There could be hope coming for the Mets:Madoff is asking Trump for clemency.Maybe he'll rat out the Wilpons,a NYC Real Estate rival of the Trumps.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the Bordick trade, it just didn't work out. In 2000, Mets were all in to win, and needed a SS to replace the injured Ordonez. Bordick was an all star that very year with Baltimore! Plus it's not like Mora (28 years old at the time) was some great prospect. He didn't blossom until his 30's. Who knew?

But on the other hand... I totally agree about Kazmir/Zambrano. That was a disaster. This may be hard to believe, but in 2004 the Mets organization was dysfunctional! They had a core of veterans (Leiter, Glavine, Franco, Piazza) who had free access to the Wilpons. These veterans convinced the Wilpons that the team was ready to win now, and needed one more starting pitcher to put them over the hump. (EDIT: Actually, two more starting pitchers, they also acquired Kris Benson.) They were of course not close to being right. And unlike Mora, everyone knew Kazmir was a top prospect and was quite likely to hit it big.

My point is that you can't just evaluate results. You have to evaluate the process and rationale at the time. The Bordick trade was sound. The Zambrano trade was not.
Funny thing about the Kazmir trade I just learned. It could have been remembered fondly as a good trade for the Mets. Or at minimum, a trade that benefited both sides.

Why? Because along with Zambrano, Tampa Bay threw in a mid-level infield prospect by the name of Jose Bautista.

Problem is, that very day the Mets included Bautista in the trade in which they acquired Kris Benson.

Bautista was a nothing prospect at the time. No one even realized we traded him until he had that first big year.

Can someone answer these few questions concerning trades?

1) Why must the Mets make a trade key player for the sake of trading due to the deadline (July 31)? What signal do you send to players like McNeil, Alonso, Rosario, or Davis if you're trading away another young talent? Is this just the herd mentality?

2) Why would you trade a younger player (Thor-mid 20s) for younger unproven talent? Why not trade Vargas (36 y/o) for bullpen help?

3) Does it make sense to trade one of your top 3 starting pitchers if you don't have a solid plan to replace any of them before the start of next season?

My thoughts on the questions above:

If the Mets are a win-now team or close to winning, then I would avoid trading away core players, especially those who you have control over for a few more years like Thor. Give Wheeler a reasonable contract offer and continue to build around your core three pitchers and young everyday talent.

I feel all this talk about trading Thor or Wheeler is hard-wired into the pundits. Just because the trade deadline is near and you're not in the playoff hunt doesn't mean trade away valuable talent to collect minor league talent that is even further away from winning. When you look at the Mets, they are not several years away from contending. Address the bullpen problems and find a centerfielder and they are right there.

I'm from the camp of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The Mets problem is the bullpen, and unless one of the top starting pitchers yield help in that area, I say no to trading them. Also, if you don't have a plan to replace one of those pitchers with someone equal to or better before next season, F that. It has to be a complete plan to keep the starting pitching strong while addressing the bullpen.

Syndergaard is almost average this year. I’m sure if an organization that knew what they were doing got him, he’d be dominant. He won’t be that here. However, they should only trade him if they got an exceptional return. No one in the Mets organization is capable of knowing what that is. I could see them trading him to the Tigers for Miguel Cabrera and then playing Frazier over Cabrera. They need to sit tight on this one.

You always put out feelers...no one has said they are hard shopping Thor or any young player.
Wheeler is a FA next year, if he was healthy, it would make sense if they got a good haul in return but not so much now.
Vargas and Frazier seem the most likely to go and would make sense but we aren’t getting a top prospect for either of them..:

With deGrom- I am always amazed how many of his starts have been 1 run or less. Regardless of his record, it seems to be a stat I have never seen anyone even come close to. Over 150 starts and almost half have been 1 run or less.

Why would an AL team trade for NS? 4.33 era in the NL means 5+ in the AL. Not worth it.

So why only 1 batter for Diaz?

I know Met's have been quick with relievers recently, pulling Famillia and Wilson after coming in and giving up back to back walks without recording an out, is that what this was?

This has been an off year for NS...I am sure you have seen his career numbers and his stuff is nasty and hard and it is not a walk year.
Met's aren't trading him but teams would be falling over each other to get him if they were moving him.

Noah is still a top 20 SP this year even in his "off" year. I really hate this team when we can't sign our stars to long term deals and look to unload them at 26 because but yet we traded for 36 year old Cano. A disaster.

The Mets control Thor for another two years, so why are you trying to trade him (in his prime) to get even younger unproven talent? What type of message are you sending to the rest of the team especially the young guys like McNeil, Alonso, and Rosario? Correct the issue with the bullpen and move certain everyday players like Frazier, Largas, and find a centerfielder. Then again, I'm not sure the Mets are trading Thor as much as the media is trying to create interesting stories because they don't have any real information on what's going on with the front office.

