Adding in this question. Why do they insist Nido is not deGrom’s personal C? And why in hell is he? He hasn’t made him better and we need any bat we can find why this guy is pitching.

I think deGrom's results are much better with Nido vs. Ramos.

7. I have no doubt the Wilpons will spend money contrary to the myth that's out there. The question becomes do the Mets overspend like the Familia mistake or find value as they did with Hechavarria

The Wilpons don't spend, that's not a myth. When was the last time the Mets had a top 5 payroll?

Facts: 30 MLB teams and the Mets have the 9th highest payroll. Between the Mets and Yankees, the highest paid player in NY belongs to a Mets player (Cesepes). Ever since the Madoff Ponzi scheme the Wilpons have been painted as cheap. They are cheap in the sense of not re-investing money collected from insurance due to long-term injured players. Their initial offers are competitive to the market value. The Mets over paid for Familia. Hell, Largas isn't worth $9million a year.

The problem is that the Mets aren't currently a premium destination for the top shelf talent that become free agents. They need to do a better job at identifying young talent, build from within and then spend on the occasional elite player. Until then, they'll need to overpay players to come there and even then it's going to be risks that might not work out.

The cheap argument isn't valid anymore, IMO.

Since you ask, it was 2011.

From 2000-2011, Mets payroll was in the top 6 EVERY year. In fact that may actually have extended prior to 2000, I don't have that data. Then the Madoff bubble burst, and they went on an austerity kick, from which they are now emerging.

The Mets payroll was 19th in 2015. They made it to the World Series. It's not all about how much you spend.

Picked up these from comments on the Mets blog:

"Pete Alonso’s 1st inning HR traveled 424 feet. It’s his 15th HR that traveled at least 400 feet"

"Pete Alonso has 22 HR's after his first 66 games the next Met rookie on that list is Swoboda with 13 HR's (Strawberry had 12 HR's after 66 games)."

And, this is so true about being a Mets fan:
"wait... after the lost this afternoon i read the comments here and thought the mets won't win another game this season or even like the next 10 seasons so since we won this game does that mean we are gonna go undefeated this season and like win the next 10 world series?"

---"Be patient. After a win, it takes a little longer for some to find something to complain about."
--------------

Finally, seems the Yankee trolls are hiding under their rocks after the beat down in Game 2. [banana]

Don't have much to say. The Yanks haven't been playing well lately...lost 2 of three at Toronto and 2 of 3 at Cleveland.
Split two with the Amazins. Tough to watch game two, but that's baseball. Even the best MLB team is gonna lose two months worth of games during a season.
I just hate losing to the Mets. Vargas was great....Paxton sucked. And, of course Boone had to go with the marginal members of the bullpen once he lifted the starter. I've seen that before. I knew what was likely to happen.
Listen, Stanton and Judge will be back soon enough. The Yankees will almost certainly make a move for a starter. And their record is pretty good. It's nice to be in first place. And especially to look down and see the Bosux so far behind. But it's gonna be tough to beat the Astros.
BTW, I watched as much as I could stand of the game and I honestly couldn't stand the ESPN crew. The Mets announcers were at least listenable. I missed Michael Kay and David Cone.

That 9th highest payroll isn't real. They're getting back a ton of money from Cespedes and Wright and they don't put it back into the team. And 9th in payroll isn't really great when you play in the biggest market, have a new stadium and are part owners of the TV network. The Mets/SNY make tons of money, the Wilpons don't really spend to win. They spend just enough that if everything clicks they can be good 2 out of every 10 years.

I said the insurance money is not re-invested, but the initial spending on salaries is not false. The problem with the Wilpons is they don't spend money on the right players. They are more concerned with earning money from their investments regardless of how they got there.

The Mets haven't had a top 10 payroll since 2011. Throw in all the factors Andy just mentioned and it's 100% fine to blame the Wilpons even if we have also spent on the wrong players. We rarely go the extra step and just fine being average.

The Met's just don't spend their money wisely. They used to have no idea how to run and manage their minor league system and scouting(OM, is a great hire to get this ship righted IMO)
The Met's have actually developed a few good young players but not enough to backfill them. Rosario/Alonso/Smith/McNeil/Conforto/Nimmo . are a oretty good bunch of young players to come through the farm system.
They have something to build on now and should get off the "win now" wagon.

A fair point but I think this race is still a 4 team race and will go down to the wire like 1973.
You gotta believe!
I want to believe. But it has been hard to believe. Hopefully, with Alonso, McNeil and Smith regularly in the lineup, and Conforto and Frazier producing, the offense can produce. Need two of Noah, deGrom and Wheeler to find their old form and for Vargas to keep it going in his bid for the Cy Young Award.

Braves now in 1st place in NL East. Current standings will likely be how season ends, IMO.
I hope not cause I can't stand them. But I must admit that they do a better job of developing young players. Had the rookie of the year last year and have another this year who is probably the best rookie in the NL but might not catch Alonso in the HR and RBI depts. due to starting the year in the minors. Catch 22 cause I don't like the Philthies at all either.

Well, then we must throw in the Nationals, but my hatred for them waned when they dealt Harper and Murphy.
But looking at it objectively, as you did with the Braves, the Phils too are doing the right things in building a contender. It is hard to see that with the Mets, but the core of Smith, Alonso and McNeil is promising--the question is, who is coming up behind them?

Almost zero chance he is with the team at the end of the year.

I am assuming Riley? Question...do you think he can keep it up once pitchers get to see him more. Concerning stat is 4 BB to 36K

Hopefully the kid Baty who is supposed to be signed by this weekend for one. Still need to find and/or develop a 5 tool type corner OF.

I dunno. Hopefully we'll start to get the answer to that Monday night. Be nice if the Mets have a working scouting report on him that works. I know I'm tired of the media hype he's getting down here already.

It is false. They knew they were getting a ton of money back for Cespedes and Wright. So bragging about being 9th in payroll is not legitimate, bragging about being 9th while playing in NYC is really quite pathetic anyway. The Mets should be a big market team like the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs and Dodgers instead they spend like a team that would play in Omaha, Nebraska.

It’s not bad enough that we would have gotten fleeced giving Kelenec for Diaz straight up but they got the Mets to take Cano too. Unbelievably stupid trade.

Make lugo the stopper. So sick of Diaz I don’t give a damn attitude.
If you want to ***** about Diaz' pitching, feel free. But his ATTITUDE? What do you know about his attitude?

I think I get it. You like it when deGrom slams his glove into the dugout wall when he gives up a run. You don't like it when Diaz doesn't. Different people, different personalities.

Alonso blew it. Winning 4-2 after 8 the umps wanted to cover the field in a pretty heavy downpour. He came out and somehow bullied them into changing their minds. Diaz then proceeded to spit up 2 so the game is now tied AND delayed..

40% of the season into it, it looks like this trade is going to go down as one of the worst trades in the history of the organization. On same level as Nolan Ryan, Seaver, Jeff Kent, Scott Kazmir level. Maybe time to fire BVW and Callaway. Break this mediocrity up and start all over again.

I'm not bragging about sh*t. Too often perception distort reality. Then again I'm not completely disagreeing with you. I understand you want to win the argument. Re-read what I said.
