Almost all respectable P4 teams try to play 1 Power4 OOC game each year (here's looking at you Indy and Deby). Been that way for years and years. And before the BIG went to 9 games, some, like IA, would play 2 (like AZ and ISU).
But going back to the Fry era and before, my gawd it's no wonder an average program like IA found it tough to find wins. A few examples....
 ORST,USC, AZ + 8 BIG games
 ORST,PSU + 9 BIG games
 ORST,PSU + 9 BIG games
 UCLA,PSU, AZ + 8 BIG games
UCLA, PSU, USC+ 8 BIG games
SYR, PSU, USC + 8 BIG games
SYR, PSU, USC + 8 BIG games
ISUX, AZ, UCLA + 8 BIG games
ISUX, UTAH, AZ + 8 BIG games
OK, NEB, ISUX + 8 BIG games
NEB, ISUX, AZ + 8 BIG games
NEB, ISUX, UCLA + 8 BIG games
 NEB, AZ, ISU +8 BIG
 ISUX. PSU +9 BIG games
the were ZERO breathers. NONE. Not even one Towson State, N. ILL, W Mich, etc.
