It wasn't the famous "Oklahoma Joe's" from KC, which btw has changed it's name and is now "Joe's Kansas City".
Reviews I heard and read about it, make it no surprise it's closing.

How could this be true
I thought all businesses were money making machines where the owners were just greedy hoarders and there was no risk
How could this be?

Every business is an endless money machine

I cannot tell you many times over the years with two different small business's I owned I heard the following phrase "You can just write it off" It honestly never dawns on some people it takes dollars to create that write off. I told everyone who said that they were free to build a half million dollar building and call it XYZ corp, and they could "write it off to" and not a single one ever did. Over the years I sent the gov't thousands of dollars for quarterly's (and in 30 years I was never late with a quarterly payment), and there was nothing left for me...and this is not a Republican or Democratic thing, NOT a political jab at anyone, both sides were in control at different times throughout my tenure as a self employed guy, and I cannot tell you how much I would have enjoyed some tax relief like so many are going to get now and it is one of the reasons that somebody you never thought had a shot to win, did a couple Novembers ago. People are sick of it.

BBQ has to be the hardest food to make money with. Hands down. If it isn't I'm open to hear others suggestions or nominations.
People pay through the nose for "fresh" sushi in this town. Although we are in the middle of the country, people still actually believe raw fish is good when it's flash-froze and shipped here.
I don't care for uncooked meat, but that's just me.

Most people have zero knowledge of economics and have no clue how risky, difficult and how miluch hard work it takes to be an employer

I've owned 3 businesses
2 very successful
I'm very happy just being an employee now

Ditto, took my first job ever working for somebody else about 7 months ago and my next birthday if the big five-oh..I even took a pay cut, never been happier....and the gov't is collecting less from me now, and those stupid sons-a-bitches still don't get it.

It’s illegal for any restaurant in the United States to sell sushi that hasn’t been frozen, so the extra day or two to get it to Nebraska shouldn’t affect the quality much at all...

Isnt even the incredibly high dollar blue fin tuna flash frozen after being caught and then sent to Japan?

I would agree.
Cant just throw on a rack of ribs when an order comes in. Would seem very difficult to manage this particular aspect of barbeque.

Restaurants that sell primarily high end proteins tend to have the highest food costs. Steaks and Seafood can sometimes have a food cost of over 50% in a restaurant, which is way to high. Carbs are where the good money is at. Pasta, potatoes, beans, rice, bread, pizza dough.....can run food costs below 20%. In high school I worked at Godfather's Pizza and we have a food cost below 18%. Hard to do that with a nice piece of Sea Bass or a Prime Steak unless you are charging well over $50.

"Oklahoma" in a name still won't draw business in Lincoln near the stadium.

Probably only a little better than something called "Texas Longhorn BBQ".

What the tax cuts are doing is outstanding. And not surprising.

Oklahoma Joes and Joes KC were the same "chain" at one time. OJ's expanded to KC and then they split off and renamed the KC locations. Their menus are still very similar. I had heard that there were issues with the lease in the Haymarket and that they were looking for a new location, but am not sure of that now as they took their Facebook post down.

Government is killing small business's. Permits are outrageous. One of our places doesn't serve food. But we still have to have a food inspections and pay the yearly licensing fee of around $500 because we serve.......ice.

What really irritates me is what it costs us in time, record keeping and accounting fee's to collect and pay sales tax. Employee has child support responsibilities? You think the state collects them? Not hardly. The employer has too. When the rest of the employee's have direct deposit we have to have a separate hard check written out for them and then we have to pay to have it mailed to the state. Employee has a bad bill he gets sued on? They get a court order for garnishment and we have to collect it and mail it in. Don't do it and they come back on the employer for the employee debt.

OK I'm done rambling.

Q39 is now the best BBQ in KC, but Joe's is still great. Had a jumbo brisket sandwich with fries there Monday night. Love the seasoning they put on their fries. Bought some and put it on everything. Still, Q39 is amazing.
I’m a big fan of Q39. Everything there is good, but the burnt ends are a must-have.

Gate's BBQ is definitely a certain kind, I think you can do a lot better in KC.
I have had a few meals at Gates, but I agree here. I prefer a more Smokey sauce taste. Gates is overly salted and dry most times.

I always take the 30 minute drive North of KC to Wabash BBQ in Excelsior Springs. I highly recommend it! Never had anything bad.
