Omaha - What I Saw (long)

So while we're a few weeks removed from witnessing one the most magical moments in Mississippi State history, I kept getting the urge to share my perspective of the whole deal. Maybe for some to relate to but also for me to put into words one of the most memorable events I've ever been part of. If not for anyone else, for me.

What better place to share than with my fellow heathens on SPS?

Where did it start for me? Well like many of you, I quietly followed our guys throughout the entire season this year. I rarely missed a game on TV. Friday nights are typically Xbox night for me so I even set up a projector to project the games on the wall above the tv while I either wreaked havoc in GTA, got humbled in COD, or ran the same five plays on offense in Madden.

Throughout the season I'd halfway joke with my wife that if we made it to the finals this year, I had to go. She'd half jokingly reply with a grin, playful eye roll, and a "Sure Bakes". Now mind you, this is a wife that has to deal with me as a husband as well as 2 boys both under the age of 4. Bless her.

I remember not being able to go in 2013 because of football and it KILLED me. Actually a lot of the football guys really wanted to go.

Fast forward to post-season play.

We win the Regional. I remind her. Grin, playful eye roll, "Sure Bakes".

We win the Super Regional. I remind her again. Grin, playful eye roll, "Sure Bakes".

CWS. I kept it in check and kept quiet as we witnessed a Bulldog team that absolutely battled and showed an uncanny amount of GRIT in the College World Series.

Then we got to the Virginia game that we all remember well. What we're quick to forget (me included) is most of that game was gut wrenching to watch. I had a feeling it was going to be a hard fought game. I set up on the back porch, tv on, and started a Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne cigar. I knew I was going to need a cigar that would last me through the game. Boy did I draw on that cigar hard during the majority of that game.

The magical 8th inning happens. We knock out Virginia. I remind her again. Grin, playful eye roll, "Sure Bakes".

Texas game comes. Everything is on the line. We all know it. Leggett's walk off. Insane. I was ecstatic but also annoyed because apparently my live feed was about 20 seconds behind the actual game. I get a TWITTER notification of the walk off before it happens. Anti climatic. But I remember getting the notification, turning to my wife and saying "Oh my God I think we just won". Sure enough, next pitch happens and we're headed to the finals.

I remind her again. Grin, playful eye roll, "Well you better start booking your flight and hotel before they get sold out". This is a wife that is knowingly giving up the help at home for a couple of days to let me go and potentially experience Mississippi State history. Huge shoutout to Mrs. Swede.

Flights booked. Hotel booked. Oh crap what about tickets? Fortunately, one of our fellow posters, prdubya, hooked me up. Huge shout out to him. He said to bring it home. Little did we both know...

I land in Omaha. My parents had actually driven up earlier in the week so they picked me up at the airport.

Guys, I've been blessed to play in some big football games for State during my tenure there, but I was truly MORE nervous for each of these final games that I ever was for football. We all knew what this could mean for our university.

So what did I see in Omaha?

While we all knew Dak was there, I saw a bunch of other ex-players. To me that was pretty cool. I guess we saw it from the player's perspective and knew how big of a deal it was in their eyes. That also speaks to the family aspect of Mississippi State. It's not some term we throw around. No, once you're a bulldog you're always a bulldog.

I saw a Mississippi State team that wasn't like the typical team we see. I mean no offense to any past teams when I say this, and this includes teams I was on when I was there. But this particular Mississippi State baseball team got hit in the mouth with adversity time and time again and they continued to get back up, wiped the blood off, and refused to falter in their will to win it all. There was no aw shucks well maybe next time. In fact just the opposite. I saw a team that when they got hit in the mouth, they took the approach of "Ok now you've pissed me off and you're about to pay royally". I mean truly it was like watching a western sometimes with this squad. Tombstone-esque if you will. After the first game against Vandy in the finals, it's like our team came back and collectively said, "You tell em I'm coming. And hell's coming with me". That's what a blue blood does.

I saw a home field advantage in Omaha. Guys it was truly a sea of maroon. Everywhere you looked. It was incredible to witness. Downtown Omaha was just covered with maroon. During the game it was even crazier. I have no doubt it gave our players some confidence and I also have no doubt it took some confidence from Vandy. I mean truly, Vandy had one little section of fans and that was it. The rest of the stadium was maroon. It reminded me of when I'd go to the SEC basketball tournament during the Stansbury days. You'd get there and there'd be a sea of blue. Kentucky fans EVERYWHERE. Omaha was like that for us except even bigger. We took over that city.

Let's fast forward the last out of game three. I have a feeling that some share the same thought I had. I was wanting and expecting it to end with Sims throwing that signature up and in heater and blow it right by the batter for strike three. The bunt caught me off guard. I wasn't ready. Fortunately I had my phone recording just in case.