I don't understand it either why the Mets have trouble signing their stars to long term deals? Thor has been with the Mets for several years and started to come into his own, but the Mets aren't willing to pay him. Meanwhile, guys like Cano, Frazier, Lowrie, Vargas get paid... WTF. For once I like to see the Mets move Largas, Frazier, Vargas,d Lowrie to other teams and have the other team eat some of those contracts. Next, have some of Cano's money deferred like Booby Bonilla just so the Mets have some relief to deal with the current players' contracts. Another move would be to get Cespedes to retire (injury) to free up even more money.

FWIW, which could be nothing, BVW had his top two lieutenants (Baird and Minaya) scouting Atlanta's AA and AAA games last night.

Great so we can face Thor 4 or 5 times a year for the next two years at least. They are just compounding the errors. Keep Thor, Jake and Vargas. Sign or qualify Wheels. Matz is never going to be more than a .500 pitcher so I don't care if he stays or goes. Keep the pitching intact. In the off season sign bull pen help. Make Davis your 3B next season with McNeill in right and Conforto in center if Ces comes back to play left. If Ces is done, get a CF in FA and if you have to trade anyone trade Smith but wait till the off season. His value may be higher then to a team looking for 1b help and he is blocked here anyway. JL can be your super sub. Next year your lineup would be as follows:

1b Alonso
2b Cano (as if we didn't know)
ss Rosario (who is young enough to continue to develop)
3b Davis (potential to develop into a 25hr guy)
LF Ces (if healthy)
CF Conforto
RF McNeil
C Ramos

Not a great team defensively I admit but they should be able to score runs. Pitching wise you have Jake, Thor, Vargas, and Kaye. Lugo or Wheels for the last spot. Diaz is the closer and every other bull pen spot open. If this team had only blown half of the saves they have this year they would be in the wildcard hunt. The talent exists, it all falls on the bullpen.

Maybe a better suggestion Is to trade Conforto. Every top team needs at least one corner OF who is a star player.

Per Buster Olney:

Rival evaluators say that they fully believe the Mets are intent on dealing Noah Syndergaard before the trade deadline. "It's beyond listening", said one. "They want to move him".

Mets reportedly have told Twins that the Thor price tag is their top two prospects, who are rated #7 and 11 overall.

Best case scenario is Wheeler pitches 7 shutout innings tonight and we get some value for him (because I know it is unthinkable that the Coupons will sign him in the off-season). Trading Thor is a no-go for me especially with these jokers.

Au contraire! According to current reports, which of course could change tomorrow, it is quite possible that the Mets will trade Thor and re-sign Wheeler. A 180 degree change from a week ago.

Trading Thor and the Mets still don't address the bullpen issue or certain fielding positions on the big league level. BVW will still claim the Mets are all in to win, yet they will be further out of contention going into next year. :chairshot:

I just don’t understand this team. No matter who is pitching, other than deGrom, if we are leading in the game, we are almost guaranteed to give up runs.

Wheeler gets a W in his final start?

Maybe not. NY Post reporting that Mets are "definitely" trading Thor. I don't see them trading both. But who knows.

A few days ago, I would have thought no way with Noah and even now, it may be the media trying to make some headline news before it happens.
Seems strange that in the stories about NS, they are also now adding in Diaz as trade as well.
Now, if this was any other team, I would say both were 100% the media trying to make news. But, we are the Met's. We have some useful vets at the end of contracts that could help contenders, Frazier, Vargas. We have a SP who is a free agent next year and may have shown last night that he is healthy. We have a young player who is completely blocked at his position but has proven to be a hitter at this level and a superior fielder at the position he is blocked at.
All would be the guys any other team would be moving and get what ever the F they can get for them. Hell, that is how we got NS in the first place. He was a throw in on a trade.
But the hottest rumors are surrounding two young guys that may be having off years but have a solid history and could have their best in front of them plus both under control for at least 2 and more years.
And with both of these guys, we have NO ONE that can currently fill their spots on the team. But we are the Met's FML

MLB Pipeline has issued its midseason update to its Prospects Report. The Mets Top 30 is linked. http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2019?list=nym

Andres Gimenez, who has been struggling at AA, drops to #3. Not a good sign. Fellow SS Ronny Mauricio replaces him in the top spot. Draftees Brett Baty, Matthew Allan, Josh Wolf, and Jake Magnum enter at #2, 5, 11, and 26. Catcher Francisco Alvarez, who was born after the Twin Towers came down (yes, time does fly), is an interesting prospect at #7.

Other than Anthony Kay at #4, who is currently struggling at AAA, there is no immediate help on the horizon. Keep an eye though on #18 Ryley Gilliam, a 2018 draftee who has already made it to AAA. Also another 2018 draftee, #13 Kevin Smith in AA.

Mets have no prospects in the MLB Top 80. They used to, but that was then and this is now. Perhaps by Wednesday they will again.

Also keep in mind that Jeff McNeil never made any of these lists. You never know.
