Losing Harper the last 3 games (if we're being honest) has NOT helped, however....

....we are well on our way to being the biggest "flop" in the NIL era. EASILY.
Yeah, I don’t get it. Purdue just keeps trucking along no matter how things change. Illinois is scoring points like the vintage Steph Curry Warrior teams, but we still can’t figure things out.

Because they recruit shooters from the mid west. Rember Larry Bird.

we had 4 freshmen and jwill on the floor at times during this game. not a winning approach in the portal nil era.

Yes, that’s the point. How do you maintain some development and continuity that you complement with a few strategic portal transfers? We haven’t figured out that formula.

Pike did a 180 with this years team building, stars and portal guys, completely abandoned the culture program he'd built.

This isn't a great Purdue team with a dominating center but they still have two terrific guards who can score and create open shots for teammates. In contrast Rutgers is a disorganized mess on offense and defense. The RAC crowd has no impact because the offense is so bad.

Yea, hi IQ guards with great handles, first steps, great awareness, always under control…

I don’t think you can build a culture program anymore in this era
It's harder but you just need to recruit players that fit your system and culture every year in the portal

Pike went away from the Rutgers culture and now we have no team identity or team strength

What is this team's identity?

What does this team do well?

It’s called a coach with a system! With an offense! Who knows how to tweak based on the characteristics of his players.

Rutgers usually wins the opening tap but quickly results in a turnover with a pass to the center near the basket.

They pass and move vs us dribbling and standing around.

They recruit players who actually know how to play basketball.
Guys, I am sorry I vented with that post. Please spare me the sarcastic responses which aren’t very funny. We’re all just as pissed as each other at this point.

But our culture has been ISO and defense. The offense is unacceptable and has been most years. Purdue showed how an offense is run and that team is not loaded with talent. That’s coaching. That’s a culture.

The sad truth is when we move with reason, stay in motion and pass quickly we’ve been effective. I don’t know why we don’t continue to do it.

We have iso players but Pike brought in 3 point no D specialists in Martini and Hayes instead of getting long defensive athletes

But they are HS recruits. He went for 0 in the portal in a season that should have been 100% about this year knowing 1 season with Dylan and Ace

Purdue doesnt have any portal players...Painter recruits 2 and 3 stars and is an amazing coach. He has a system and sticks to it. They lost their supposed starting center to a broken leg to start the year. He does not guarantee playing time as a freshmen and told a big time recruit this year that and he went elsewhere

Isn’t that what we all criticized Pike for until he changed course the last couple of years? Careful what we wish for.

Smith and loyer were obviously very talented tough smart players from day 1. Now they are juniors. Smith is a tremendous college player. Painter is a great coach but if you picked guys in a pick up game if you had first choice you’d have purdues 5 vs ours