Bunt is down. We throw him out. Mississippi State just won the national championship.

I'll never forget this moment. I literally didn't know what to do at first. It was like that Ricky Bobby moment where "I don't know what to do with my hands" type situation. I hug my mom and then turn to my dad and say, "This is going to change everything for Mississippi State" as we hug. I look around and I see grown men crying. I see smiles and looks of disbelief like "did we really just win the national championship?". I see nothing but love for Mississippi State University shared by thousands in that stadium. I see families hugging. I see strangers hugging. I see incredible unity. Unity that we all long for deep down. Where we've all put our differences aside. All as one, celebrating this moment. Not white people and black people, not democrats and republicans. But instead, one true unified Mississippi State family. This is why sports are so great. You rarely get that kind of unification on such a macro level. Sometimes at concerts. But nothing of the magnitude of which was in Omaha that incredible night.

I'm damn proud to be a Bulldog. That's what I saw in Omaha.

Hail State.

Great read as always. My hand still hurts a little from when I slapped my kitchen counter and yelled "Hell yes!" when TA hit that home run against Virginia.

Obviously, I had moved to watch the game from the kitchen because Scotty walked and Kellum hit his homer while I was getting a drink. I didn't move from that spot for the rest of the game.

Yes. Those first moments after it happened were surreal. It was almost like an out of body experience. Like you were watching it happen but didn't know how to process it. Whether to cry or laugh or scream or dance or hug somebody so you wound up doing it all at the same time. I'm just glad we had some time to prepare or it might have put some in the hospital.

I too made the pilgrimage and after that game 1 gut punch I was seriously questioning my decision but the dogs would not allow me to be let down. Not these dogs.

Your story is strikingly similar to mine. Young Kids, banter with wife about going (wife rolling eyes), parents already in Omaha, watching every game on the edge of my seat thinking "how am I going to afford to get there and back if this keeps up". Even though she wouldn't admit it, in the back of her mind she knew exactly where I would be if this team made it to the National Championship round. When the time came she was more understanding than I ever expected, and that made the situation that much more enjoyable.

Your story was my story, except I didn't kick.

Overall great read.

Great write up Swede. One thing that stood out to me from being there was the huge number of Dawg fan kids that were there and seemed to be hanging on every pitch just like the adults. That is what tells me that our baseball program will produce many more championships in the future.

Outside of the birth of my daughter, that was the greatest experience of my life. I will be telling my grandkids about that trip until they are sick of hearing about it. Lol.

The grown men crying and hugging part is the damn truth. Dudes hardened from years of pulling for Mississippi State and coming up short. Made me think of my father who passed away before experiencing it, and I'm sure countless others had the same thought.

We live in a world where Mississippi State has a national championship, and it isn't something that a magazine awarded to us in 1960, with seven other teams staking a claim to it. It's undisputed, we went through the gauntlet to win it, and we won it on the field.

It's kinda funny. I had said the same thing to my wife and she never gave me any grief about it. She knew deep down how much this meant to me.

On the way out of the stadium after we won the thing, I called her. I am man enough to admit I was emotional. I told her I wished for 2 things: First that she was here with me and, second that I could call my dad who passed away last year. My dad was never a baseball fan, but I have to think he would have liked this.

I picked my friend up from the airport who lives in Arizona. I told him he was about to see just how much Maroon was engulfing the city. Literally everywhere we went we saw people dressed up in Maroon. We did see the occasional Vandy fan or Texas fan, but it was at least 95% State fans.

What was impressive to me was to see all of the former players from all sports that were there. You mentioned Dak. Jeff Simmons was there. Palmeiro was all over the place. Jay Powell. Ben Beckwith. Papelbon. It really was like a home game for us. I can honestly say I've never been more proud to be a Dawg.

When we got that final out, I hugged my friend and was high fiving everyone around. That trumpet at the end playing the slow rendition of "Take me out to the ballgame." Tears. I couldn't help but think of all the people that were hard core fans that never got the chance to see this. But like Coach Lemonis said - they had the best seat in the house.

Nothing but amazing what this MSU baseball team did. I will admit, there was one moment that, in my head, I was thinking was THE 'We are MState' moment that would cost us the championship and that was when Rowdey just totally lost the flyball in CF that landed about 5 feet from his head in the Texas game on Friday night. That was probably THE key play in that game that we lost to Texas 8-5. A lead off double that should have been a can of corn out that allowed them to stretch the lead on us and pull off the win. My thought was at that time that we are either going to lose to Texas again tomorrow OR even if we win we won't get to use Bednar in the Finals and that will cost us the title. But this team would have none of that and just shook it off, pulled off the win the next day against TX to make the Finals, and then proceeded to win that 2nd game against Vandy to get us back to Bednar who pitched on 3 days rest like it was no problem whatsoever. This team was not going to be denied. I wish I could have been there in person but even on TV is was quite the surreal experience.

