“I do know this: We have a very loyal fan base, we have good facilities, and we have reasonably good financial stability. We don’t have a lot of people, but there are ways to overcome that,” Osborne said. “We overcame that at one time, and there’s no reason why it can’t be overcome again. It’s not automatic. It’s not quick and easy. The only thing that will tell is the passage of time.”

This is the part that stood out to me:
“I do know this: We have a very loyal fan base, we have good facilities, and we have reasonably good financial stability."
I thought the consensus was that we were sitting much better than this.

I think the statement is fairly accurate. What do you think is wrong with it?

I always read on here that our facilities are on par with the best in the nation and our B1G money and Adidas contract should have us sitting pretty as well.

Ok. I haven't seen many other facilities besides ours so I am ignorant of that situation. I am also not an accountant and have zero knowledge of the soundness of our athletic budget. I do know we have loyal fans. I will just have to accept that Osborne knows what he is talking about for the other two. He is the master of understatement. When he wants to be. Either way, he always chooses his words very carefully.

Osborne is not going to say we are sitting much better than almost all others. Shoot, we have seen a lot of video of Scott politicking after the Orange Bowl. Where is Osborne trying to win everyone over about how much better we were than Michigan? He basically said, "Well, we won all our games. I'm not sure there was much more that we could do." Osborne is the king of the understatement.

You're aware that TO is the king of understatement? If he says that we have reasonably good financial stability, what he means is that we are literally running out of room to store the gold.

Exactly. After boat-racing a team by 50 points with third stringers, Tom would typically say something like this to the TV reporter in a very subdued voice..."Well, I thought we played okay. We have some things to work on, and their team really put up a fight."

I still remember when, prior to the 1995 season, TO said something to the effect of "We may have a pretty good team. We definitely have some pieces to the puzzle and I hope, as the season goes on, we'll find a few more."

Well we'd better be careful then. The Lanisters are probably marching as we speak.
I see what you did there...the Lannisters use the gold to purchase the Golden Company (a group of golden-clad Knights). UCF wears gold, and is known as the Knights. Thus, we need to use the "gold" to buy Scott Frost, a homegrown golden boy, and leader of a group of golden-clad Knights, to slay the B1G West usurpers, and protect us from the Night King (Urban) and the White Walkers (Harbaugh, Franklin, Chryst, etc.). Nice!

That was way more in depth than what I was going for, but I'll take it.

I was just going to comment I turned off the Ohio St game at halftime and watched GoT reruns instead.

And remember Scott said , “I don’t see how you can deny Nebraska, AND THAT GREAT MAN, at least a share”. Believe Scott did it for him. That’s what I’ve always liked about the speech.

3 posts in a row that used the term "the king of the understatement?" How many accounts does Tom have?

TO said about Frost's comment, "I'm not going to get into all that, we played 13 and won them all".

After a player got into trouble he said something like, "There are a lot of things that can happen after midnight, and almost all of them are bad."

About the early days something like, "I wasn't really thinking about coaching when I was a GA, it didn't pay hardly anything, but I could eat at the training table."

On marriage, "When Nancy and I got married we decided I would make all the big decisions and she would make the little decisions. Through all these years we have never made a big decision."

And one from Bob Devaney, "With all the excitement I didn't have a chance to talk to Bear (Bryant) after the game. I did give him the peace sign and he returned half of it."

I may just be getting old and sentimental but this comment really hit home for me today and why I still love this University and T.O.

“If a guy left without a degree, we still saw to it that he could come back on scholarship even though we didn’t have to do that,” Osborne said. “We actively pursued those guys and tried to get them back here. We cared about their health, we cared about their nutrition, and we cared about their families.

@redwine65 ....he'll tell you that Frost was just being whiney with that comment.
I'm just saying compared to Dr. Tom and J Peters, who basicly spoke volumes in a few words by saying "we done all we could" (translation: " we scull dragged tenn, and went 13-0. And wasn't ducking in the rose bowl with the ducks like michigan")

frost did sound a lil whiney.

Does this mean that a scholly was used on these guys that could have gone to a new recruit? If so, I'm not sure that would work today.

Once they have used up their eligibility the rules are different with regards to how those scholarships can be funded.

Have you ever for a farmer talk about how rich he is, even though he's rolling in it. Not the Nebraska way.
