OK, so the big questions are ...

With Betts and Manning apparently now on board to upgrade the WR room, is there a QB on the roster than can take advantage of those receivers? Is there an OL that can give that QB adequate time to operate? Is there a RB that can keep the opposing defense honest?

Where have you been in the last year ? All those questions have been answered, WR, QB, RB.

well the line, Martinez and Mills all looked better in November as opposed to September to me. get them to playing 4 quarters and we have a good base to build on. Lubak (sp) will make a difference, the new olb will make a difference. the special teams will be much better. I like our set up right now. no one is expecting much, good spot to be in. kind of like Buster Douglas

yep, D Mills has that RB spot on lock and averaged 5.3-5.5 yards a carry last year and that same Oline lead us to a Top 3 ranking in the BIG 10 in rushing only behind OSU and Wisconsin.

Now the QB spot, that’s another question. Martinez had a good to solid true freshman year but bombed it his sophomore year. I’m going out on a limp and saying the man will be back his junior year with a completely different focus and we will see a much better and more dangerous QB then we ever seen out of him. And if not, Luke McCaffrey will take those reins from him.

Matt Lubick with some legit WR talent will make a huge difference. The man is a proven WR developer at power 5 level and his offense’s have always produced.

I guess I was too busy paying attention to the W-L record. ;)

come on bro, that’s an easy cop out. But the man was right, the Oline and RB play definitely improved throughout the season and I think that was his point.

Honest question, so you think the QB, OL and RB positions now are ready to deliver us a championship this year? I hope you're right.

Wasn't aware that we are going from a bowl-less team to a championship level offense in one off season.

I think we'll be better sure, and I would take a championship level offensive turnaround, but its not likely.

Championship level??? Wait...hold up. First off, you didn’t say a word about winning championships in your OP and I never said a word about good enough to win championships nor did anyone else in this thread. I just think our offense has the potential to be a solid to a great offense. But the championship talk, if that’s what you meant, you should have thrown that in your OP. And I don’t mean this to sound like I’m being a dick, just making a point you didn’t nor did I say a word about championship level. Just saying our offense should be better and how much better is left to be seen.

I dont know about y'all but im pretty hyped to see Rahmir in action this year. He was a shoelace away from breaking a couple in his limited action.

Well I don't know about you, but championships are and always have been my goal for any Nebraska team and coach. Don't think we're really back until that happens. So that's why I don't feel like I have to restate it in every post. That's the way it used to be at Nebraska. If we're willing to settle for something less then IMO that's pretty telling and we're no longer the Nebraska I grew up with. But I'm OK with everyone having their own views. It's a free country.

To me, the biggest question, is going to be the defensive line.

I think we will have problems defending the run, and that will lead to long drives and time of possession bonuses for the opponents.

To have any sort of improvement in record this year, the offense has to improve magnitudes better than the defensive falloff.

I think this is possible with Luke and/or Logan back there.

If dog face is still QBing, I expect to get our **** pushed in every week.

Well yes, you should say Championship level offense if that’s what you mean. When you post a thread and this is your main point “is there a QB on the roster than can take advantage of those receivers? Is there an OL that can give that QB adequate time to operate? Is there a RB that can keep the opposing defense honest?” then yes, anyone who is reading it will just assume your just asking if we think our offense can just do it or not. None of us can read minds and not everyone will instantly assume you mean National Title levels right out of the gates.

Outside that, I’m with you, our main goal is to get back to the championship level but we have gone 6-7, 9-4, 4-8, 4-8 and 5-7...the last 5 years. Our first step is just getting and maintaining a solid offense while we rebuild our talent levels back up. You have to learn to walk before you can run.

Dline does worry me, but at least you have some decent sized dudes there and a few that have been in the program for a bit. I still continue to say, until we get a competent LB group we are going to continue to suck. We've had some good D-lines and some decent secondaries, but our LB'ers have basically sucked since the time of LD and it was because that dude was a machine. Our D-Line to me has looked worse because our LB group sucks so bad. There is all kinds of film clips where our D-Line did lots of things right only to have LBs be so bad at their jobs that we get gashed. Yes, I am still low on our LB group even though I think we have some decent talent there.

Personally, I'm still worried most about the QB position even though on paper there seems to be much talent in the room. But until I see either Martinez return to his freshman form or somebody else steps up to replace him I will be cautious.

With Betts and Manning apparently now on board to upgrade the WR room, is there a QB on the roster than can take advantage of those receivers? Yes. Martinez can throw the deep ball. With bigger WR's he will be more successful on those deep shots. My answer to question 2 also plays a big role in this question.