It was an honor, but not sure I deserve it. I just did what a good Dawg should do when work stops them from from attending. Sold my tickets (screw Ticketmaster fees!) for what I paid earlier in the week so Swede could pay my only “fees” - a picture from the seats and that he “bring. it. HOME!!!”

(Note: he was two for two… Swede is a man of his word.)

Shout out to the Pack for providing a place to transact.

If you can pay it forward to a Dawg, highly recommend. I got to live the last out via video message from the Swede and it was glorious.

… and I guess maybe be nice to an ole miss person every now and then too.

I'm damn proud to be a Bulldog. Hail State.

And all the people said “amen!”

Hope to see many of the Pack in Nashville this fall as we rub it in their stupid faces that we are National Champs while football repays the favor of taunting the baseball team after the series with a 70+ point victory

You tell a great story but we also liked the way you wrote about this past football season and the “Pirate.” You’ve probably got a book in there that will pop out someday.
Can’t wait to hear more from you.

I know Nashville can be ridiculously stupid sometimes when it comes to hotel prices but it looks to already be that way October 22-24 when State plays there. At least hotels downtown and around Vandy are anyway.
Haven’t checked Brentwood/Franklin or airport area yet.

Same - we had an agreement after the Super Regional, that if we made the finals I was gone. We have two kids under two, so it's not easy to pick up and leave for a week. Except my wife decided she would book a plane ticket as well. Which she did, then looked at my mom and said "can you keep the kids, I just booked a flight." Luckily she agreed.

There were probably hundreds of similar stories. Here is mine. I told myself all during the season that if we got into the championship series I would be there. But then it took a decisive game 2 in our bracket to get there which left a very tight window to arrange travel. So there I was trying to find flights, hotel, and car on day of travel. I was back and forth about going but my lovely wife pushed me to go and wisely reminded me that I would regret it for the rest of my life if I didn't go and we won it. We were already at church when I got a text from my brother saying he was going so I finally decided I was going too no matter what. I found a quiet place and booked everything just before the service started. Then got to Omaha and found tickets had gone to crazy town going for 150-200 bucks in the outfield. Then that game 1 debacle happened where we were in the game for exactly one half inning and I was feeling pretty low. I was unable to keep from second guessing my decision to go, wondering if I had come all that way and spent all that $$ just to watch us get our butts handed to us in two games. Then as they say the rest is history.

Everyone should make it a twofer and go to that game as well to see all the former Bulldogs that will be playing. Hopefully we can make the Vandy game a home game like LSU fans did to them last year. It was really entertaining seeing their stadium filled with purple and yellow.

Great write up, Swede. It was truly awesome and magical experience.

Other than the stadium experiences another noteworthy tidbit that I haven’t seen mentioned is the drive back home on Thursday. We left Council Bluffs at about 9 am. Pulled onto interstate into a Convoy of exuberant, satisfied, relieved, possibly hungover and genuinely happy National Championship Fans!

Until we got to Kanas City about 75% of vehicles were State fans. On every vehicle that I passed or was passed by, we all were ringing invisible cowbells and giving each other number 1 hand signals.

This continued all the way home, even as us fans got more and more spread out. Nearly every stop for gas or bathroom breaks along the way was met with a HailState from some other fan that was at same place. When darkness fell upon this glorious day the cowbell ringing and number one gestures, were replaced with a short beep beep (Hail State) horn blow. This was also repeated many times and continued well into Mississippi.

I was only there the first week, but remember thinking how unique the team acted in the little bit that I saw of them off the field. Very business like attitude. Didn't seem overwhelmed by the moment at all. You could tell the coaches had them very well prepared to win it all. But I've got to think it was also helped having guys like TA, Rowdey, Hatcher, and even Self who had experienced everything that goes with Omaha twice before.

I left a good bit earlier than you, so it wasn't exclusively state fans, but I saw my fair share. It was the same experience you had with the cars that were State fans.

I had gone up the week before to see us play Texas and saw quite a few State cars. We all gave each other a honk or two when we passed. It truly was one of the most surreal experiences of my life.

I expect to do it again next year.

I lost my voice yelling in game 3 against Notre Dame. I felt like a witnessed a miracle in the 8th inning against Virginia. I actually cried with my wife after the Texas game winner by Leggett. Then I cursed the NCAA after watching Lieter light us up. I could not process the last out in game 3 against Vandy. I am still trying.

i have a game winner shirt that has worked since game 3 against Notre Dame, against UT and against Vandy in the final game 3. I plan to bring it out when necessary.
