100%. Both looked like different wrestlers than their entire career. Guarantee, 1-offs. Not worried a bit. Valencia will be a problem though.

Been watching more wrestling again for the first time in years. Watched a ton of freestyle over the summer and am stoked about the season. Crazy to think we have one returning starter, but I may be more excited about this teams ups and downs they will have this year than our team last year.
25- sprat looked great. He’s going to continue to be a problem in this weight.
33- Figs gassed. That was a very tough match. He is going to win a bunch of matches this year if he can keep his gas tank where it needs to be. Will the rise in weight affect him? Probably some. I think he looked like an AA if he can keep his confidence up.
41- kid looks fantastic. I was a little concerned after a few losses in FS this summer, but of course folk style is a different game and his propensity to get pins should make for some fun matches this year. He may be a little up and down throughout the year at times, but this kid could also have a AA type year as well. He showed a bit of a mean streak last night and I loved it.
49- Valencia looked great in FS this summer. He’s going to be a tough out at this weight. Describing Swid as looking sick was on point. Not saying he was, but when you compare him to what we saw last week, he looked very lethargic and looked like a guy that has not competed much in the last 20 months.
57- been watching this kid this summer in FS and he showed a TON of grit even in losses. The he is a bull and seems to have a lot of mat smarts and just a feel for what the opponent is going to do. This kid may be the best recruit in this class just due to his confidence.
65- I love Dee. But I am not as sold on him like others are. My concern for him is not in skill, but in his head. Last night’s win was big. I feel that he needs to be a wrestler that comes into a match confident and wrestles confident. He may be more susceptible to getting into his own head a bit… but there is no doubt this kid is a winner when it comes down to it That 2nd period rideout was extremely impressive and was. It something I had seen much of just due to mostly watching him in FS.
74- I didn’t see much of this match to say much… but happy with the results. I’m excited to see more out of Alex.
84- seemed to be off last night compared to what we saw last week, but great wrestlers win the tough ones also. He did what he needed to do.
97- I am very concerned about this kids confidence, but he pulled a great win out last night against a tough freshman. He had the look of quitting on his face and out of nowhere turned it around. Not sure if coach said something to him at the end of the match or if he pulled that out of himself, but it was very fun to watch. Heard DT talk to him after the match about not giving up and think coach sees the possible confidence issues as well.
285- that was fun. So happy to see him have that win last night and it was great seeing his level of excitement in himself. His transformation of his body and the fact that he stayed with the program and worked to get better instead of pouting has put him near the top of my favorite wrestlers on this team.

I was elated, disappointed and then re-elated for the evening. I guess that is par for an opening match. I admit that I tend to be a pessimist so the major disappointments at 149 and 197 loom large in my mind. After watching Merrill in high school
dominate it is hard to wrap my head around what I saw last night. He looks average at best. Like most on this board I tend to think Swiderski was sick as there is no explanation that explains how a highly aggressive wrestler with no fear could
turn into the mild and timid wrestler I saw last night. He looked scared out there from the get-go. Someone said he
gassed in the 2nd but to me he had no gas from the start. I hope this was a fluke, Spratley looked great but even this was a mild disappointment as Provo was not there to give him better competition. Figueroa looked outstanding at the start but it was clear he was out-horsed in the match and I believe he is a 125 pounder and not 133. Ramirez could be the answer but even he needs another year to grow into the weight. I was highly elated to see Vega take apart a competent wrestler but he does look small for 141. Robideau may have made it hard for David to even consider him for a redshirt season. His match and the Heavyweight match were the most surprising and spirit lifting matches of the night for me. Konner got SIX Takedowns in his match and never had the feeling of absolute boredom I experienced in previous years whether he won or lost. Facundo totally dominated in his Cowboy debut but did it in a workman-like manner.
It is hard to be disappointed in a 33-7 win and overall I am not but there is a lot of work to be done for this team to place in the top four this year in my opinion. I guess we will know a lot more after next weekend. Until then I am a Proud Cowboy

Facundo’s opponenet was #18 in Willie’s final 2024 rankings. Facundo’s first match for the program was solid even if it was against a backup.

Last year he scored 14 points (2 tds) + fall in five matches.
Besides a TF over a D2 guy, most points scored year before was 9. Year before: 11
Valencia lost last week by 5 to Evans from Utah Valley (PSU transfer). Casey shouldn't be getting majoired by that guy.
Valencia got hit with a lefty head lock at the end of that match. I believe he was up 7-2 at one point or something like that. Two things can be true, Valencia is very good and Casey had an off night. It's early, I think Swid will be fine.
After 1 college match? Kinda. But I agree, so I'm crazy too.
Valencia looks to be a R12 type guy. If he's that much better than Casey, then we need another 149lber. We better hope it was just an off night,
I'll just add that that was a great start for our "Class of '26" recruits; Vega 16-1 Tech, Robideau a MD over #4 and Lockett a Dec over #4. This should lead to some good jumps in the rankings.
DT's anecdote about KD's match last year against Air Force was great. Good to see Coach open up a little in front of the microphones
I'm a big fan of Vega, but I wouldn't overreact to his win. I think Vega has all the talent in the world and a great attitude, but still needs some polish. If he's the guy at 41, I expect we see some ups and downs. I think we use his 5 dates and that's it if Tagen can come back healthy.
Casey seems like the type who's really hard on himself. He needs to forget about that match like it never happened. If he comes back next week full of swagger he'll be just fine.

Vegas guy is was a good recruit (if you want me to outline it, I don’t mind) and I’m of the class that feels there is little margin between D1 and DII as far as the talent pool in a weight. The difference to me is that the Top 50 in D1 would probably AA in most cases and that the top 20 danger each other to AA while the top 4-5 fight for the title.
So, yeah, I won’t diminish that win. He did what he was supposed to do.

You are totally wrong. My friend was a d2 head coach for the last 3 seasons so I watched a bunch of D2 and it's night and day .
But it's irrelevant to the conversation because Consiglio didn't split with a D2 guy this year anyway. I emailed WS they have the results wrong. The D2 guy is actually a 157 and he split with Desena Stanford at 157

Swiderski was disappointing, but Valencia might be a legit title contender. He’s already one of the best freestylers in the country and his folkstyle prowess looks like it’s catching up.
As for Vega, he looked awesome regardless of his opponent. If there’s anybody whose results could be diminished based on their opponent, it would be Doucet. I loved seeing the aggression, but the guy he faced was an absolute fish lol

133: I feel better about Figs than I do at least one of the guys who won. He wrested with DT's damn the torpedos attitude. If he can keep that up and improve his tank, he'll be in great shape.
141: Vega looked great. I'm looking forward to seeing him against tougher competition.
149: Yeesh. A few more outings like that and Jamison is going to come back at 49 instead of 41.
157: Hard to ask for a better outing than that. I'm drinking the Kool Aid.
165: Good not great.
174: Workmanlike tech fall if there is such a thing. He made it look easy.
184: Looked hungover from all star classic. Something to be said for gutting out a win.

ahh ... you know who he wrestled correct? I'd call this a great first match. Kind've like Hamiti against Norman at Vegas ... sometimes ya gotta wrestle smart to just get the win. If only Figs ...

Either Valencia is all that or Casey was not himself. Casey should be on the podium in March. I really like where we are and this weekend could reflect a lot.

Both imo. Most of the All Star guys who wrestled this weekend seemed off. Swiderski, Ryder, Cardenas, Garvin, McNeil, Pinto, Shawver, Ventresca, Bastida, and Byrd were all unimpressive.
