I need your opinion here. How does the early signing period effect this. My gut says that mschool haves have already tied up most of their ships so it would seem that there would be pressure on a recruit to sign early on so as not to lose a chance at a scholarship. Before the early signing went into effect I could see the process running out through the 5 weeks but now, with so many spots already taken, this could be a "he who hesitates is lost" kind of deal. The same holds true for the schools, how long can they risk holding out for the kid they really want when a kid they recruited but is a little down on their list is willing to sign.
Let's look at last year.....it was the summer, well past the signing period and there were the Doucoure would or would not reclassify to enter school this past Fall...We entered then with a spot open while other potential names were out there for grad transfers even at that late stage.
Let's go back to the 1st summer Pike arrived....we had tons of spots available and found Eugene and CJ Gettys in August of 2016....I think both players fit into a rebuilding program....one took the leadership mantle and ran with it.....(Gettys).....another one had a very uneven Freshman season (Eugene) and a better sophomore season, marked by improvement and a tough injury that he gutted out and got back on the court with.....Not saying he's the most talented player, but taking 30+ charges and possibly being a team captain/leader is something to consider.
I would not rush into filling all these spots by the end of the spring signing period.....there is no "deadline" at all.....the signing period is just a binding agreement with the player and school....
RU can go into next year with 11 or 12 players (assuming 1 grad and 1 McConnell), IF it meant we were doing very well with some key 2019 recruits that would be true difference makers (Mathis/Baker level or better players)......Maybe it's a sit out freshman transfer that hits the market in May, after school semesters finish up.
I don't think it's a situation where you rush into this....we got bailed out with the Souf and Bullock situations and having those spots freed up.......I think you go grad transfer in front-court 1st, sit out transfer 2nd at any position...and potentially 2019 verbal that can reclassify and arrive in late summer of 2018....