Is there an OL that can give that QB adequate time to operate? Yes. We return our entire OL and we have added talent and have developed guys where they may be able to move some guys around for better fit and perhaps overtake the starters. In other words we have experience, depth and added talent for this coming year. I expect to see the biggest improvement come from our line. Snaps will also be more accurate and this year the center has past experience in making line calls.

Is there a RB that can keep the opposing defense honest? Yes. Mills is an experienced back. He's not flashy but can give you 4 yards a carry to move the chains. RB is one of the positions where it's a little easier for younger players to jump in and contribute. I am sure out of Rahmir,Scott, Morrison and Belt they can find a combination to go along with Mills. My answer to question 2 also plays a big role in this question.

=============addendum===========
I have now read the other part of the thread where the questions were qualified and now I have to change my answers but I am too tired.

We sucked last year, but definitely sucked less at the end. I want to see Frost building on that and not starting over sucking again. Beyond that, I feel pretty relaxed about the whole thing and just looking forward to some normalcy in football and life.

I like our DL and I think they will be solid. We have experience and we have some bigger players that we can roll in there. The group I am worried about is the OLB's. 2nd group I worry about is ILB's. I think our DL and Db's will be solid.

The same thing was said before last season. Hopefully things will turn out differently this season.

the biggest difference then was we lost Devine Ozigbo, Stan Morgan Jr and our starting center. At the beginning of last season Mills wasn’t ready yet and M Washington eventually quit all together. Then K Noa wasn’t anything like Stan Morgan Jr and to make things worse, Cam Jurgens was horrible snapping the ball. All that really put us back and behind again.

As we all seen, we got things figured out again and we started to improve in the areas we struggled at. Now going into the 2020 season, we return everyone. So there is a difference, a BIG difference from the 2018-2019 seasons to the 2019-2020 seasons.

Prepare to be disappointed for a while Redcap. If thats what you have as a measuring stick for us to be back we are a long ways off.

This isnt the old big 8 or even the big 12. OSU isnt going anywhere and it appears Wiscy isnt either. On top of that Minnesota and Iowa appear to be ascending. The road to a championship will be much harder in the current BIG than it was in the past. Notice i didnt even mention perennial top 10-15 PSU and Michigan.

I wish i had the same goals of a championship or bust but those expectations have long left me.

O line should be much improved. I think Mills is going to be our work horse run it down your throat. The combination of him and the improved oline should make Ds respect the run much more than they did last year. This in turn should open up our passing game. My concern is at QB. I don't know if we have an accurate enough passer to be able to make Ds pay over the top consistently enough. Smothers is probably the best and most accurate however I don't see them burning his RS.

That's funny right there.

definitely a different type of response, that’s for sure.

And I’m with you on hoping our star RB D Mills has more carries then our starting QB. I’d have to guess he will. Mills was playing at a decent to high level to second half of the season.

totally appropriate response.

Ozigbo only had 14 more carries than Martinez in 2018, and Martinez had more carries than Mills in 2019, in less games played. So there is definitely room for concern.

Nice write up via Dereck Peterson from Hail Varsity and what he says about Adrain Martinez....

“How is he going to remind everyone? I’ve said it many times. I’m still firmly in Adrian Martinez’s corner. The talent that helps someone earn a Freshman All-America nod doesn’t go away overnight. Martinez needs to work on his coverage-reading and decision-making, yes, but the young man’s struggles in 2019 had as much to do with factors outside his control as those within it. He’ll be a junior. He’ll be motivated. I’m most anxious to see how he bounces back.

The touch ball: That being said, there is one pass I want to see Martinez hit: the intermediate-to-deep over-the-shoulder ball. Not slinging it and letting his guy run under it, not side-arming it, not hitting the shallow cross or the bubble. I want to see Martinez drop a ball in-between some defenders. If he can start hitting that throw at a high percentage, watch out.”

Here’s the link for his complete breakdown for the 2020 season if anyone wants to read it.

Very good post sir! Of course, a good read.

However, In my blind opinion, AMart's biggest two problems last year was hikes flying all over place. Surely that would effect the timing of any qb? The other big problem was for at least the 1st half of last year showed our OLine simply unable to run or pass block anyone. Period. This could also quite possibly be why he was injured.

I bet with our full returning OLine and several animal based young linemen pushing for time.....he's going to improve massively.

GBR!!
