that not many golfers have won in their 40s but not many golfers look like Tiger does in his 40s. Only thing that will prevent him from winning is his back.
Young team. Team sport. Great leader. 8-5 in singles matches and a record 45 matches total. Still can play great. Should be his last. But you can not leave off his experience.
Still great. Been coming here for 10 years. Lava Java and Playa Bowl are great additions. Almost bought a house here but lost a bidding war.
Lived on Ortley Ave. My youngest sister now has a house on Bay Boulevard. Rarely go back in the summer as I hate the summer traffic through Bay Head. My best friend lives in Manasquan so if I need a summer shore fix I head there, despite the fact that @knightfan7 lives there too [winking]

Well said. Exactly what many of us have been saying: a healthy Tiger will be a top 5 player again and will win some tournaments and maybe a major - none of us ever said we'd see Tiger dominate again. And Cali, in particular, said he wouldn't even compete again, especially against the big boys. ROFLMAO.
You really should learn when to just STFU.
And that is sad. There used to be an expression that “no one remembers who came in 2nd”. I think the media is p*ssing off these young stars like Koepka. Every major it will one of them on top. I was so happy Koepka tapped in first. He made a statement he is there for wins, not the media.
20 years ago I played a pro-am at Sleepy Hollow and was partnered with a pro named Jeff something. can't for the life of me remember his last name. Didn't recognize it then, either. But, as he said, he was one of those guys on the tour who never won - but every single week he was in the money. 15th, 20th, 25th. He said he never got name recognition, but he did make +500k a year to play golf, and that was just fine with him. Nice guy.
Wasn’t it jeff Maggert? He was a solid pro and what you described. Those guys make a nice living.
Maggert doesn't ring a bell. I remember his name being multi-syllables and possibly starting with an "s" or "f"...

If it wasn’t for Tiger the young guys would be playing for a fraction of the purses they currently get and it’s all because of Tiger. And they know it.
Plus the young guys , including Koepka, like Tiger so much there are now about 150 of them living by or near his home in Jupiter . They all often hang out at his restaurant The Woods on the water in Jupiter. A very nice place for those visiting the area.

I assume it wasn't Jeff Sluman, who did win several tournaments and one major in 1988 (PGA). He was kind of a steady/consistent type golfer. Multi-syllables and begins with S...
Koepka has a PR problem. When his name was announced on 18, with the win in the bag, the reaction could not have been less enthusiastic.
Golf has its antagonist. They tried to make it Patrick Reed but he's just too likable, in the end. Little chubby guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve.
Koepka is easy to dislike. Emotionless, robot... seemingly arrogant guy with little to say. It would be bad for golf if he ends up being the player of the generation. No charisma, no excitement, just reaction-less Brooks, bombing and gouging in his too tight shirt. What time does the baseball game start?
You must be a professional wrestling fan. Koepka is easy to dislike??? Are you f-ing kidding me? I was at Shinnecock on the 18th green when he won....the game is fine with him if he ends up continuing to be as dominant.
Tiger brings a lot of attention (crowds, money and eyeballs) to watch, but without him the game will be fine.

And ratings were up 70% with Tiger this year vs. last year. So, yeah, the game will go on without him but don't be surprised to see purses and endorsement money decline with a near halving of the audience.

No kidding. Every post I've made recognizes the eyeballs and money Tiger contributes by bringing in the casual golf fan that doesn't normally watch or tune-in.
And if we're are talking about being a "di*k", most pros will tell you that Tiger has held that crown for the past 20 years.
Couldn't disagree more with most of what you say. Dude has plenty of charisma and plenty of great things to say. He spoke for nearly an hour in his press conference, doesn't come off arrogant at all.
His biggest problem is that nobody knows him as he started playing in Europe and has only 1 non major victory in the US.
He is very marketable with his good looks and powerful drives.
As for his being emotionless I don't get where that is a knock on him. What do you want more a rah-rah guy who pees his pants when they hear the Tiger roars. This guy didnt flinch at all and shoots a great round
Zero charisma, WB. His gallery was 1/10th of the size of the guy in front of him. After four days of extra-ordinary golf, the muted reaction to his arrival on 18 tells you everything you need to know. His personality is flat and bad for golf.

Tiger always has a bigger gallery but the tour did fine for the last several years while he was MIA.
No one had a gallery any bigger after Tiger. No one was following Phil, Thomas, Speith. People were there to see Tiger. The muted arrival was the result of most of the fans leaving after giving Tiger a victory parade as he was going to the scoring tent for finishing 2 strokes back.
Tiger plays with a contagious passion. Spieth does too. So does Phil. Watson, Jack...Koepka is dull, subdued, almost like he's anesthetized. He'll never get the cheers, the adulation. He's just a bad personality for golf.
Like I said earlier, I was standing on the 18th green on Sunday when Brooks won the U.S. Open. (BTW, Tiger had missed the cut...bigly)....You have no idea what you are talking about.

I seemed to nail this Tiger Woods comeback pretty well. You as recently as Saturday were referring to him as a 30'ish player. Who do you think among that group up there is capable of his Sunday performance? Kuchar? Kyle Stanley?
And who goes to a golf tournament for four days? I'll visit Shinnecock in September for the fourth time in a year...as a player. Golf's best viewed on TV. But what's the point, you were there and what? People cheered when he duck hooked it left into the stands on his way up 18? Did he at least have the courtesy of raising his arms in the air and ACTING like he cared? Or did he putt out before his playing partner, tip his cap to the crowd, give his Mom a cold hug and go put the golf media to sleep for an hour, like he did yesterday?
