asked this: In the southern term "meat and three" establishment, what does the three stand for.

Never heard of a meat and three. Maybe I'm out of touch here in Texas, anybody familiar with this?

Around here, it's understood to be "meat and three vegetables". I'd never heard the term either until I moved here.

I’m from the coast, and I’ve heard it referred to as both a “blue plate lunch” and also a meat and three. To echo other posters, “for my three vegetables, I’ll take the macaroni and cheese, cornbread dressing, and banana pudding.”

Get it all the time in Dallas. Mamas Daughters Diner. Pretty good.

Been to Mama's Daughter's Diner many times but don't remember seeing the term "meat & three" on the menu. But I will defer to you because I don't normally go for the plates because their club sandwich or cheeseburger is to die for.

Yep. It’s somewhat common— but more often I’ve seen it called by blue plate here.

Tuesdays they have sausage and sour kraut and on Thursdays they have Beef tips and rice. Both killer. Never tried the club though.

North MS resident here... I had no idea this wasn't commonly known throughout the entire southeast. You can even get a meat & 3 at gas stations here.

I had no idea that "meat and three" wasn't a common term either. I've known of it for years and to me it's much more common than 'blue plate'. Very common even in Dallas when I lived there in the 90's and certainly here in Mid-Tenn.

you have probably ate it. Lunch special at Starkville Cafe. For some reason it’s not called a meat and three in MS anywhere I know of.

Speaking of "Meat & 3" the "Stagger In" (original District Cafe for all you older dudes like me) had been doing them for awhile and it was good, and cheap. They just went out of business though, had a sale and got rid of at least some of the fixtures. Hated to hear it........Its a great location so someone will open it back up soon, you would think, but maybe not now in these crazy times. Opening a restaurant anytime anywhere isn't easy.

Lived in Mississippi my whole life and I've never heard the term "meat and three". Not once.

Blue plate or just plate lunch is more common here, although meat and three is used sometimes. It is much more common in B'ham, I regularly hear "meat and three" advertised on WJOX.
