Could this stretch of poor pitching be tied to Calloway's style of what and how the staff should approach pitching? For the most part, the staff has gotten worse under Calloway.

Vargas. His numbers are decent because we are limiting him to opposing lineups going only 2 times through. It kills our bullpen every 5th day though.

Vargas catches a lot of hell here but truthfully outside of the outing where he didn't get out of the 1st inning he's been pitching as well as deGrom or Syndegaard. Just not as quite as deep into games. 4 or 5 innings as opposed to 6.

Yes but he was signed to be an innings eater. He has not pitched terribly but he needs to at least go six each start.
If he's the inning eater, he must not be hungry
If he is an innings eater, the Sandy did not realize Vargas was an anorexic.
Signing him for one year and hoping for the best is fine. Signing him for 3 years/$30 million wasn't a smart move. Especially as most fans hated him at the end of his last time in NYC.
He is good with placement and pitch selection. A little like Bartolo Colon- no overpowering fastball.

Calloway is a d*ck for leaving him for two innings. So he got the first five outs, what has he done to earn pitching two straight innings? If the Mets don't finish near the top or make the playoffs, it's all on Calloway for holding this team back with one wrong move after another.
Why didn't the Mets fire Calloway at the end of the season when there was a lot of talk about him not being the right manager for this team?:chairshot:
i understand but that’s why you don’t waste Diaz in a rout the other day otherwise he would have been available today except to torture everyone with familia again. Felt bad for familia having to get 2 innings but he should have been taken out prior. Calloway should be fired. He’s awful
The time to turn off baseball has come earlier this year. Oh well. Time to find something else to do this summer.
The one thing Callaway should be good at (ie pitching staff) has regressed tremendously in his tenure. The star pitchers are sucking it up (Thor, deGrom). Relievers are still garbage. What is the reason to keep this guy.

This type of luck does not work with good teams. Unless there is a managerial and pitching coach change, we are in for yet another long season and watching peak years of star pitchers wasted.

Clutch pitching??? Did you watch the 9th inning? Blowing a 2 run lead in the 9th inning is not clutch pitching. We play the Dodgers, brewers, etc a game like this and no chance we win that game.
Well it's been proven many times that pitching isn't all about throwing the ball 97 miles per hour. If it were Noah Syndegaard wouldn't be looking like a batting practice pitcher.
Let's start with pulling Vargas after the home run. Even Keef said that Vargas was pitching well, why take him out in that spot for Gsellman? What did that do? It strained an already strained bullpen. Pushed Familia to pitch an extra couple of outs more than he is used to and almost cost the Mets the game.
