OLine upgrades?

There are no OL commitments for 2022 and Jurgens is gone. Have there been any pickups in the transfer portal or known possibilities here? IMO, next to the dismal special teams the OL was a real weakness and needs difference makers.

We signed one HS OL and have picked up two OL from the portal. I would still like to see us add a plug and play stud, OL starter. But who wouldn’t?

Love the additions to the offensive backfield from the transfer portal, but it is very concerning that the weakest link (BY FAR) on offense has not been addressed. Tom Brady couldn't run an offense with the way AM was running for his life last year. I'm a little surprised they haven't hit the portal even harder.

My thought, they could bring in the second coming of Peyton manning, Gail sayers, and Jerry rice and it doesn’t mean crap until we get a big 10 O line

Our offensive line was terrible, but the times Adrian held a ball for 5 seconds and Frosts lack of short routes amplified more than it needed to be.

Agree 1000% percent...our inability to call (and execute) 5 yard in or sideline routes like most normal teams is 2nd in frustration only to our reluctance to running fade routes inside the opp 10 to our 6-4 or 6-5 WR or 6-9 TE....perplexing.

Oh I believe we have the players on the OL that can produce they just need coaching up which I expect will happen this year.

I am in the camp that believes we have very very good talent at the O-Line position but our former coach was beyond awful. I believe if Riola is just an average coach the line will be much better.

We’re putting a lot on the shoulders of Raiola to put something together with what he has.

I wouldn’t expect any dominant line play, but we need improvement.

Or an occasional middle screen. One of the ways you slow down an overly aggressive pass rush.

But there's a zero percent chance our QB could have executed it properly and a higher than average chance it would have been floated for a pick 6, so one more tool to help out the offense left out.

I also would like to remind people that last year line was extremely inexperienced and had no real leadership in the unit. They will all be a year older with experience next season.

I worry about leadership. Jurgens seemed ok and Sichterman was the elder statesmen, but without them, who’s leading that room?

It’s a question I ask about other position groups also. Each year, leadership often garners less attention than the up and coming talent discussion.

It’s always nice to have solid leadership in each position room.

Agree 100%. Prochazka, Cocoran, even Benhart were top Oline recruits. There's several other guys who had decent ratings. We have more than enough talent to put together a decent Oline.

According to pff MOST of Martinez's throws, (roughly one-third) were short, ie between 1 and 9 yards and it was his lowest passing grade.

So there were plenty of short passes. He is just terrible at them. In fact; "Martinez ranks No. 130 of 143 quarterbacks in the FBS with a 56.6 pass grade on short passes.""He has the fifth-worst percentage in the Power Five."

He was far better throwing deep. On passes over 20 yards Martinez went 29/61 with 4 drops. But that had more to do with the play design and the receiver's being good at going to get the ball.

This is because on those deep throws PFF uses the Big Time Throw (BTT)metrics to determine how good the throw itself was. "PFF defines Big Time Throws as "a pass with excellent ball location and timing, generally thrown further down the field and/or into a tighter window.""

When you run every FBS QB with a deep passing grade over 90 through the BTT metrics Martinez ranks 51st out of 52 players. 2nd to last with a rating of just 19.7 percent.

He's a below average QB who is a dynamic runner. And as we saw the last several years when you combine that with awful decision making abilities you end up with a lot of really exciting losses.

I so badly want to see some attitude and nastiness on the OL! A swagger that exudes a position of power and keeps DL up at night before a game...

And that wasn't going to happen if Frost hadn't fired our former OL coach. I don't know how good our OL under the guidance of Raiola will be this year but I expect it to be better than what we've seen in the past under Austin.

Sichterman was older but still very inexperienced in playing time. He really only played on special teams and mop up duty before last year. And Cam was too much of a hot head to offer advice when guys went in to panic mode.

The fact that Farniok and Jaimes are on NFL active rosters should tell you everything you need to know about how horrible our line coaching has been the last few years. Having 2 guys with NFL size and athleticism on an Oline that has performed as bad as ours during their tenure is damn near criminal.

If Cocoran or Benhart had went to another school and played the exact way up to this point and they transferred to Nebraska today, we’d all be celebrating. We’d be talking about how bad *** our O-line is. Think it’s funny that we believe a back up for Okie Lite will be able to start day one, just cause he’s new.

agree that Austin was not getting the most of our players, but a few upgrades here and there are needed.

Who is going to play center? RT? Where will Corcoran land? These are things that Raiola will need to figure out during spring ball.

I think the battle on the OL are much more intriguing than the QB battle

From Anthony's Okie State page
2019 (Freshman): Saw action in nine games and started four. Rotated in for important stretches of nearly every game during the second half of the season.
2020 (Sophomore): Opening day starter at right tackle who was nearly lost for the season after sustaining an injury in week one ... Missed eight contests, but returned for the regular-season finale and for the bowl game.

Looks like he spent 2021 as a backup at guard or tackle. So his story looks more like headed for life as a long term starter, the injury, then life as a backup. So he is transferring for a chance to play more.

I do believe Okie State graduated 2-3 starting OL though. Why not stay and battle for an opportunity there?

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he already graduate and wanted to start a masters program in a field that NU is strong in? Some guys actually do things for an academic reason.

Actually I found a Rivals article where he says that he has graduated and will be seeking a masters in sports management. It looks to me like OkieState doesn't offer a masters in that.

My senile old brain every now and then remembers something it encounters. Getting a guy with starting OL experience at a P5 program can't be a horrible thing.

But somehow to some it is.
He was good enough to start as a freshman for a pretty damned good team. After an absence it might have been pretty tough to get his spot back from a guy of equal physical talent. I understand the concern about taking other team's backups but he has shown he can play at a P5 level. I'm not sure some of our O linemen can say that yet. Okie State was at least being considered for the playoff. Clearly at least part of his motivation is his academic pursuit. IF he wanted to continue to play at Okie State he would have either had to delay graduation while taking a bunch of irrelevant courses or enter a graduate program that wasn't his first choice. The odds of any of these guys playing in the NFL are so low that he's smart to get after the masters that he wants.

If the desire to play in the league is there and things break his way, great. If not, he has a degree more relevant to his interests.
NU has had Olinemen playing in the NFL that didn't particularly knock it out of the park when they played in Memorial. So who knows what will happen with the kid.
